10-day Chile trip — Santiago to Valparaiso to San Pedro de Atacama to Puerto Varas. Day-by-day route, attractions & food.
Part one
Is this trip for you?
This Chilean route picks four distinct regions that showcase the country's diverse character, from cosmopolitan cities to extreme desert and lush lakes. Santiago's vibrant arts scene and Valparaíso's colorful historic hills offer a different feel than Argentina's more European capital, Buenos Aires, or the traditional Andes villages of Peru. San Pedro de Atacama delivers stark desert landscapes and stargazing unparalleled by any other South American desert. Puerto Varas adds dramatic lake and volcano scenery, a contrast missed in trips focused solely on central Chile.

📅 Best Time to Visit
Central Chile (Santiago, Valparaiso) is best from September to November (spring) or March to May (autumn) for pleasant temperatures, around 15-25 C, and fewer crowds. Summer (December-February) is hot, reaching 30 C in Santiago, drawing larger beach crowds. The Atacama Desert (San Pedro) is good year-round, with daytime temperatures 20-25 C and cold nights. Patagonia (Puerto Varas) is ideal in summer (December-March) for hiking and milder weather, 10-20 C, though rain is possible any time.
Part two
The plan, day by day
10-day trip
This itinerary prioritizes a wide-ranging exploration of Chile, moving from Santiago's urban and wine scenes to Valparaiso's coastal hills. You will then experience the dramatic Atacama Desert landscapes and the German-influenced Lake District. This means skipping the iconic granite spires and glacial lakes of Torres del Paine in Patagonia.
Also, the challenging multi-day treks through the mountains of Cajon del Maipo are not included. To experience Chile's dramatic southern wilderness, add four days to visit Torres del Paine National Park. You could trek among towering peaks, spot guanacos, and witness vast glaciers near Puerto Natales.
This itinerary follows a balanced pace — intense sightseeing days alternate with recovery days for rest and spontaneous exploration. Want a different pace? Create a custom version with your preferences.

Activities
Chile is moderate overall; expect around $100/night for mid-range hotels and $15-25 for sit-down meals. San Pedro de Atacama is an exception, being one of the country's most expensive destinations.
In Santiago, use the Metro system with a Bip! card. Single rides cost around 800 CLP ($1 USD), significantly less than taxi fares.
Be aware of ATM fees; some like Santander charge around 8,500 CLP ($9 USD) per withdrawal. Plan cash needs to minimize these fees.
For meals in San Pedro de Atacama, look for smaller local eateries or cook some of your own food. This helps keep your daily food budget closer to $30 per person.
Allocate a portion of your activities budget to a guided tour in the Atacama Desert. While pricey (some tours can be $50-100+ per person), the unique landscapes and stargazing are worth the investment.

Before you go
Santiago has modern metro; buses connect cities
Bip! card (Santiago)
Get a Bip! card for Santiago metro and buses. Turbus for intercity.
- For transit in Santiago, get a Bip! card at any Metro station or large bus terminal — load it with CLP $3,000-5,000 for a few days of travel.
- Withdraw cash at Santander ATMs (in Puerto Rio Tranquilo, fee is CLP $8,500) or Scotia bank ATMs (in Coyhaique, usually free).
- If driving the Carretera Austral, be aware of dust clouds from passing cars; some locals drive fast on unpaved sections.
- In San Pedro de Atacama, secure bicycles and rental cars carefully; theft happens occasionally.
- For hiking or climbing, especially in Patagonia, bring appropriate gear and check local conditions before setting out.
- Always confirm if card payments are accepted before ordering in smaller towns or local eateries outside Santiago and Valparaiso.
- Purchase a local SIM card from Claro, Entel, Movistar, or WOM at Santiago airport or any urban store for reliable data.
- Avoid taxis waiting directly outside hotels or main tourist sites in Santiago and Valparaiso; walk a block away and flag a metered one or use Uber/Cabify.

Visa & Entry Requirements
Most nationalities, including US, EU, UK, Canada, and Australia, can enter Chile visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism. Indian citizens need to apply for a visa in advance. All travelers must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay. Check the official Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for specific requirements based on your nationality.
SIM & Connectivity
SIM Options
📍 Major airports (Santiago SCL), operator stores in cities, some convenience stores
Hotels, restaurants, and ski resorts like Valle Nevado offer reliable Wi-Fi. Many cafes in Santiago and Valparaiso provide free Wi-Fi with a purchase. San Pedro de Atacama has several 'cibercafes' with internet access, but the town's national network link can be slow.
Useful Apps
Cellular coverage drops significantly outside major built-up areas and highways. Expect limited or no service on remote stretches like the Carretera Austral or deep within Lauca National Park.

Many nationalities, including citizens from the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia, can enter Chile visa-free for up to 90 days. Indian citizens generally require a visa obtained in advance. Always check your specific country's requirements with the Chilean consulate or embassy before travel, and ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.
Chile is generally safe for solo female travelers, particularly in major tourist areas like Santiago, San Pedro de Atacama, and Puerto Varas. Basic precautions, such as avoiding walking alone in unlit areas at night and being mindful of your belongings in crowded places, are advisable. San Pedro is notably low on violent crime. Use ride-sharing apps like Uber or Cabify in cities at night.
The currency in Chile is the Chilean Peso (CLP). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in cities and larger towns. However, it's wise to carry some cash, especially in smaller establishments, rural areas, or for tips. ATMs are available, but some foreign cards may incur fees.
Yes, tipping is customary in Chile. In restaurants, a 10% tip is standard for good service and is often included as a 'suggested tip' on your bill; you can choose to modify this amount. For taxi drivers, rounding up the fare is common, while hotel staff may appreciate a small tip for luggage or room cleaning.
Pack layered clothing, as temperatures can vary significantly between day and night, especially in the Atacama Desert or Patagonia. Include a windproof and waterproof jacket, comfortable hiking boots, a sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and sunglasses. For cities, comfortable walking shoes and versatile outfits are suitable.
The best time depends on the regions you plan to visit. For central Chile (Santiago, Valparaiso), spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May) offer pleasant weather. San Pedro de Atacama is great year-round, but Patagonia (Puerto Varas) is best during summer (December-March) for hiking and milder conditions, though expect some rain.
Chile has an extensive long-distance bus network for inter-city travel, which is reliable and affordable. For cities like Santiago, the Metro and local buses are efficient. Renting a car is recommended for exploring remote regions like the Carretera Austral. Domestic flights connect major regions, especially to Patagonia and the Atacama Desert.
Be cautious of pickpockets in crowded areas, especially on Santiago's public transport and in Valparaiso's tourist zones. Secure your bags and keep valuables out of sight. In some cities, taxi drivers may try to overcharge; always ensure the meter is running or agree on a fare beforehand. There are no prevalent large-scale tourist scams specific to Chile.
