5 days across Nice and Cannes: 3 nights in Nice (Vieux Nice, Cours Saleya Market, Promenade des Anglais), then a short train ride to Cannes for 2 nights (La Croisette, Le Suquet, Palais des Festivals). This packed itinerary features distinct coastal experiences, one hotel per city, and minimal...

A packed beach trip, for a couple, flying from New York, with a focus on beach & cultural & food

5-day trip

3dNice2dCannes

This packed itinerary immerses you in Nice's artistic heritage, panoramic vistas, and culinary scene for three days, before transitioning to Cannes' renowned glamour and island escapes. It effectively balances two major French Riviera hubs. However, the opulence of Monaco, with its iconic casino and royal palace, is bypassed.

You also miss the charming ramparts and Picasso Museum of Antibes, alongside the medieval artisan village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence. To enrich this Riviera journey, consider adding an extra day to visit Eze, a spectacular medieval village perched high above the sea. Wander its cobblestone streets, explore the exotic garden atop the ruins, and savor breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline.

This itinerary follows a packed pace (5-6 activities per day). Day 1 and the last day are lighter to account for arrival and departure. Want a different pace?

"A wonderful spot to see Nice's port from above. Located on the east side of Castle Hill Park, this offers incredible views of the port, the sea, Parc du Mont Boron, and the surrounding cityscape. There is a snack stand, a little convenience store, and toilets close by. The park also features a large meadow and playground just steps away. Walk across the meadow to find Point de vue Colline du Château, which looks over the west side. You can get here by either walking up the hill from the port, or taking an elevator on the Old Town side. I got some of my favorite pics of the city at this spot, so I highly recommend."Mike M.

The location is super convenient, and the water is incredibly clean and clear, which makes it perfect for swimming and cooling off. It’s a pebble beach rather than a sandy one, so walking can be a bit uncomfortable at times, especially barefoot. That said, it’s a great spot to spend time in the water and enjoy the seaside vibe right in the city."Sunil Khatri

What an incredible way to say goodbye to Nice. From start to finish it was pure joy, we laughed so much, spent ages swimming in the sea, start watching the sunset from the water was incredible! The wine was amazing, the pizza delicious, and the whole evening felt like a dream. On top of that, I even made new friends along the way — the kind of memories that make traveling so special. Leo and Jean-Baptiste made the experience unforgettable! fun, relaxed, and full of good energy. Truly the best way to enjoy the sunset in Nice. Thanks again for an amazing experience 🫶"Sofia Hansen

The museum has several rooms showcasing Marc Chagall’s works, and they are very well presented. Before entering, the staff checks visitors’ bags, which is understandable and well organized. We were also greeted by a cat at the entrance, who seems to live there and added a charming, unexpected touch to the visit. The only thing to keep in mind is that the walk to the museum can feel a bit unusual if you’re coming from the train station, and there are quite a lot of stairs along the way. What Travelers Say

If you go to Rome or the main Italian cities, pay close attention to these things: - Never accept bracelets or necklaces from those who tell you that they are gifts, they are never gifts and will probably ask you for money back. Sometimes they throw you the bracelet so that you instinctively take it and then, as above, they try to convince you to take something out to send them away. The only advice in these cases is to completely ignore these people and not stop to talk to them at all, even at...

Hi all, I live in Jaipur and often see solo travelers either rush the city or get overwhelmed by the crowds, so I wanted to share a few practical tips that might help. The big sights like Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal are absolutely worth visiting, but timing makes a huge difference. Try reaching Amber right when it opens to avoid tour bus crowds. Hawa Mahal is best viewed early morning from the street before traffic builds up. If you’re looking for quieter experiences, consider walking around Jal...

My partner and I just returned from 14 days in Tuscany with most of our time in Florence and a few day trips out to smaller towns. Overall it was incredible but there were definitely some things I wish I’d known before going. Florence was beautiful but insanely crowded even in early January. Uffizi and Accademia both require advance tickets which I knew but I didn’t realize how far in advance. We had to book three weeks out just to get decent time slots. If you’re going during any kind of peak...

Expect crowds at Trevi, Vatican, Pantheon, etc. Seek refuge in Villa Borghese, avoid restaurants that have Chicken Parm or Spaghetti and Meatballs. Go to Da Remo in Testaccio neighborhood. This route focuses on Nice and Cannes over including Monaco and Antibes. Nice offers a rich Provencal culture, with its colorful Vieux Nice and unique Nicoise cuisine, distinct from other coastal towns. Cannes provides an unparalleled glimpse into Riviera glamour, from the iconic Palais des Festivals to exclusive beach clubs, a character that Antibes' smaller old town or Monaco's strictly luxury focus cannot fully replicate in a short visit.

Across Nice, Cannes, Antibes, and Monaco, expect a delightful blend of French and Italian influences, showcasing fresh Mediterranean flavors. From Nice's Salade Nicoise and Pan Bagnat at the Cours Saleya market to Monaco's high-end dining and humble Barbagiuan, the region emphasizes fresh seafood, olives, and produce. Explore Cannes' old town bistros and Antibes' Vieux Antibes for Provencal simplicity, seeking out local market stalls and family-run eateries for authentic tastes like socca and Petits Farcis.

Monaco

CustomsMonaco applies French customs regulations. Standard limits for alcohol (e.g., 1L spirits, 4L wine) and tobacco apply for non-EU travelers. Certain food items (meat, dairy) may have restrictions; check destination country rules. High-value art or antiques may require export permits.
Tax refundNon-EU residents can claim a VAT refund on purchases exceeding 100 EUR. Request a "detaxe" form at participating stores, validate it at customs (often at Nice Cote d'Azur Airport), and then submit for refund.
PaymentCredit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) are widely accepted in all shops, restaurants, and hotels. Cash is useful for smaller transactions at local markets or cafes, but not strictly necessary for most purchases.
BargainingNot practiced in Monaco. Prices are fixed and displayed in all retail establishments, including luxury boutiques and markets. Expect to pay the marked price without negotiation.

France

CustomsTravelers from outside the EU must declare goods over a certain value. For alcohol and tobacco, specific limits apply per adult. Food items, especially fresh produce or meat, may have restrictions; processed or packaged goods are generally fine. Cultural goods (antiques) may require export authorization.
Tax refundNon-EU residents can claim a VAT refund (detaxe) on purchases over a minimum spend, typically 100 EUR from a single store on the same day. Request a detaxe form (bordereau de vente a l'exportation) at the point of purchase and validate it at a PABLO terminal or customs office at your departure airport.
PaymentMajor credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, and larger stores. However, cash is preferred and sometimes necessary at smaller market stalls, independent artisans, and for purchases under 10-20 EUR.
BargainingBargaining is generally not practiced in France; prices are displayed and expected to be paid as marked in most retail stores and boutiques. Exceptions may occur at flea markets or antique fairs, where polite negotiation might be possible, but it is not a common practice.

Visa & Entry Requirements

France and Monaco are part of the Schengen Area. US, UK, EU, Australian, and Canadian citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Indian citizens typically require a Schengen visa. All nationalities must have a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended departure date. Other nationalities should check the official French consulate website for their specific requirements.

Local Customs & Etiquette

In France and Monaco, a polite greeting like 'Bonjour' (Good day) or 'Bonsoir' (Good evening) upon entering a shop or restaurant, and 'Merci' (Thank you) when leaving, is expected. Service in restaurants is generally more hands-off; do not expect staff to frequently check on you; wave politely for attention. While Monaco has its distinct national identity, many daily customs align with French norms. Tipping is not mandatory; a service charge is often included, but a small additional tip (rounding up or 5-10% for excellent service) is appreciated.

Safety Overview

Monaco stands out as one of the safest places globally, with extensive video surveillance and a high police presence, making street crime almost non-existent. In contrast, Nice and its immediate suburbs, along with crowded tourist areas in Cannes and Antibes, have a higher rate of petty crime, particularly pickpocketing. Be extra vigilant on crowded public transport, near train stations, and at the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Always keep drinks in sight at bars to prevent drink spiking, and politely decline offers from strangers.

Pro Tip

French SIM cards generally incur significant roaming charges in Monaco as Monaco Telecom is not part of the EU roaming regulations. For France and Monaco, which are part of the Schengen Area, citizens from the US, UK, EU, Australia, and Canada can generally visit visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Citizens from India will typically require a Schengen visa. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. Always verify current requirements with your country's embassy or consulate before travel.

Monaco is exceptionally safe, with minimal street crime due to high security. Nice, Cannes, and Antibes, while generally safe, experience pickpocketing and petty theft, especially in crowded tourist areas like the Promenade des Anglais or train stations. Stay alert to your belongings, avoid flashing valuables, and be cautious about drink spiking in bars. Rural areas outside the main cities are very safe.

Both France and Monaco use the Euro (EUR). It is advisable to carry some small denominations of Euro for markets, small cafes, and public transport tickets, although credit cards are widely accepted in most establishments.

Tipping is not mandatory in France or Monaco. A service charge is usually included in the price of food and services. If you receive exceptional service, you may choose to round up the bill or leave a small amount (5-10%), but it is entirely at your discretion and not expected by staff.

France and Monaco primarily use Type E (two round pins with a hole for the socket's earthing pin) and Type F (two round pins with two earthing clips on the side) power outlets. The standard voltage is 230V, and the frequency is 50Hz. Travelers from countries with different plug types (like the US, UK, or Australia) will need a suitable adapter.

From Nice Cote d'Azur Airport (NCE), you can take Tram Line 2 directly to various points in central Nice, including Jean Medecin and Port Lympia, for 1.50 EUR. For Cannes, Antibes, or Monaco, take Tram Line 2 to the Nice-Ville train station, then board a regional TER train. Taxis are also available but are significantly more expensive.

The most efficient way to travel between these towns is by regional TER train, which offers frequent and scenic coastal routes. A single journey from Nice to Cannes costs around 7-10 EUR and takes about 30-40 minutes. Local buses are cheaper (1.50-2.50 EUR per ride) but can be slower due to traffic, especially along the coastal roads.

Always greet staff with 'Bonjour' or 'Bonsoir' when entering shops or restaurants, and say 'Merci' when leaving. Avoid speaking loudly in public spaces or on public transport. Dress codes tend to be smart casual; wearing overly casual attire (like swimwear) outside beach areas is generally frowned upon. Smoking is common outdoors, but prohibited in most indoor public places.
