10 Days in Auckland, Rotorua, Queenstown, and Franz Josef, New Zealand
This 10-day journey explores New Zealand's North and South Islands: starting in Auckland for city highlights like the Sky Tower and a wildlife visit to Tiritiri Matangi Island. Continue to Rotorua for its Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland before flying to Queenstown, the adventure capital, for...
A adventure trip, for a couple, flying from New York, with a focus on adventure & nature & wildlife
10-day trip
This trip prioritizes New Zealand's dual appeal: the North Island's geothermal wonders and Māori heritage, paired with the South Island's unparalleled alpine adventure and glacier landscapes. To fit four major destinations into 10 days, you entirely skip the serene beauty of Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound's fiords, missing cascading waterfalls, towering cliffs, and abundant marine wildlife like dolphins and seals. There's also no time for the charming, laid-back atmosphere and lake views of Wānaka, which offers a quieter alternative to Queenstown's bustle.
Add 2-3 days to include a Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound overnight cruise from Queenstown – imagine waking up surrounded by mist-shrouded peaks, kayaking through glassy waters, and spotting penguins and fur seals in their natural, untouched habitat. This would allow a deeper immersion into Fiordland's dramatic, primeval landscape, which is truly unique to New Zealand's southwest. Also consider swapping one day in Auckland for an overnight to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves for a truly unique underground adventure, exploring ancient limestone formations illuminated by thousands of tiny bioluminescent creatures, a unique natural marvel not easily found elsewhere in the world.

4.7(14,045 reviews)"Visiting Auckland Museum for the first time was an absolute blast. We didn't have time for the special Sharks exhibition or the haka performance, but we did make it through all of their regular exhibits. I was surprised at the variety of displays for a "War Memorial Museum." There certainly is a war memorial element, but this is so much more than a war museum. It combines New Zealand's Māori and colonial history, world history, natural history, natural disasters, social commentary, and more. There are a lot of Māori artifacts and social commentary/discussions, which I love. There have a small but mighty display of global antiquities including pottery from ancient Greece, Mayan sculptures, and even an Egyptian mummy. There are multiple hands-on children's sections throughout as well, including a mildly terrifying mock house where you watch a volcano erupt outside the window and destroy everything in its path. The natural history section was my favorite. They have two dinosaurs, a pterosaur, and mosasaurus replicas displayed, along with ichthyosaurus, and plesiosaurus skull replicas. There was a decent number of authentic prehistoric fossils as well. The staff was super friendly and the gift shop was top notch. Next time, I hope to check out their special exhibitions and haka performance."— Harrison

The lobsters are creepy and awesome at the same time. And the octopus are one of a kind. The talk at the tank was informative and a great presentation. The antarctic penguins were so fun to watch. It’s one of those places that really delivers on the “wow” factor — the colours, the steam, and the unique landscapes are unreal and totally different to anything they’d seen before. A couple of practical tips that made the visit even better: wear good shoes, especially if it’s been wet beforehand, as some paths can be a bit slippery. Definitely take water, as you’ll be walking around for a while, and don’t forget sunscreen — even on cooler days you’re out in the open a lot. We had a talk about kiwis and their status as endangered animals. We then got to see two adult kiwis in the nocturnal house, followed by some kiwi eggs in the incubation room. The final step of the tour was to see the kiwi nursery where we were lucky enough to watch a baby kiwi receiving its daily health check. Our tour guide Carole was absolutely fantastic. She really made the tour with her friendly attitude, extensive knowledge and her blatant passion for everything she was talking about. She guided and controlled the group well and ensured that everything ran smoothly. Carole- you’re the best guide we’ve had in Aotearoa. Thanks so much for an amazing tour!"— Megan Thomas

4.6(13,663 reviews)"We arrived at 11:00 p.m., and the experience was beautiful. Although it was quite dark, the lighting along the walkways was bright and well done, creating a striking atmosphere. It is important to note that once you begin the walk, there is no turning back, and the bridges move as you walk across them. As someone who is afraid of heights, I found it manageable, especially since the darkness limited visibility below. If you complete the walk quickly and still have time remaining, you are allowed to go through it again. Adjacent to the treetop walk is a glow worm cave, which was also very interesting. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating; despite it being after 11:00 p.m. and close to closing time, they kindly agreed to show us the glow worm cave. Parking is limited, so arriving a few minutes early is recommended. The restrooms, however, were not very clean."— Serli

4.6(13,455 reviews)"Our family has been huge fans of the Luge ever since it opened in our hometown, Singapore. Visiting the Luge here was one of our must-do activities in Queenstown, and it definitely did not disappoint. We even spent our Lunar New Year here! I’m quite scared of heights, but the gondola ride was incredibly smooth and steady, which made the journey up very comfortable. The views of Queenstown were absolutely magnificent, and we even spotted a few sheep on the mountains along the way. Once we reached the top, the cool temperature and the stunning scenery made the whole trip even more worthwhile. Of course, the highlight was the luge rides—we went for 6 rounds because honestly, one is never enough! The entire experience was so much fun and truly memorable for our family. Interestingly, the waiting time here felt shorter compared to Singapore because the procedures are a bit different. From the second round onwards, we could take our own luge carts, which helped reduce the waiting time. As loyal supporters of the Luge, we’ll definitely be visiting it in other countries too. Highly recommended for families visiting Queenstown!"— Ruth Tay

What Travelers Say
“Auckland is a safe place to visit, thanks to a quality of life that ranks alongside cities like Munich or Melbourne. That said, thefts and robberies are more prevalent than in the rest of New Zealand, and aggravated assaults are not unheard of. Make sure to take all the usual safety precautions. Asking locals can give you an idea of where not to go. The area locals will most definitely warn you about is South Auckland, which is widely regarded as one of New Zealand's most dangerous locations due to its significant poverty and unemployment rates. While it is nowhere nearly as dangerous as "rough" areas in the USA or Europe, it is advised to remain on one's guard at night. People might also advise against going to certain parts of West Auckland, a former working-class area seen as "rough around the edges" that has thankfully improved markedly over the years, but still suffers from occasional burglaries and thefts. As in the rest of the country, alcohol culture is very prevalent in Auckland, and it is not abnormal to see drunkards of all ages and from all walks of life meander around. Drugs are also becoming a major issue in Auckland, with junkies becoming an unfortunately common sight along Karangahape Road (commonly known as K' Road) and parts of Queen Street at night. Simply avoiding eye-contact will be enough to avoid trouble.”

“Lockers are available in the terminal for $15 per day. There are good children's bathrooms, with locked doors, curtained areas for baby feeding and even some small play areas. Free showers are available for arriving international passengers, turn left when you come out of customs – bring your own towel and toiletries. There are also (slightly nicer) free showers in both the international and domestic departures areas. There is a small prayer room in the international departures area.”

“Queenstown is a relatively safe town. The most common offence committed against tourists in the Queenstown area are car break-ins. Although limited in number, the police in the Queenstown area are intolerant of disorderly behaviour and are prepared to arrest for quite minor offences. As with anywhere in New Zealand, they have no tolerance for possession of drugs. Other emergency services in the area operate on a volunteer basis. Occasionally you may hear what sounds like a World War II air raid siren go off in Queenstown. This is not signalling that someone is trying to attack New Zealand with nuclear weapons, but signalling volunteer fire-fighters to get down to the station because there's a house fire/car accident/kitten stuck up a tree. Rental car companies have restrictions in their rental agreements to prevent their vehicles being operated on some high country roads. New Zealand's ski-field roads also take many visitors by surprise, but driving to suit the conditions will considerably reduce any risk. * *”

“The region always gets snow in winter. Some of the roads, especially the alpine passes, become icy in winter and road closures (especially of the Crown Range between Queenstown and Wanaka) commonly occur. In winter, chains should be used where necessary (especially on the ski field access roads). Many of the main roads can be very winding and narrow, with many blind corners. Care should be taken when driving in the region.”

“The changeable weather and imprecise forecasting are key dangers. Great care must be taken, especially when tramping in remote or alpine regions, as the weather can change from benign sunshine to life-threatening, hypothermia inducing conditions of gales and snow in a matter of hours (even in summer, in the high country). Even on day trips you should check the weather forecast, make sure you know your route, make sure someone knows where you are going and carry some rain and cold weather gear and supplies. Many places are very remote and far from help and care is recommended – every year New Zealand search and rescue teams are called in to find tourists missing in remote regions and every year, at least a few end up as hospitalised casualties.”
Wikivoyage: South Island · Wikivoyage
This itinerary uniquely blends the North Island's geothermal and Māori cultural heartland with the South Island's dramatic alpine and glaciated landscapes. Auckland and Rotorua provide accessible wildlife sanctuaries and the unique geothermal phenomena that define the North Island's volcanic plateau, which a South Island-only trip would entirely miss. Queenstown and Franz Josef deliver high-adrenaline adventure sports and majestic glacier exploration unparalleled globally, and not found with the same intensity on the North Island, unlike a Northern-only itinerary that would lack these dramatic alpine contrasts.
Across New Zealand, expect a culinary journey from Auckland’s casual Pacific Rim dining along waterfronts to Rotorua’s traditional hāngi and Queenstown’s adventure-fueled fare. Hearty pub grub and fresh West Coast seafood define Franz Josef, while ubiquitous treats like meat pies, fish 'n' chips, and hokey pokey ice cream are nationwide staples. Seek out local character in places like Arrowtown or grab a fresh catch at a seaside shop in Auckland for a quintessential Kiwi experience.

📅 Best Time to Visit
Summer (December-February) offers warm weather (15-25°C), long daylight hours, and ideal conditions for outdoor activities, though it's peak season with higher prices and crowds. Autumn (March-May) has stable weather, vibrant fall colors, and fewer crowds, with temperatures around 10-20°C. Winter (June-August) brings snow to Queenstown and Franz Josef, perfect for skiing/glacier access, but roads (e.g., Crown Range) can close; temperatures range from 0-10°C. Spring (September-November) sees thawing snow, blooming landscapes, and moderate temperatures (5-15°C) but still changeable weather.

Local Transport
Food
Activities
Expensive across the board — budget $20-35 for casual lunch, and while your accommodation budget is tight at $100/night, expect activities and intercity transport to be significant costs. Supermarket meals (Countdown, New World) are the key budget option for food.
Given your tight $350 transport budget for intercity travel, prioritize InterCity buses between Auckland, Rotorua, and Queenstown. Book tickets 2-4 weeks in advance for up to 30% savings compared to last-minute fares.
Maximize free and low-cost nature activities like hiking in Rotorua (e.g., Redwood Forest trails) and Queenstown (Queenstown Hill, Ben Lomond Track). This can save $50-100+ per person per paid activity, crucial for your tight activity budget.
For food, make heavy use of local supermarkets like Countdown or New World, especially in Queenstown where budget food options are scarce. Aim for at least 1-2 meals per day from groceries to keep your $40 daily food budget for two on track.
Leverage free Wi-Fi at Auckland Airport, public libraries (e.g., Auckland offers 100MB-1GB/day per IP address), and Skycity food courts in major cities to minimize data usage and avoid purchasing an expensive local SIM card if not strictly necessary.

Free and without sign-inTrip Summary
- Always check MetService.com or local i-SITE visitor centers for the latest weather and track conditions before tramping or driving in alpine areas (e.g., Southern Alps), as conditions change rapidly.
- If driving in Queenstown-Lakes region during winter (June-August), especially over the Crown Range between Queenstown and Wanaka, ensure your rental car has snow chains and know how to fit them; road closures are common.
- Respect all safety signs and barriers around Rotorua's geothermal parks (e.g., Te Puia, Wai-O-Tapu); the hot water and mud from springs are boiling, and superheated steam can cause eruptions.
- When exploring Auckland on foot, avoid walking alone late at night on Karangahape Road (K Rd) due to increased disorderly behaviour in the pub and club areas.
- Keep drinks in view and do not accept drinks from strangers at pubs/clubs in Queenstown to avoid drink spiking, a rare but reported issue.
- For any serious outdoor activity or multi-day tramping, always use the 'Plan My Walk' app or website provided by the Department of Conservation (DOC) to register your intentions and check for specific track alerts.
- Withdraw cash from an ATM at Auckland Airport or within town upon arrival; while cards are widely accepted, smaller rural shops or markets in places like Franz Josef might prefer cash, and having some for emergencies is wise.
- If relying on public transport, research intercity bus services like InterCity or NakedBus well in advance, especially for routes between Rotorua and Queenstown, as New Zealand is highly car-dependent and bus schedules can be infrequent outside main routes.
- 1Waterproof shell jacket (for unpredictable weather)
- 2Layered clothing (merino wool base recommended)
- 3Grippy waterproof hiking boots (for tracks, glaciers)
- 4Swimsuit + flip-flops (Rotorua geothermal, Franz Josef hot pools)
- 5Warm hat + gloves (alpine regions, winter, early mornings)
- 6Insect repellent (DEET for sandflies on West Coast)
- 7Eye mask (for long summer daylight hours)
- 8Offline maps (Google Maps/MetService downloads)
- 9Portable dry bag (for electronics on boat trips, rain)
- 10Compact umbrella (for sudden rain showers)
Note: Travel conditions, regulations, and local customs may change. We recommend verifying essential details — such as visa requirements, emergency contacts, and payment options — closer to your travel date.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Most nationalities, including US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian citizens, can enter New Zealand visa-free for up to three months, provided they have an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) which must be obtained online prior to travel (NZ$17-23, valid for two years). Indian citizens typically require a visitor visa obtained in advance. All travelers need a passport valid for at least three months beyond their intended departure date and proof of an onward ticket. Other nationalities should check immigration.govt.nz for specific requirements.
Local Customs & Etiquette
When greeted by Māori, the traditional 'hongi' (pressing noses and foreheads) is a sign of respect, but a handshake is also common. Always remove your shoes before entering a private Māori wharenui (meeting house) or someone's home. Don't sit on tables or pillows, as these are considered tapu (sacred/restricted). Tipping is not customary or expected in New Zealand for general services like restaurants, taxis, or hotels; exceptional service might warrant a small gesture, but it's not a cultural norm.
Safety Overview
New Zealand is generally very safe, but specific localized risks exist. In Queenstown, car break-ins are the most common offense against tourists; always remove valuables. Auckland has higher rates of theft and robbery compared to other parts of NZ, particularly requiring caution late at night on Karangahape Road. In Rotorua, the geothermal areas pose a unique hazard: always respect safety barriers as hot springs and mud are boiling, and superheated steam can cause sudden eruptions. When tramping or driving in the South Island's alpine regions, be prepared for extremely changeable weather that can quickly turn from benign to life-threatening due to strong gales and hypothermia-inducing cold.

Most visitors from countries like the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia need to apply for an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) online before travel, which is valid for up to two years for multiple short visits (up to three months per visit). Citizens from other countries, such as India, typically require a full visitor visa. Always ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date.
New Zealand is considered very safe for travelers, including solo females. Serious crime is rare. However, be aware of specific local risks: car break-ins in Queenstown (secure valuables), and minor thefts in Auckland (especially late on Karangahape Road). When enjoying Rotorua's geothermal areas, strictly observe safety barriers. For outdoor activities in the South Island, especially tramping, be prepared for unpredictable weather changes and inform someone of your plans using the DOC's Plan My Walk app.
New Zealand is a highly car-dependent country, so renting a car or campervan offers the most flexibility for exploring, especially between towns like Rotorua, Franz Josef, and Queenstown. Major intercity bus services (InterCity) connect main centers, but service can be infrequent in rural areas. Domestic flights are efficient for connecting Auckland to Queenstown, or Auckland to Rotorua. Consider the scenic TranzAlpine train across the South Island if time permits for a unique experience.
The best time depends on your activities. Summer (Dec-Feb) is ideal for beaches and hiking but busiest. Autumn (Mar-May) offers stable weather, beautiful fall colors, and fewer crowds. Winter (Jun-Aug) is perfect for skiing in Queenstown or viewing glaciers in Franz Josef, but roads can be icy. Spring (Sep-Nov) sees nature blooming with moderate temperatures. For the most balanced experience without extreme crowds, aim for shoulder seasons like autumn or spring.
Upon arrival at Auckland Airport, you can purchase prepaid SIM cards from providers like Spark, Vodafone, or 2degrees; duty-free options might be slightly cheaper. Free Wi-Fi is available at Auckland Airport and some public libraries, but coverage outside main towns is limited, particularly on the West Coast south of Franz Josef. Hotels and motels often offer Wi-Fi, sometimes for a fee. Download offline maps and essential apps before venturing into remote areas.
No, tipping is not customary or expected for any service in New Zealand, including at restaurants, cafes, hotels, or for taxi drivers. Service charges are typically included in prices. While a small tip for truly exceptional service might be accepted, it's not a cultural norm and will not be expected.
Pack layers, including a waterproof shell jacket, as New Zealand's weather is highly changeable. Grippy, waterproof hiking boots are essential for exploring tracks and glaciers. Bring a swimsuit for Rotorua's geothermal pools and Franz Josef's hot pools. A warm hat and gloves are advisable even outside winter for alpine areas. Due to sandflies on the West Coast, strong insect repellent is a must, and an eye mask is useful for long summer daylight hours.
From Auckland Airport, the cheapest and most popular option is the SkyBus service, which runs regularly to central Auckland (SkyCity, Queen Street) and costs around NZ$17-20. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also available but are significantly more expensive, typically NZ$60-80 depending on traffic. Car rental desks are located at the airport if you plan to drive.
