The honest math
Why "for now" — and what could change.
AI compute is genuinely expensive. Every itinerary costs us real money: AI inference for generation, real-venue data lookups, and verified-context retrieval for grounded local detail. The per-itinerary cost is not zero, even at our scale.
Affiliate revenue covers it today. When you book hotels or activities through our affiliate links — Klook, Booking.com, and similar — we earn a commission. The price you pay does not change. Using the links is optional; every itinerary works whether or not you book through us. Enough people do that the math works out for now.
If costs scale faster than affiliate revenue, we may add a freemium tier later. Best guess: the core flow (answer 8 questions, get a day-by-day itinerary) stays free. Paid features would be things that compound real cost or value — unlimited regenerations, faster generation, large multi-trip portfolio exports, premium integrations. We would announce any change well before it takes effect, and grandfather what we can.
What we will not do: hidden fees, surprise paywalls, locking exports behind a credit card, or making the basic itinerary generation paid. The current free tier is the baseline.

Is MonkeyEatingMango really free?
Yes — today, completely. Unlimited itinerary generation, day-by-day plans, multi-currency budget tracking, and free PDF / Excel / Google Sheets export. No signup, no paywall on any feature. The "today" caveat exists because AI compute is genuinely expensive (each itinerary costs us real money in AI inference, venue data lookups, and verified-context retrieval), so a freemium tier may come later if affiliate revenue stops covering the bills.
Why is it free if AI is expensive?
Affiliate revenue covers the AI compute today. When you book hotels or activities through our affiliate links (Klook, Booking.com), we earn a commission — that does not change the price you pay, and using the links is optional, but enough people do that it covers the per-itinerary inference cost. As long as that math works, the product stays free.
Will you ever charge?
Honestly, we do not know. We would love to keep everything free forever, but each itinerary has a real cost (AI inference + APIs). If affiliate revenue keeps covering it: stays free. If costs scale faster than affiliate revenue: we would add a freemium tier — basic generation likely still free, advanced features (e.g. higher-volume use, deeper personalization, premium integrations) likely paid. Anything we can grandfather, we will.
What would change if you went freemium?

Are there hidden fees or in-app purchases today?
No. There is no checkout flow on the site. Every feature is free, every export is free, account creation is optional and free. Affiliate links to booking platforms are the only outbound monetization, and they never affect the price you pay.
Do I need a credit card or account to use it?
No credit card and no account required to generate an itinerary or export it. If you want to save trips across devices, sign in with Google — that is also free.
Can I export my itinerary without paying?
Yes. PDF, Excel, and Google Sheets export are all free with no signup. Other AI travel planners often paywall PDF export at around $40/year — we do not. If we ever add a freemium tier, free PDF export is the last thing we would put behind a paywall.
