5-day France trip — Nice to Cannes. Day-by-day route, attractions & food.
Part one
Is this trip for you?
The French Riviera offers a distinct blend of Mediterranean glamour and rich history, unlike a trip focused solely on inland Provence. While Provence provides Roman ruins and rolling vineyards, this journey focuses on sun-drenched coastlines, Belle Epoque architecture and the deep blue of the Cote d'Azur. This destination is built for travelers seeking coastal beauty, art and a touch of Riviera opulence over rustic charm.

📅 Best Time to Visit
The French Riviera and Monaco are best visited in late spring (April-June) or early autumn (September-October). During these periods, temperatures average a pleasant 18-25 degrees Celsius, ideal for exploring, and crowds are manageable. Summer (July-August) is hot, often exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, and sees massive crowds and higher prices due to peak tourist season. Winter (November-March) is mild, around 10-15 degrees Celsius, but some attractions may have reduced hours.
Part two
The plan, day by day
5-day trip
This itinerary puts Nice at the front, allocating three full nights to explore its diverse offerings—from Old Town alleys and museums to panoramic views. Nice acts as a central hub, allowing time to unpack and settle before covering its key areas. The plan then shifts west to Cannes for the final two nights.
This order minimizes travel, grouping coastal cities by proximity. The Cannes segment includes an island escape, offering a natural winding down before departure. This structure balances cultural immersion with the relaxed pace of island exploration.
This trip immerses you in the coastal allure of the French Riviera, prioritizing the Belle Epoque elegance of Nice, the film festival glamour of Cannes and the opulence of Monaco, along with Antibes' fortified old town. However, the pace means no deep dive into the perched medieval villages like Eze, with its exotic garden perched on a cliff. You also skip the perfume capital of Grasse and the quiet, painterly village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
This trip is the right cut for those who crave seaside sophistication and city life; it is the wrong one for travelers wanting secluded mountain villages and quiet art retreats. To extend this trip, add two nights to explore Saint-Tropez. You can catch a ferry from Cannes to experience its port, chic boutiques and legendary Pampelonne Beach, adding a further dose of Riviera high life to your itinerary.

Visa & Entry Requirements
France and Monaco are part of the Schengen Area. US, UK, EU, Australian, and Canadian citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Indian citizens typically require a Schengen visa. All nationalities must have a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended departure date. Other nationalities should check the official French consulate website for their specific requirements.

Free WiFi is common and reliable in hotels, cafes, restaurants, and many public squares across Nice, Cannes, Antibes, and Monaco. Libraries and large shopping centers like Nice Etoile also offer free access. Monaco Telecom operates public WiFi hotspots in Monaco. Cafe WiFi usually requires a purchase; ask for the network name and password ('code WiFi').
Useful Apps
French SIM cards generally incur significant roaming charges in Monaco as Monaco Telecom is not part of the EU roaming regulations. If you plan extensive time in Monaco, consider a Monaco Telecom SIM. Otherwise, rely on hotel WiFi or a global eSIM that specifically covers Monaco, or enable data roaming carefully for short visits.

For France and Monaco, which are part of the Schengen Area, citizens from the US, UK, EU, Australia, and Canada can generally visit visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Citizens from India will typically require a Schengen visa. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. Always verify current requirements with your country's embassy or consulate before travel.
Monaco is exceptionally safe, with minimal street crime due to high security. Nice, Cannes, and Antibes, while generally safe, experience pickpocketing and petty theft, especially in crowded tourist areas like the Promenade des Anglais or train stations. Stay alert to your belongings, avoid flashing valuables, and be cautious about drink spiking in bars. Rural areas outside the main cities are very safe.
Both France and Monaco use the Euro (EUR). It is advisable to carry some small denominations of Euro for markets, small cafes, and public transport tickets, although credit cards are widely accepted in most establishments.
Tipping is not mandatory in France or Monaco. A service charge is usually included in the price of food and services. If you receive exceptional service, you may choose to round up the bill or leave a small amount (5-10%), but it is entirely at your discretion and not expected by staff.
France and Monaco primarily use Type E (two round pins with a hole for the socket's earthing pin) and Type F (two round pins with two earthing clips on the side) power outlets. The standard voltage is 230V, and the frequency is 50Hz. Travelers from countries with different plug types (like the US, UK, or Australia) will need a suitable adapter.
From Nice Cote d'Azur Airport (NCE), you can take Tram Line 2 directly to various points in central Nice, including Jean Medecin and Port Lympia, for 1.50 EUR. For Cannes, Antibes, or Monaco, take Tram Line 2 to the Nice-Ville train station, then board a regional TER train. Taxis are also available but are significantly more expensive.
The most efficient way to travel between these towns is by regional TER train, which offers frequent and scenic coastal routes. A single journey from Nice to Cannes costs around 7-10 EUR and takes about 30-40 minutes. Local buses are cheaper (1.50-2.50 EUR per ride) but can be slower due to traffic, especially along the coastal roads.
Always greet staff with 'Bonjour' or 'Bonsoir' when entering shops or restaurants, and say 'Merci' when leaving. Avoid speaking loudly in public spaces or on public transport. Dress codes tend to be smart casual; wearing overly casual attire (like swimwear) outside beach areas is generally frowned upon. Smoking is common outdoors, but prohibited in most indoor public places.
