A June trip turns on two questions, why this month and why this place. June's answer to the first is light. The sun never sets on Tromsø or Reykjavík, and evenings run late from Edinburgh to Palma. Scandinavia celebrates Midsummer, and the month also brings fixed-date festivals, a Mediterranean warm enough to swim in and the Okavango flood in Botswana's dry season.
For June 2027, build the trip around a date. Lisbon's marches parade on June 12, and Dublin keeps Bloomsday on June 16. Art Basel and Edinburgh's Royal Highland Show both run June 17 to 20, and Iceland's National Day is June 17. Copenhagen and Palma light Midsummer bonfires on June 23, Cusco stages Inti Raymi on June 24 and Stockholm dances on Midsummer Eve, June 25. Go to Tromsø or Reykjavík for the midnight sun. Santorini, Amalfi, Palermo and Dubrovnik have a warm sea. Banff, Jackson, Seward and Maun are the picks for parks and wildlife, and Mackinac Island, Chicago, Provincetown and San Francisco round out the US.
- Festivals: Santo António in Lisbon (June 12 and 13), Bloomsday (June 16), Art Basel and the Royal Highland Show (June 17 to 20), Inti Raymi (June 24) and Swedish Midsummer Eve (June 25).
- Midnight sun: Tromsø, from about May 20 to July 22; Reykjavík also has daylight around the clock.
- Warmest: Palma de Mallorca, highs of 28.8 °C (84 °F); warmest sea: Santorini and Amalfi, 21.7 °C (71 °F).

Midnight sun and Midsummer in the north
June brings the midnight sun to Tromsø and Reykjavík, and the cities farther south celebrate Midsummer with maypoles and bonfires.
Tromsø, Norway
Best for the midnight sun and late fjord trips
- Weather: highs 12.3 °C (54 °F), lows 7.6 °C (46 °F); 117 mm (4.6 in) of rain over about 16 wet days; sea 7.0 °C (45 °F)
- Dates: midnight sun, about May 20 to July 22
- Season: low, 0.88 times an average month in Tromsø's hotels
- Plan it: 10-day Norway itinerary, Norway guide
The sun never sets on Tromsø in June. In the tourism board's words, the sun "stays above the horizon in Tromsø, turning night into golden daylight" from late May to late July. The Arctic city's center has more old wooden houses than any other in northern Norway.
Tromsø's hotels fill in winter for the northern lights, so June is their low season. Of the 22 places here, Tromsø has the most wet days and the coldest sea. Pack a rain jacket and warm layers for the late evenings outdoors.
Book an evening fjord boat or a sea-kayak trip under the midnight sun. The Fjellheisen cable car takes four minutes to reach the Storsteinen ledge, about 420 m above the city. The Polar Museum tells the story of Arctic trapping and polar expeditions. Try finnbiff, sautéed reindeer with mashed potatoes and lingonberries, or boknafisk (half-dried cod). Wash it down with Mack beer, first brewed in Tromsø in 1877.

Reykjavík, Iceland
Best for National Day parades under the midnight sun
- Weather: highs 12.3 °C (54 °F), lows 7.5 °C (46 °F); 95 mm (3.7 in) of rain over about 13 wet days
- Dates: National Day, June 17, 2027
- Season: shoulder, 1.08 times an average month in the capital region's hotels
- Daily budget: about $311 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 10-day Reykjavík itinerary, 5-day Iceland itinerary, Iceland packing list
Reykjavík celebrates National Day under the midnight sun on June 17, the date the Republic of Iceland was founded in 1944. In 2026 a parade set off from Hallgrímskirkja, with concerts, street theater and food trucks in the center of the northernmost capital of a sovereign state.
June is quieter than July and August. Icelanders joke that it always rains on National Day, so bring a rain jacket to the parade.
Join a puffin boat trip from the Old Harbor to the nesting islands of Akurey, Lundey and Engey. On a wet day, go up Öskjuhlíð hill to Perlan, the natural history museum. Grab pylsur, the Icelandic hot dog, from a stand. Then try the cultured dairy dish skyr and rúgbrauð, a dense rye bread once baked near hot springs. For a hand-knitted lopapeysa sweater, go to the Handknitting Association of Iceland.

Stockholm, Sweden
Best for Midsummer maypoles and archipelago boat days
- Weather: highs 21.1 °C (70 °F), lows 11.3 °C (52 °F); 63 mm (2.5 in) of rain over about eight wet days
- Dates: Midsummer Eve, June 25, 2027
- Season: peak, 1.15 times an average month in Stockholm County
- Daily budget: about $217 a person, mid-range
Stockholm dances around the maypole on Midsummer Eve, June 25, 2027, one of Sweden's most important traditions. The capital is built on islands, and passenger boats on fixed routes run out into an archipelago of roughly 24,000 more.
For the maypole, Skansen is the safe bet, with a Midsummer celebration every year. Many shops close at noon on Midsummer Eve, and summer brings high hotel prices.
Spend a day on a boat in the archipelago. On Djurgården, the Vasa Museum holds a 64-gun warship that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628, and ABBA The Museum is nearby. Wander the lanes of Gamla Stan, the old town, in the long evening light. On Midsummer Eve, eat pickled herring, the holiday staple. Another day, order toast Skagen, the shrimp toast created by Stockholm chef Tore Wretman. For a painted Dala horse, go to Svensk Hemslöjd.

Copenhagen, Denmark
Best for harbor swims and Midsummer Eve bonfires
- Weather: highs 21.2 °C (70 °F), lows 12.9 °C (55 °F); 59 mm (2.3 in) of rain over about eight wet days; sea 14.5 °C (58 °F)
- Dates: Sankt Hans Aften, June 23, 2027; Roskilde Festival, June 26 to July 3
- Season: peak, 1.21 times an average month in the Capital Region
- Plan it: 4-day Copenhagen itinerary
Copenhagen lights its Sankt Hans bonfires on the evening of June 23, with speeches and songs around the fires. The Danish capital is a city of bikes and canals, with four harbor baths where you can swim in the middle of town.
In 2026 the city listed fires at Tivoli, Ofelia Plads and Frederiksberg Have. The Roskilde Festival opens three days after Sankt Hans, so one week can cover both. Summer is Copenhagen's busy season, with prices to match.
Swim at the harbor bath at Islands Brygge, the first and best known. See Tivoli Gardens, the pleasure garden, which puts on fireworks every summer Saturday. Take a canal tour from Nyhavn, and ride the city's cycle tracks for a day. Eat smørrebrød (open sandwiches on rye) and koldskål, the cold buttermilk dish of the Danish summer. At a hot dog stand, order a rød pølse.

Edinburgh, UK
Best for the Royal Highland Show and long Old Town evenings
- Weather: highs 18.2 °C (65 °F), lows 9.6 °C (49 °F); 67 mm (2.6 in) of rain over about ten wet days
- Dates: Royal Highland Show, June 17 to 20, 2027
- Season: shoulder, 1.07 times the year's average in hotel occupancy; room rates peak from May to September
- Plan it: 3-day Edinburgh itinerary, 7-day Scotland itinerary, Scotland guide
The Royal Highland Show fills Ingliston on Edinburgh's western edge from June 17 to 20, 2027. Scotland's capital pairs its medieval Old Town with the Georgian New Town, and in June the evenings stay light late.
Scotland's biggest agricultural show draws up to 190,000 visitors, so book that weekend early. Summer room rates have arrived by June, ahead of the August festival crowds.
Start at Edinburgh Castle, Scotland's second most visited attraction. Walk down the Royal Mile, about a mile from the castle to Holyrood Palace. On a long evening, climb the 250.5 m of Arthur's Seat for the view over the city. Haggis is Scotland's national dish, and cranachan is a dessert of raspberries, cream and oats. Take home a single malt from Cadenhead's on the lower Royal Mile.

Early-summer Mediterranean
June warms the Mediterranean enough for long swims, and the days end in late sunsets over the water.
Amalfi, Italy
Best for beach days and a saint's feast
- Weather: highs 25.2 °C (77 °F), lows 16.6 °C (62 °F); 30 mm (1.2 in) of rain over about three wet days; sea 21.7 °C (71 °F)
- Dates: Feast of Sant'Andrea, June 27, 2027
- Season: peak, 1.47 times an average month for Campania
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, 5-day Amalfi Coast itinerary, 7-day hiking and beach itinerary
Amalfi carries the statue of its patron Saint Andrew down to the beach to bless the sea on June 27, 2027. The bearers then run the statue up the cathedral steps. June is the coast's beach month, with sunsets as late as 9 pm. The town that gave the Amalfi Coast its name sits under steep, terraced cliffs.
Amalfi's sea is as warm as Santorini's, the warmest of the 22 places here. The coast is already busy in June, and July and August are busier still.
Set out early on the Path of the Gods, about 7.8 km of cliff path from Bomerano to Nocelle, before the heat. In Ravello, see the terraced gardens of Villa Rufolo. From Amalfi's harbor, take a boat trip along the coast. Order scialatielli ai frutti di mare, seafood with the pasta shape devised in Amalfi, and finish with limoncello made from the coast's lemons.

Palermo, Italy
Best for street food and a city beach
- Weather: highs 28.0 °C (82 °F), lows 20.7 °C (69 °F); 18 mm (0.7 in) of rain over about two wet days; sea 21.3 °C (70 °F)
- Season: peak, 1.45 times an average month for Sicily
- Daily budget: about $130 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 7-day Sicily itinerary, Sicily guide
From June the sea off Palermo averages above 21 °C (70 °F), warm enough for long days at Mondello, the city beach. Sicily's capital is the main seat of the UNESCO site Arab-Norman Palermo, a city of mosaic chapels, street markets and street food.
Palermo's big feast of Santa Rosalia falls in July. Mondello lies beyond La Favorita park, out of the center. Summer brings crowds, higher lodging prices and hot afternoons.
Keep the mosaics of the Palatine Chapel in the Palazzo dei Normanni, a royal residence of the Kingdom of Sicily, for the afternoon heat. In the morning, walk to Quattro Canti, the Baroque crossroads at the center of the old quarters. The Capuchin Catacombs are cool underground, but they are not for young children. Palermo's street food starts with pani câ meusa (a spleen sandwich) and panelle, chickpea fritters in a sesame roll. Sfincione is the city's thick pizza.

Dubrovnik, Croatia
Best for warm-sea swims before July's festival crowds
- Weather: highs 28.2 °C (83 °F), lows 20.1 °C (68 °F); 72 mm (2.8 in) of rain over about six wet days; sea 20.9 °C (70 °F)
- Season: peak, 1.78 times an average month in Dubrovnik-Neretva County
- Daily budget: about $180 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 10-day Croatia itinerary, 14-day Balkans itinerary, Croatia guide
Dubrovnik's sea averages 20.9 °C (70 °F) in June, and the Summer Festival does not open until July 10. Banje, the main public beach, sits just outside the walls of the old town, a UNESCO site since 1979.
Cruise passengers crowd the old town on hot June days, though the city staggers ship arrivals to spread them over the week. Of the Mediterranean picks, Dubrovnik has the wettest June.
Walk the full circuit of the city walls (about 1,940 m) at opening time, before the heat. Take the cable car up Mount Srđ and walk back down. From the old port, take a ferry or a sea kayak out to Lokrum. For dessert, order rožata, Dubrovnik's custard flavored with rose liqueur. Zelena menestra is the cabbage and meat stew of the area.

Santorini, Greece
Best for caldera sunsets and volcanic beaches
- Weather: highs 27.9 °C (82 °F), lows 21.0 °C (70 °F); 3 mm (0.1 in) of rain; sea 21.7 °C (71 °F)
- Season: peak, 1.95 times an average month in the South Aegean
- Daily budget: about $281 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 10-day Greek islands itinerary, 7-day Greece itinerary, Greece guide
Santorini gets almost no rain in June and has the warmest nights of the 22 places here, with lows of 21.0 °C (70 °F). The volcanic island curves around a flooded caldera, and Oia is where the island gathers for sunset.
The island draws an estimated 2 million visitors a year, and Oia fills at sunset, so arrive early for a place to watch.
Santorini's Red, Black and White beaches are lava sand and pebbles, and the water is warmer off a dark one. See Akrotiri, the Bronze Age town buried in ash, under its protective roof in the heat of the day. Take a morning boat to Nea Kameni, the bare lava island in the caldera. Spend an evening in Pyrgos, one of the villages least changed by tourism. Order fava santorinis, a split-pea purée from the island's protected legume, and tomatokeftedes (fried tomato fritters).

Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Best for a Gothic cathedral and Sant Joan fire night
- Weather: highs 28.8 °C (84 °F), lows 17.4 °C (63 °F); 17 mm (0.7 in) of rain over about two wet days; sea 21.5 °C (71 °F)
- Dates: Nit de Sant Joan, June 23, 2027
- Season: peak, 1.56 times an average month in Palma's hotels
- Plan it: Spain guide
Palma celebrates Sant Joan (Saint John's Eve) on June 23, and in 2026 the night brought a bonfire, a fire-run and a concert. Mallorca's capital is also the warmest place on this list in June. Above the harbor stands La Seu, a Gothic cathedral with a rose window nearly 14 m across.
The 2026 night was held at Parc de la Mar below the cathedral, and the 2027 program is not out yet. For the fire-run, wear long sleeves and sturdy shoes. The island is busier and pricier in summer.
Opposite the cathedral, see the Royal Palace of La Almudaina, an Arab fortress turned Gothic palace. Walk the old town, then have dinner in the Santa Catalina district. Take the vintage Sóller train over the Tramuntana mountains. Breakfast on an ensaïmada, the spiral pastry made with pork lard. Try sobrassada, the spreadable cured sausage.

Festivals to plan a June trip around
June's saints' days, solstice rites and art fair fall on fixed dates, so these four trips start with the calendar.
Cusco, Peru
Best for Inti Raymi and dry Andean winter days
- Weather: highs 19.4 °C (67 °F), lows −0.1 °C (32 °F); 16 mm (0.6 in) of rain over about two wet days
- Dates: Inti Raymi, June 24, 2027
- Season: shoulder, 1.02 times an average month in Machu Picchu entries
- Daily budget: about $64 a person, mid-range, the lowest here
- Plan it: 10-day Peru itinerary, Peru guide
Cusco stages Inti Raymi, the Inca Festival of the Sun, on June 24. The festival has been held at Sacsayhuamán every year since 1944. The old Inca capital sits at about 3,400 m, and its dry winter brings sunny June days.
The 2027 program is not out yet. In 2026 the festival staged scenes at Qorikancha, the Plaza Mayor and Sacsayhuamán. Nights are the coldest of the 22 and near freezing, so pack warm layers.
See Qorikancha, the Inca Empire's main temple, on a day other than June 24. Walk up through San Blas, the artisan quarter above the Plaza de Armas. Once you have acclimatized, take a day hike to Rainbow Mountain, 5,036 m high and a two-hour drive away. Stay on after the festival for Machu Picchu, about 80 km northwest. Chiri uchu is the cold festival plate of Inti Raymi, and cuy is roast guinea pig.

Lisbon, Portugal
Best for Santo António sardines and street marches
- Weather: highs 25.5 °C (78 °F), lows 16.1 °C (61 °F); 11 mm (0.4 in) of rain over one or two wet days
- Dates: Marchas Populares, arena shows June 4 to 6 and parade June 12, 2027; Santo António holiday, June 13
- Season: shoulder, 1.09 times an average month in the Lisbon metropolitan area
- Daily budget: about $194 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 7-day Portugal itinerary, 10-day Portugal road trip, Portugal guide
Lisbon's neighborhood marches parade down Avenida da Liberdade on the night of June 12, 2027. The parade falls on the eve of the holiday for Santo António, the city's saint. Grilled sardines are the festival's snack.
The 20 marches first perform at the MEO Arena in the first weekend of June, then take to the avenue a week later. Summer hotel rooms cost about $231 a night, against $124 off-season.
In Belém, see the Jerónimos Monastery, built in the early 1500s. Have a pastel de nata there, the custard tart first made by the monastery's monks. Walk down through Alfama, the oldest neighborhood. Give a day to the palaces of Sintra, a UNESCO site. End an evening with a glass of ginjinha, the cherry liqueur.

Dublin, Ireland
Best for Bloomsday literary pilgrims and long evenings
- Weather: highs 19.4 °C (67 °F), lows 10.4 °C (51 °F); 71 mm (2.8 in) of rain over about 11 wet days
- Dates: Bloomsday, June 16, 2027
- Season: peak, 1.23 times an average month in overseas visitors' trips to Ireland
- Daily budget: about $201 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 3-day Dublin itinerary, day trips from Dublin, Ireland guide
Dublin celebrates Bloomsday on June 16, the day in 1904 on which James Joyce set Ulysses. Fans in Edwardian dress stop at Davy Byrne's on Duke Street for Bloom's gorgonzola sandwich and a glass of burgundy.
The 2026 Bloomsday Festival ran for the six days up to June 16. The 2027 dates are not out yet, so plan around Bloomsday itself. June is one of Ireland's busiest months, and rooms in summer cost about $300 a night against $161 off-season.
See the Book of Kells, made around 800 AD, at Trinity College. Pass an evening in St Stephen's Green, beside Grafton Street. Keep a wet afternoon for the rooftop Gravity Bar at the Guinness Storehouse. Try Dublin coddle, a sausage and rasher stew, with a pint of the Guinness brewed at St James's Gate since 1759. At Sweny's, now a bookshop, buy the lemon soap Bloom buys in Ulysses.

Basel, Switzerland
Best for Art Basel and Rhine swimming
- Weather: highs 26.1 °C (79 °F), lows 13.6 °C (56 °F); 128 mm (5.0 in) of rain over about 14 wet days
- Dates: Art Basel, June 17 to 20, 2027
- Season: shoulder, 1.09 times an average month in Basel's hotels, with room occupancy tied for the year's high
- Daily budget: about $314 a person, mid-range, second only to Chicago's
- Plan it: Switzerland guide, 7-day Switzerland itinerary
Art Basel fills Messe Basel from June 17 to 20, 2027. Parallel fairs such as Liste run the same week. The Swiss city spends its summer in the Rhine, and swimming in the river is its favorite summer sport.
Book early for fair week. Basel is the wettest of the European picks, so bring rain gear, and swim only once the water is above 18 °C (64 °F).
See the Kunstmuseum Basel, built on a Holbein collection the city bought in 1661. Walk the Old Town to the red Rathaus on the Marktplatz. Cross the river on one of the four current-driven Rhine ferries. Basler Läckerli is the city's honey and spice cookie, and Mässmogge are its filled candies. For a Rhine swim, pack your clothes in a Wickelfisch swim bag from Basel Tourist Information, enter below Museum Tinguely and float about 3 km through the Old Town.

National parks and wildlife
June opens the summer in the northern parks, with lakes thawing in Banff and wildflowers in Grand Teton. In Botswana, June brings the Okavango's flood.
Banff, Canada
Best for thawing turquoise lakes and Rockies drives
- Weather: highs 18.7 °C (66 °F), lows 4.9 °C (41 °F); 124 mm (4.9 in) of rain over about 14 wet days
- Plan it: 5-day Banff itinerary
Banff's high lakes (Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Peyto Lake) usually start to thaw in early June. Canada's first national park dates from 1885 and has been part of a UNESCO site since 1984.
Moraine Lake Road is closed to private cars, so book the Parks Canada shuttle when seats open. In 2026 the shuttle ran from June 1, and seats opened for booking on April 15. Lake Louise's parking fills early, so take the shuttle there too.
Take the Banff Gondola to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, and walk the railed paths of Johnston Canyon. End the day with a soak at the Banff Upper Hot Springs, the highest hot spring in Canada. For dinner, order dry-aged Alberta beef, grilled at Chuck's Steakhouse on Banff Avenue.

Jackson, Wyoming, USA
Best for Teton wildflowers with Yellowstone next door
- Weather: highs 23.1 °C (74 °F), lows 4.8 °C (41 °F); 51 mm (2.0 in) of rain over about seven wet days
- Season: peak, 2.15 times an average month in Grand Teton visits
In June, Grand Teton National Park, around the town of Jackson, is in wildflower season, which usually runs from May to September. The park covers Jackson Hole, the valley the town sits in. Yellowstone lies 10 miles north of the park.
June is one of the park's busiest months, and July is busier still. Hotel prices are high, so book early. The valley has about 60 frost-free days a year, and June nights still drop to 4.8 °C (41 °F), so bring layers.
Ride the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram, nine minutes and 4,139 vertical feet up to Rendezvous Mountain. Float or raft the Snake River, and walk the trails or take the boat shuttle at Jenny Lake. Back in town, order elk tenderloin at The Granary, or the bison buffadilla at the Alpenhof Bistro.

Seward, Alaska, USA
Best for glaciers, whales and fjord boat trips
- Weather: highs 17.3 °C (63 °F), lows 9.0 °C (48 °F); 141 mm (5.5 in) of rain over about 11 wet days; sea 8.0 °C (46 °F)
- Season: peak, 2.91 times an average month in Kenai Fjords visits
- Plan it: Alaska cruise packing list
By June, humpback whales are back in the waters off Seward, and the boat tours from its harbor show sea lions and puffins. The small Alaska town is the base for Kenai Fjords National Park, whose Harding Icefield feeds at least 38 glaciers. The park's visitor centers are open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.
Seward is the wettest place of the 22 in June, so bring warm layers and rain gear. July is busier than June, and cruise ships bring crowds, with 87 ship calls and nearly 200,000 visitors in 2023.
Take a boat tour into the fjords, and drive to Exit Glacier, at the end of the park's only road. In town, visit the Alaska SeaLife Center, the state's public aquarium. Walk past the murals of the town named Mural Capital of Alaska in 2008. Paddle a sea kayak on Resurrection Bay. Eat fried halibut at Thorn's Showcase Lounge, or Resurrection Bay salmon.

Maun, Botswana
Best for Okavango flood-season safaris
- Weather: highs 28.1 °C (83 °F), lows 9.0 °C (48 °F); almost no rain
- Dates: Okavango flood, peaks in June and July
- Season: peak, 1.36 times an average month in arrivals at Maun Airport
The Okavango Delta's yearly flood peaks in June and July, in the middle of Botswana's dry season, and Maun is where the safaris start. Botswana's tourism capital is the base for flights into the Delta, whose eastern side is largely Moremi Game Reserve.
Maun is the driest place of the 22 in June, but dawns are cold on open game drives. Botswana is an expensive country to travel, and the Delta's camps are exclusive.
Glide through the flooded channels on a mokoro, a dugout canoe poled from the stern. Take a scenic flight over the Delta. In town, walk the banks of the Thamalakane River, where red lechwe graze beside goats and cattle. Try seswaa, pounded beef or goat, and the fat cakes called magwinya.

Where to go in June in the US
For June in the US, pick by the calendar. Mackinac Island's lilacs fill the first half of the month, and Provincetown and San Francisco hold their festivals on the last weekend. Chicago's beaches are open all month, with the warmest highs of the US picks. For parks, Jackson has Grand Teton in wildflower season and Seward has Alaska's glaciers and whales.
Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA
Best for lilacs and a car-free island by bike
- Weather: highs 20.6 °C (69 °F), lows 8.6 °C (47 °F); 73 mm (2.9 in) of rain over about eight wet days
- Dates: Lilac Festival, June 4 to 13, 2027
- Plan it: Weekend getaways from Chicago
Mackinac Island has held its Lilac Festival since 1949, and in 2027 it runs from June 4 to 13. The island sits in Lake Huron between Michigan's two peninsulas, and it has no cars. You arrive by ferry and get around on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage.
Go during the festival, and pack a layer for the ferry crossing, since June nights on the lake stay cool.
Ride M-185, the 8-mile road around the island's shore, on a rented bike. On the way, stop at Arch Rock, a limestone arch 146 feet above Lake Huron. The British built Fort Mackinac above the harbor during the American Revolutionary War. Fudge from the Main Street shops is the island's best-known souvenir.

Chicago, Illinois, USA
Best for lake beaches and river architecture
- Weather: highs 25.5 °C (78 °F), lows 13.6 °C (56 °F); 135 mm (5.3 in) of rain over about 11 wet days
- Daily budget: about $323 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: Weekend getaways from Chicago, day trips from Chicago
Chicago's beaches on Lake Michigan open on Memorial Day weekend, so June is the first full month of the city's swim season. Chicago also has the warmest June highs of the US picks here. Chicago is the pick for a city trip with a swim in it, though it has the highest daily budget of the places here with a figure.
Swim only when lifeguards are on duty, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Rain falls on about 11 days, so keep a museum or a tower in reserve.
If you do one thing, take the docent-led architecture cruise on the Chicago River, run by the Chicago Architecture Center. Cloud Gate, the steel "Bean" of 168 welded plates in Millennium Park, and the Willis Tower, the city's tallest building at 1,451 feet, both stand in the Loop.
Order a Chicago dog: an all-beef frankfurter on a poppy seed bun with mustard, chopped onions and neon relish. Chicago's other signature dish is deep-dish pizza, with a tall crust and the tomato sauce over the cheese.

Provincetown, Massachusetts, USA
Best for whale watching and the Portuguese Festival
- Weather: highs 22.7 °C (73 °F), lows 14.3 °C (58 °F); 93 mm (3.6 in) of rain over about eight wet days; sea 14.1 °C (57 °F)
- Dates: Portuguese Festival, June 25 to 27, 2027
- Season: peak, 1.51 times an average month's visits to Cape Cod National Seashore
- Plan it: Weekend getaways from Boston
Provincetown, a town of about 3,700 people at the tip of Cape Cod, swells to as many as 60,000 in summer, so book the room first. The last weekend of June brings its Portuguese Festival, June 25 to 27, which ends with the Blessing of the Fleet on the Sunday. The town grew as a fishing and whaling port, settled in part by Portuguese sailors from the Azores.
Come for the festival weekend. The sea is cold in June, at 14.1 °C (57 °F), so plan on walks over swims.
Take a whale-watching boat out to Stellwagen Bank. The Dolphin Fleet sails from April to October. Back on land, climb the Pilgrim Monument, at 252 feet the tallest all-granite structure in the US, and walk the beaches and dunes of Cape Cod National Seashore. For lunch, order a lobster roll, New England's sandwich of lobster meat on a grilled hot dog bun.

San Francisco, California, USA
Best for Pride weekend and dry days by the bay
- Weather: highs 22.0 °C (72 °F), lows 11.9 °C (53 °F); 2 mm (0.1 in) of rain; sea 12.6 °C (55 °F)
- Dates: San Francisco Pride, June 26 to 27, 2027
- Season: peak, 1.19 times an average month's visits to Golden Gate National Recreation Area
- Daily budget: about $251 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: Weekend getaways from San Francisco, day trips from San Francisco
June is almost rainless in San Francisco, the driest of the six US places on this page, and Pride holds its 57th parade and celebration on the last weekend, June 26 and 27. Summer fog is common, so carry a jacket even on a sunny morning.
Go in June rather than July or August, when the parks around the bay are busier still.
Book the Alcatraz ferry ahead, since one contracted company carries every visitor to the island. Have lunch in the food hall of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero. French bakers brought sourdough to the city in the Gold Rush, so take your chowder in a sourdough bowl; cioppino, a fish stew, was born here too. Give an afternoon to Golden Gate Park, at 1,017 acres the city's largest park.
