10-day Thailand trip — Bangkok to Chiang Mai to Krabi. Day-by-day route, attractions & food.

Part one

Is this trip for you?

This journey combines Bangkok's intense urban energy and ancient temples with Chiang Mai's distinct Lanna culture and Krabi's limestone karst coastlines. A route focused only on Bangkok and southern islands, for example, would miss the specific northern Thai traditions, mountainous scenery and unique culinary experiences found in Chiang Mai. This itinerary is built for travelers who want to experience Thailand's diverse cultural spectrum, varied landscapes and distinct regional characters beyond just beaches.

📅 Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Thailand is during the cool and dry season, from November to February, with temperatures averaging 20-30°C. This period offers pleasant weather for sightseeing and beach activities, but it's also peak tourist season, meaning higher prices and larger crowds. The hot season (March-May) sees temperatures soaring above 35°C, while the rainy season (June-October) brings daily monsoon downpours, especially in September and October, though these are often short bursts and travel remains feasible with fewer crowds and lower prices.

Part two

The plan, day by day

10-day trip

4dBangkok3dChiang Mai3dKrabi

The trip opens with four full days in Bangkok to absorb its dense urban culture, tackling temples and markets while fresh. Transferring to Chiang Mai mid-trip allows for a reset day on Day 5, dedicating three nights to northern Thai heritage and ethical wildlife encounters. The final transition to Krabi takes place on Day 8, setting up two relaxed coastal days to wind down before departure.

This structure ensures a progressive journey from city life to cultural immersion, then to a calm beach finish, with transit days strategically placed to balance activity and rest. This itinerary prioritizes the core cultural experiences of Bangkok, the unique Lanna traditions of Chiang Mai, and the striking coastal beauty of Krabi. It covers three distinct regions, offering a comprehensive overview of the country.

However, you will not have time to explore the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its historic temples and Buddha statues. Similarly, there is no deep dive into the remote, unspoiled beaches of Koh Lanta, offering a different pace than Krabi's popular Ao Nang. This trip is right for travelers who want a broad survey of Thailand's highlights, but not for those seeking an exhaustive historical immersion or secluded island escapes.

To extend this trip, add two days for an overnight train journey to Sukhotai, exploring its impressive historical park with ancient temple ruins and serene Buddha images. This adds another layer of Thailand's rich history, offering a peaceful contrast to the cities and beaches. Alternatively, devote an extra day to Krabi for a sea kayaking trip through the mangrove forests and hidden lagoons around Ao Thalane.

TippingTipping is not traditional in Thailand. Service charges are sometimes added to restaurant bills. For street food or small eateries, rounding up a few baht is appreciated but not expected. No need to tip taxi drivers unless they go above and beyond.
WaterTap water is generally not safe for drinking. Always drink bottled water. Ice cubes are usually safe as they are commercially produced by ice companies.
VegetarianVegetarians and vegans should specify 'gin jay' (eating vegetarian) or 'mai sai neua' (no meat) and 'mai sai nam pla' (no fish sauce). While often accommodating, cross-contamination is common in street stalls. Fresh fruits and ice cubes are generally safe from reputable vendors and ice companies.
PaymentCash is king for street food stalls, small markets, and local eateries. Credit cards are widely accepted at larger restaurants, hotels, and shopping malls.
EtiquetteA 'wai' (bow with palms pressed together) is the common greeting and sign of respect; return it, but generally, wait for an elder or higher-status person to initiate. 💡
Practical

Thailand is moderately priced for tourists, though prices have increased; expect $40-70/night for decent mid-range hotels and $5-10 for sit-down meals for two. Always drink bottled water and choose busy street food stalls with visible turnover for hygiene.

💸
Saving

Maximize your $35/day food budget by embracing street food and local markets, where delicious meals cost $2-5 per person. For a more upscale experience, look for 'menu del día' style lunches in tourist areas for around $8-12 per person.

💡
Practical

In Bangkok, utilize the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway; single rides range from 16-59 THB. For navigation and ride-hailing (like Grab), purchase a local unlimited data SIM card from AIS, True, or Dtac upon arrival for around 300-500 THB for 10 days, as it's often more cost-effective than eSIMs.

💸
Saving

In Krabi, save on island tours by booking directly from local vendors at Ao Nang beach instead of through hotels, often securing a longtail boat tour for 500-800 THB per person. Many stunning beaches and viewpoints are free to explore.

Splurge

Dedicate a portion of your activity budget to a traditional Thai massage. A high-quality 60-minute session at a reputable spa will cost 300-600 THB ($8-16 USD) and offers an authentic, rejuvenating cultural experience.

Common Modes
BTS SkytrainMRTTuk-tukSongthaewBus
Ride-Hailing Apps
GrabBolt
Transit Card

Rabbit Card (BTS) / MRT Card

Pro Tip

Use Grab for fair-priced rides. Always agree on tuk-tuk fare before getting in.

  • Always wear a helmet and drive defensively when renting a scooter, especially on narrow, mountainous roads in Phuket or Ko Samui, and avoid night travel due to high accident rates.
  • Ignore unsolicited approaches from strangers offering 'special deals' or tours; these are often scams designed to overcharge or lead you to undesirable places.
  • For short distances in cities like Bangkok, use the Grab app for ride-hailing to get metered and safer fares, avoiding unmetered taxis waiting outside hotels.
  • When taking a tuk-tuk, always negotiate and agree on the fare BEFORE getting in, as 'same-same price' often means 'foreigner price'.
  • Dress respectfully when visiting temples like the Grand Palace: ensure shoulders and knees are covered; the rental booth outside charges significantly more than street vendors.
  • Carry at least ฿5,000 cash for street food, local markets, and smaller shops, as many vendors operate on a cash-only basis.
  • Pre-book popular long-distance transport, especially overnight trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, via websites like 12Go Asia at least 60 days in advance for best availability and fares.
  • Protect yourself from the sun and heat stroke by drinking plenty of water, seeking shade during peak hours (10am-4pm), and wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
  • 1
DEET 30%+ mosquito repellent (dengue common year-round)
  • 2
Lightweight long pants + shoulder-covering shirts (temple dress code)
  • 3
Rain jacket (Apr-Oct: short daily monsoon bursts, not all-day rain)
  • 4
Reef-safe sunscreen (mandatory at Similan, Phi Phi marine parks)
  • 5
Motion-sickness meds (long-tail boats, winding roads to Pai/Chiang Rai)
  • 6
    ฿5,000 baht cash (street food, tuk-tuks, songthaews — cash-only)
  • 7
Quick-dry swimwear (2 pairs for daily beach/pool rotation)
  • 8
Sarong (temples + beach + impromptu shade)
  • 9
Small flashlight or phone torch (unlit beaches, power cuts on islands)
  • 10
Loose cotton sleepwear (AC often aggressive at mid-range hotels)
  • 11
Slip-on shoes (easy removal at temples and some homes)
  • 12
Small dry bag (protect electronics on boat trips)

Note: Travel conditions, regulations, and local customs may change. We recommend verifying essential details — such as visa requirements, emergency contacts, and payment options — closer to your travel date.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most major nationalities, including US, UK, EU, Australia, and Canada, are granted visa-exempt entry for up to 30 days when arriving by air, or 15 days if arriving overland. Passports generally need to be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. Indian citizens typically require an e-Visa or visa on arrival, which should be checked on the official Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (www.thaievisa.go.th) for current requirements. Other nationalities should check the Royal Thai Embassy website for their specific country.

SIM & Connectivity

SIM Options

AIS 1-2-Call (physical SIM)
50 baht for SIM card + data package (e.g., 8-day unlimited data for 300-500 baht)

📍 Any 7-Eleven store; free at Phuket International Airport arrivals hall

TrueMove H (physical SIM)
50 baht for SIM card + data package (e.g., 8-day unlimited data for 300-500 baht)

📍 Any 7-Eleven store or carrier-branded kiosks at major airports like Suvarnabhumi or Phuket

dtac (physical SIM)
50 baht for SIM card + data package (e.g., 8-day unlimited data for 300-500 baht)

📍 Any 7-Eleven store or carrier-branded kiosks at major airports

Airalo eSIM
Varies by plan (e.g., $10 for 7 days / 1GB)

📍 Online via Airalo app or website before arrival

WiFi Availability

Free WiFi is widely available in hotels, guesthouses, and many cafes, though quality varies. Internet cafes are plentiful in tourist areas, offering connections for around 30 baht per hour. Major mobile operators provide good GSM network coverage across islands and rural areas.

Useful Apps

GrabEssential for ride-hailing, food delivery, and package delivery in major cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai.Google MapsReliable for navigation for walking, driving, and public transport directions across the country.LINEPrimary messaging app for Thais; useful for communicating with hotels, tour operators, and new local contacts.Google TranslateHelpful for real-time translation of menus and signs, especially with the camera function, and for basic conversations.
Pro Tip

While eSIMs like Airalo offer convenience, their data plans are often low (e.g., 1-3GB for a week) and can be significantly more expensive per GB than local physical SIMs purchased on arrival. For heavy data users, a local physical SIM from AIS, TrueMove H, or dtac with an unlimited data package is generally the most cost-effective option.

Most major nationalities, including US, UK, EU, Australia, and Canada, typically receive a 30-day visa exemption upon arrival by air, or 15 days overland. Indian citizens often require an e-Visa or visa on arrival. Always check the official Royal Thai Embassy website for your specific nationality's current requirements before traveling.

Thailand is generally safe, with low rates of violent crime, especially in major cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai. However, general vigilance is always advised, particularly at night. It is specifically recommended that solo female travelers avoid Pattaya at night. Scams involving unsolicited approaches are common; ignoring these is the best defense.

The currency of Thailand is the Thai Baht (THB). While credit cards are accepted at larger hotels, restaurants, and shops, cash is essential for street food vendors, local markets, smaller guesthouses, and tuk-tuks. Always carry a good amount of small denomination baht for daily expenses.

Tipping is not generally expected or mandatory in Thailand. However, leaving a small tip (e.g., 5-10% in restaurants for good service, or rounding up a taxi fare) is appreciated as a gesture of gratitude. It's not common to tip at street food stalls or small local eateries.

The ideal time to visit Thailand is during the cool and dry season from November to February, when temperatures average 20-30°C and humidity is lower. This period offers excellent weather for all activities but is also the busiest and most expensive. March to May is the hot season, and June to October is the rainy season, both offering fewer crowds and often lower prices.

The most efficient way is the Airport Rail Link (ARL) Express or City Line train, which connects directly to Phaya Thai station (City Line, ~30 mins, 45 baht) or Makkasan station (Express Line, ~15 mins, 90 baht), from where you can transfer to the BTS Skytrain or MRT Metro. Taxis are also available, metered, but can be slower due to traffic.

The most common and cost-effective option is to purchase a local physical SIM card from providers like AIS, TrueMove H, or dtac at 7-Eleven stores or airport kiosks. These often include affordable unlimited data packages. eSIMs are also available from providers like Airalo, but tend to offer less data for a higher price.

Yes, a strict dress code applies to all temples and religious sites in Thailand. Visitors must have their shoulders and knees covered. This typically means long pants or skirts for both men and women, and shirts that cover the shoulders (no tank tops or strapless tops). Shoes must always be removed before entering a temple's main prayer hall.
