A look inside the Packing List template

Google Sheets: one tick column per traveler, items grouped by category.
The printable PDF: two columns of tick boxes, grouped by category.
Excel: the same four tick columns, ready to print or fill on screen.
Word: checkboxes you can click, and room to add your own items.

A blank packing list you can copy, print or download: the 53 things most trips need, sorted into documents and money, clothing, tech, health and gear, with room to add your own. The Google Sheets and Excel versions give every traveler their own tick column, so a family packs from one shared list.

Rather start from a list made for your trip? The packing list generator builds one for your destination, month and trip length, with the weather gear that month needs, and downloads in the same formats.

How to use the packing list template

  1. 1Pick a format above: copy it into Google Sheets, print the PDF, or download Excel or Word.
  2. 2In Google Sheets or Excel, rename the Traveler 1 to 4 columns to the people going, and delete the columns you do not need.
  3. 3Cross out what you will not take and add rows for anything the trip needs that is missing.
  4. 4Tick each item as it goes into the bag; in a shared Sheet everyone ticks their own column.

Editing tips

Pack to the list, not the wardrobe

Lay out everything on the list before anything goes into the case. What is left on the bed at the end is what you did not need; cut it from the list for next time.

Keep a carry-on line

Mark the items that must travel with you (ID, medication, chargers, keys) with a C in the item cell, and pack those last so they are on top.

Frequently asked questions

Is this packing list template free?

Yes. Copy the Google Sheet, print the PDF or download the Excel or Word file. There is no email gate and nothing to sign up for.

How is this different from the packing list generator?

The template is the same starting list for every trip, blank for you to edit. The generator builds a list for one trip: it adds weather gear from the measured climate of your destination for the month you travel, counts clothes for your trip length, and adds rows for kids, flights and the kind of trip.

Can several people use one list?

Yes. The Google Sheets and Excel versions have a tick column for each of four travelers: rename them, share the Sheet, and everyone ticks their own items. Add a column for a fifth person by copying one.

How many clothes does the list assume?

A week: five everyday outfits and eight of underwear and socks, the counts most trips of seven days need. Scale them for your trip, or use the generator, which counts them for your length and adds a laundry kit once a trip outlasts a week of clothes.
