A November trip turns on two questions, why this month and why this place. November's answer to the first is its festivals: Day of the Dead in Mexico, Diwali in Jaipur and Vienna's first Christmas market of the season. The seasons turn too, bringing red maples to Kyoto, winter sun to Luxor and Cancún and spring to Cape Town and Buenos Aires.
For November 2026, build the trip around a date: Diwali in Jaipur on November 8, Vienna's Christmas market from November 13, Kiyomizu-dera's night viewing in Kyoto from November 21 or New York's 100th parade on November 26. For Day of the Dead, arrive in Oaxaca by October 30 or in Mexico City by October 31. Yi Peng's 2026 dates are not out yet, so keep your Chiang Mai dates loose. Marrakech, Tenerife, Cancún and Luxor have winter sun. Cape Town and Buenos Aires are in spring, and Lisbon and Seville are mild autumn cities.
- Festivals: Day of the Dead (November 1 and 2), Diwali (November 8), Vienna's Christmas market (from November 13) and the 100th Macy's parade (November 26).
- Warmest: Chiang Mai, highs of 31.8 °C (89 °F); warmest sea: Curaçao, 28.7 °C (84 °F).
- Driest: Luxor, with almost no rain.

Autumn cities and the first Christmas markets
Cool days make November walking weather in these cities. Maples turn in Kyoto and New York, St Martin's Day brings new wine and roast chestnuts, and Vienna opens its Christmas market.
Kyoto, Japan
Best for red maples and temple night viewings
- Weather: highs 17.6 °C (64 °F), lows 8.5 °C (47 °F); 76 mm (3.0 in) of rain over about seven wet days
- Dates: Kifune Shrine maple light-up, November 7 to 24, 2026, sunset to 8:30 pm; Kiyomizu-dera autumn night viewing, November 21 to 30, last entry 9 pm
- Season: shoulder, 1.06 times an average month in Kyoto Prefecture
- Daily budget: about $110 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 7-day Japan itinerary, Japan guide, best time to visit Japan
From mid-November the maples in Kyoto's temple gardens turn red, and shrines and temples light them after dark. Japan's historic capital is a working city, its temples and shrines tucked into ordinary neighborhoods. Cool November days suit long walks between the gardens.
Leaf color at Kiyomizu-dera peaks between mid-November and early December (the timing shifts every year). Be in Kyoto from November 21 to 24, when Kifune Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera are both lit after dark. The famous gardens are crowded in leaf season. Reach Arashiyama and the Togetsukyō bridge early in the day.
Go to the temple gardens, Eikan-dō and Tōfuku-ji above all. At Tōfuku-ji, view the maple valley from the Tsūten-kyō bridge, as tradition has it. After the night viewing at Kiyomizu-dera, walk the short way to Gion for the rest of the evening. Try yudofu (tofu simmered with kombu) and obanzai, home cooking from Kyoto produce. For matcha to take home, go to Ippodo Tea, open 10 am to 5 pm.

Lisbon, Portugal
Best for roasted chestnuts in the low season
- Weather: highs 18.2 °C (65 °F), lows 11.6 °C (53 °F); 76 mm (3.0 in) of rain over about eight wet days
- Dates: Web Summit, November 9 to 12, 2026; St Martin's Day, November 11
- Season: low, 0.88 times an average month in Greater Lisbon
- Daily budget: about $194 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 7-day Portugal itinerary, 10-day Portugal road trip, Portugal guide
On St Martin's Day, November 11, Lisbon and the rest of Portugal roast chestnuts and taste the new wine at the magusto. The fine spell around it is called St Martin's Summer, though rain is common at this time of year. By November the summer crowds have left Lisbon, the hill city above the Tagus.
Choose Lisbon over Seville if you want a city past its busy season. Web Summit brings more than 70,000 people to Lisbon in the second week. Book early for it.
Ride Tram 28 up through the Alfama, the old quarter that survived the 1755 earthquake, and save the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém for a wet day. Pastéis de nata, the custard tarts, descend from the Jerónimos monks' recipe. Have them with a glass of ginjinha, the sour-cherry liqueur. Take home tinned fish from Conserveira de Lisboa, and keep one night for fado.

Seville, Spain
Best for mild weather, a film festival and tapas bars
- Weather: highs 20.7 °C (69 °F), lows 9.9 °C (50 °F); 60 mm (2.3 in) of rain over about six wet days
- Dates: Seville European Film Festival, November 6 to 14, 2026
- Season: shoulder, 1.02 times an average month in the city's hotels
- Daily budget: about $170 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: southern Spain itinerary, Spain guide
Early November brings Seville its European film festival. Seville is the warm pick of mainland Europe in November, but you may face heavy bursts of rain. Moorish palaces and a great Gothic cathedral sit beside its streets of tapas bars, where an evening means moving from one bar to the next.
Seville is warmer, drier and cheaper than Lisbon, so pick it for the weather and the price. The 23rd edition of the festival runs through the first half of the month, and its program has 66 Andalusian titles, 21 of them world premieres.
Give the morning to the Real Alcázar and the cathedral, then go up to the rooftop walkway of the Metropol Parasol. Later, take a long walk through the Parque de María Luisa to the Plaza de España. At the tapas bars, order the traditional espinacas con garbanzos, spinach and chickpeas, and pringá, slow-cooked meats that also come spread on a mollete roll for breakfast. End the day at a flamenco show in the city that opened the first flamenco singers' café in 1881.

New York, USA
Best for the 100th Thanksgiving parade and fall foliage
- Weather: highs 13.0 °C (55 °F), lows 3.7 °C (39 °F); 81 mm (3.2 in) of rain over about seven wet days
- Dates: Winter Village at Bryant Park, open from October 28, 2026; New York City Marathon, November 1; 100th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, November 26, broadcast from 8:30 am
- Daily budget: about $363 a person, mid-range, the highest here
- Plan it: 3-day New York itinerary, weekend getaways from New York
New York's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade turns 100 on November 26, with a record 100 inflatables. In November the maples of Central Park turn orange and red, later than the countryside around the city. New York is a city to walk, from the big museums and Broadway to the cafés and jazz clubs of Greenwich Village.
Come early in the month for the marathon, which crosses all five boroughs on November 1. Come at the end for the parade. Both days bring crowds. For Thanksgiving week, book a Broadway show early. Nights drop to 3.7 °C (39 °F), so pack a warm coat.
Walk Central Park, then start on the museums at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the Americas. Spend an evening in a Greenwich Village jazz club. The New York classics to eat are hot pastrami on rye, a bagel with lox (cured salmon) and a slice of New York-style cheesecake. At the Strand, pick up a used book or one of its totes.

Vienna, Austria
Best for the opening weeks of the Christmas markets
- Weather: highs 9.6 °C (49 °F), lows 4.5 °C (40 °F); 47 mm (1.8 in) of rain over about seven wet days
- Dates: St Martin's Day, November 11, 2026; Christmas market on the Rathausplatz, November 13 to December 26, daily 10 am to 10 pm
- Season: shoulder, 1.02 times an average month; December is the busiest month
- Daily budget: about $199 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 3-day Vienna itinerary, 7-day Austria itinerary, Christmas markets guide
On November 13 the Christmas market opens on Vienna's Rathausplatz, with an ice rink beside it, and the old imperial capital starts its run-up to Christmas. You get the lights and the mulled wine a month before December's crowds.
In the organizer's words, the market "is considered one of Europe’s biggest and most beautiful Christmas markets". Go once the market opens on November 13. St Martin's Day ends the wine-growers' year, and Martinigansl (roast goose) is the dish of the season. From the airport, expect a replacement bus in place of the City Airport Train until October 2027.
In a coffee house, have a slice of Sachertorte, chocolate sponge with apricot jam. Tour Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens. Hear a concert in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic. Ride the Riesenrad in the Prater at dusk, and warm up with roasted chestnuts from a Maronistand street booth. For a gift, take home a snow globe from Original Wiener Schneekugel.

November festivals with 2026 dates
Two of November's festivals, the Day of the Dead in Mexico and Diwali in India, have fixed 2026 dates to plan around. Yi Peng in northern Thailand follows the full moon, and its 2026 dates are not out yet.
Oaxaca, Mexico
Best for Day of the Dead altars and comparsas
- Weather: highs 29.2 °C (85 °F), lows 12.4 °C (54 °F); 13 mm (0.5 in) of rain
- Dates: Day of the Dead program, over 100 events, October 26 to November 3, 2026; Verbena Xandú, October 30; Gran Comparsa, October 31; Day of the Dead, November 1 and 2
- Season: peak, hotel occupancy 1.15 times the year's average, worked out from year-to-date tables
- Plan it: Mexico festivals guide, Mexico packing list
For the Day of the Dead on November 1 and 2, families in Oaxaca build altars of marigolds, candles and photographs. The cemeteries fill with candlelit vigils. Oaxaca is a colonial city of baroque plazas and busy markets, with a strong Indigenous culture. November opens its dry season while the valleys are still green from the rains.
Arrive by October 30, when the free Verbena Xandú fills the Zócalo with tamales, pan and chocolate. The Gran Comparsa parades the next day. Evenings are far colder than the days.
See the altars by day, then spend a night at one of the cemetery vigils. Visit the church and former monastery of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, then eat at the Mercado 20 de Noviembre, south of the Zócalo. Mole negro is the dark sauce made with chocolate, and a tlayuda the big crisp tortilla of Oaxaca; try both. Taste mezcal in the state that makes about 90% of Mexico's mezcal.

Mexico City, Mexico
Best for candlelit cemeteries, a monumental altar and lit avenues
- Weather: highs 24.8 °C (77 °F), lows 8.6 °C (47 °F); 41 mm (1.6 in) of rain
- Dates: Day of the Dead program, 2026: Zócalo altar, October 29 to November 2; parade, October 31; Mixquic cemeteries, October 31 to November 2; Reforma lights, until November 8
- Season: peak, hotel occupancy 1.15 times the year's average, the year's highest month
- Plan it: Mexico, Guatemala and Belize itinerary, Mexico festivals guide
Mexico City keeps the Day of the Dead going longer than Oaxaca, with its lights on Reforma up until November 8. Built over the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, it is the oldest capital in the Americas. The first days of November are mild and dry, and marigold altars fill the city.
If you can only arrive after October 31, choose Mexico City over Oaxaca, whose Verbena and Gran Comparsa are over by then. In Mexico City the Zócalo altar and the Mixquic vigils last to November 2.
Begin at the monumental altar in the Zócalo, with its 32-meter Catrina. The Templo Mayor, the Aztec main temple, stands beside it. Go out to Coyoacán for the Frida Kahlo Museum, and take a trajinera along the Xochimilco canals. Look for pan de muerto, the sugared bread of the dead. Street stalls sell tlacoyos (thick masa cakes with toppings) and the guajolota, a tamal sandwich. Spend an evening at the candlelit cemeteries of Mixquic. Get there hours early for the holiday traffic, and ask before you take photos.

Chiang Mai, Thailand
Best for sky lanterns at the Yi Peng full moon
- Weather: highs 31.8 °C (89 °F), lows 19.9 °C (68 °F); 30 mm (1.2 in) of rain
- Dates: Yi Peng, at the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, usually in November; 2026 program not yet published
- Season: peak, 1.16 times an average month in hotel guests, Chiang Mai Province
- Daily budget: about $59 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 4-day Chiang Mai itinerary, 10-day Thailand itinerary, Thailand guide
For Yi Peng at the November full moon, thousands of paper lanterns rise over the old Lanna capital of Chiang Mai. At the same time, Loy Krathong sets candlelit krathongs (small floating baskets) on the river.
The rainy season ends in November and the dry season begins. Days still reach 31.8 °C (89 °F); keep temple walks and hill treks for the morning. Hotels were 93% full in November 2025, so book as soon as the festival dates are out.
By day, climb the 309 steps to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep above the city. Back in the old city, where Buddhist temples stand on the streets inside the moat, walk to Wat Phra Singh. Out of town, you can climb the limestone of Bua Tong, the Sticky Waterfall. The two dishes to try are khao soi (the northern curry noodle soup) and sai ua, Chiang Mai sausage. On the festival nights, watch the lanterns go up, then float a krathong of your own.

Jaipur, India
Best for Diwali lights, with the Pushkar fair a side trip
- Weather: highs 29.3 °C (85 °F), lows 13.7 °C (57 °F); 9 mm (0.4 in) of rain on about one wet day
- Dates: Diwali and Lakshmi Puja, November 8, 2026; Pushkar camel fair, November 17 to 24
- Season: peak, foreign arrivals 1.17 times an average month for India as a whole
- Plan it: weekend getaways from Delhi
Diwali lights Jaipur on November 8. The Pink City, named for the color of its old-city buildings, is one of the earliest planned cities of modern India. November brings warm, dry days after the summer heat.
Peak-season rooms in Jaipur cost nearly double the off-season ones. Stay on for the third week and you can add the Pushkar camel fair as a side trip.
At Amer Fort, look for the mirror mosaics of its Sheesh Mahal. Back in town, see the Jantar Mantar observatory. Dal baati churma is lentils with baked wheat rolls and a sweet crumble; have it with gatte ki sabzi, gram-flour dumplings in a yogurt curry. Finish with mawa kachori, one of the city's sweets. Watch the sunset from Nahargarh Fort above the old city.

Warm places for winter sun
November takes the summer heat off Marrakech and Luxor, and the sea off Tenerife and Valletta stays warm enough to swim in. In the Caribbean, the hurricane season winds down.
Marrakech, Morocco
Best for film festival week and medina walks
- Weather: highs 22.7 °C (73 °F), lows 11.3 °C (52 °F); 40 mm (1.6 in) of rain
- Dates: Marrakech International Film Festival, November 20 to 28, 2026
- Daily budget: about $100 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 10-day Morocco itinerary
The Marrakech International Film Festival opens in the third week of November, when cooler autumn days make the walled medina good walking again. Beyond its souks, palaces and riad rooftops, the Atlas Mountains sit on the skyline.
Time the trip for festival week, when Marion Cotillard presides over the jury of the 23rd edition. Days are warm enough to walk the souks to the Koutoubia, but the rooftop evenings turn cool.
Go early to the courtyards of the Bahia Palace, then visit the Jardin Majorelle, the garden Yves Saint Laurent restored. Marrakech's own dish is tanjia marrakchia, beef slow-cooked in a ceramic pot; eat it with msemen, the layered Moroccan flatbread. Spend the evening on Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square, when food stalls and performers take over. End it in a hammam.

Tenerife, Spain
Best for volcano hikes and the start of whale season
- Weather: highs 22.9 °C (73 °F), lows 16.3 °C (61 °F); 40 mm (1.6 in) of rain; sea 22.0 °C (72 °F)
- Season: shoulder, 1.09 times an average month in Santa Cruz's hotels
- Plan it: Spain guide
November opens the winter whale-watching season off Tenerife. The season runs through February. The island is volcanic, known for year-round sun and built around Teide, Spain's highest mountain.
Santa Cruz gets 40 mm (1.6 in) of rain to Valletta's 102 mm (4.0 in), and the water is about as warm. Pick Tenerife over Valletta for a swim in a European sea in November. If you plan to climb Teide, book the summit permit well ahead.
Hike in the national park around the peak. Walk the UNESCO-listed old town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna and the laurel-forest trails of Anaga. For dinner, find a guachinche, a country tavern serving its own wine. Start with papas arrugadas, boiled potatoes with mojo rojo (a chili and garlic sauce). Then try conejo en salmorejo, rabbit in a Canarian marinade.

Valletta, Malta
Best for a walkable fortress capital out of peak season
- Weather: highs 22.1 °C (72 °F), lows 15.5 °C (60 °F); 102 mm (4.0 in) of rain over about nine wet days; sea 22.1 °C (72 °F)
- Season: low, just: 0.89 times an average month for Malta as a whole
By November, Valletta is past its summer peak, but the sea is still warm enough for a swim. The European Union's smallest capital is a walled city whose harbor forts stood in for King's Landing in Game of Thrones.
For a city break, pick Valletta over Tenerife, since the whole capital is walkable. Expect more rain than in Tenerife.
Start with pastizzi (savory pastries filled with ricotta or peas), then walk the old town and its ramparts. Look out over the Grand Harbour from the Upper Barrakka Gardens, and see Caravaggio's largest canvas in St John's Co-Cathedral. Later, have ftira, the ring bread filled with tuna or sardines. At dinner, order stuffat tal-fenek, the rabbit stew often called Malta's national dish. On another day, take the ferry across the harbor to the Three Cities.

Cancún, Mexico
Best for Caribbean beaches as hurricane season ends
- Weather: highs 30.5 °C (87 °F), lows 20.5 °C (69 °F); 107 mm (4.2 in) of rain over about 12 wet days; sea 28.2 °C (83 °F)
- Season: shoulder, hotel occupancy 1.03 times the year's average
- Daily budget: about $166 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: Mexico, Guatemala and Belize itinerary
November gives Cancún warm sea and beach weather before the December rates arrive. Cancún's resorts and nightlife line up along the Hotel Zone, with the Riviera Maya coast running south from it.
The Atlantic hurricane season is past its peak in November and ends on November 30. Of the two Caribbean picks, choose Cancún for the drier month, with about 12 wet days to Curaçao's 20.
On a showery day, go to the Museo Maya de Cancún in the Hotel Zone. Cross by ferry to Isla Mujeres, and snorkel over the 500 sculptures of MUSA. The Yucatecan menu runs to cochinita pibil (slow-roast pork) and tikin xic, fish marinated in achiote. Try panuchos too, fried tortillas stuffed with black beans. Give one day to the Maya ruins, at Tulum on the coast or Chichén Itzá inland.

Willemstad, Curaçao
Best for reef snorkeling and a pastel UNESCO harbor town
- Weather: in Willemstad, highs 31.4 °C (89 °F), lows 25.4 °C (78 °F); 150 mm (5.9 in) of rain over about 20 wet days; sea 28.7 °C (84 °F)
Before the high season, November lets you snorkel Curaçao's reefs in the warmest sea of the 18 places here. The largest of the ABC islands has coves and a Dutch Caribbean capital of brightly painted houses along the harbor.
The island gets the most rain too, but the rainy season drops most of it late at night or early in the morning. Curaçao also lies outside the Atlantic hurricane belt, so pick it over Cancún if the end of the hurricane season worries you.
Snorkel with turtles at Playa Lagun, a narrow cove, and hike the trails of Christoffelpark around the island's highest point. Taste the island's liqueur at the distillery in Landhuis Chobolobo. Order keshi yena, a whole cheese stuffed with spiced meat, with funchi (cornmeal) on the side. Or try stobá, a Krioyo stew. In the evening, cross the Queen Emma pontoon bridge between Punda and Otrobanda, the two UNESCO-listed halves of Willemstad's harbor front.

Luxor, Egypt
Best for temples and tombs once the heat breaks
- Weather: highs 29.6 °C (85 °F), lows 14.4 °C (58 °F); almost no rain
- Plan it: 7-day Egypt itinerary, Egypt packing list
Come to Luxor in November, once summer's heat has broken and before the biggest crowds in December and January. Luxor is ancient Thebes, its great temples standing inside the modern city and the royal tombs across the Nile on the west bank.
The days are warm and dry, and the nights are cool. See the open sites early and keep the hottest hours for a long lunch. Sail the Nile on a felucca, but know that wind can cancel the trips.
Start with the columns of Karnak, then cross the river to the tombs of the Valley of the Kings. Reach the terraced Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut first thing. Leave Luxor Temple, in the middle of town, for the late afternoon. Look for eish merahrah, the fenugreek and maize flatbread of Upper Egypt. Eat it with two Egyptian staples, ful medames (stewed fava beans) and koshary (rice, lentils and pasta under tomato sauce).

Southern spring
South of the equator, November is late spring, when jacarandas flower in Cape Town and Buenos Aires and the days grow long in Patagonia.
Cape Town, South Africa
Best for spring flowers, mountain hikes and summer's first concerts
- Weather: highs 22.9 °C (73 °F), lows 13.5 °C (56 °F); 31 mm (1.2 in) of rain; sea 15.9 °C (61 °F)
- Dates: Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts, from November 25, 2026; Festive Lights Switch-On, November 29
- Season: peak, 1.17 times an average month by international passengers at Cape Town airport, 2023
- Daily budget: about $187 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 5-day Cape Town itinerary
Cape Town's summer opens with the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts on November 25, picnics and music below Table Mountain. Late spring turns the jacarandas purple and keeps the days warm and mostly dry. The city is a harbor in a UNESCO-listed floral region with beaches and vineyards close by.
Four days after the first concert, a free show on the Grand Parade switches on the festive lights. Expect the south-easter, the strong spring wind locals call the Cape Doctor. The sea is the coolest of the 18 here, so come for the mountain and the coast road more than the beach.
Take a picnic to one of the concerts. Go up Table Mountain by cableway or on foot when the cloud is off it, then spend a day in the Stellenbosch winelands. Catch the ferry to Robben Island and drive out to Cape Point. Order bobotie (spiced minced meat baked with an egg topping), and pick up koesisters, spiced Cape Malay pastries. Share a Gatsby, the long roll stuffed with chips that was born in Cape Town.

Buenos Aires, Argentina
Best for jacaranda streets and a free museum night
- Weather: highs 26.8 °C (80 °F), lows 15.8 °C (60 °F); 96 mm (3.8 in) of rain over about seven wet days
- Dates: La Noche de los Museos, November 14, 2026, 7 pm to 2 am
- Season: peak, 1.17 times an average month, the busiest hotel month of 2024
- Daily budget: about $55 a person, mid-range, the lowest of the reliable figures here; peso prices move fast
- Plan it: 10-day Argentina itinerary, Argentina guide
In November the streets of Buenos Aires turn purple under the jacaranda, one of the city's most common street trees. November also holds the city's most important night of culture, La Noche de los Museos. Dinner in the Argentine capital starts at ten, and the tango runs past midnight.
The museum night falls on November 14, when more than 250 museums open for free; plan a long evening around it. The blossom lasts up to two months, and a few of the warm days are wet. On a tight budget, this is the city to pick.
Walk under the blossoms by day, and wander among the mausoleums of La Recoleta Cemetery, where Eva Perón is buried. Browse the antique fair in Plaza Dorrego in San Telmo. Fugazzeta, the onion pizza born in Buenos Aires, and choripán (grilled chorizo in a roll) are the two things to eat. At night, go to a milonga.

El Calafate, Argentina
Best for glaciers in spring
- Weather: highs 17.1 °C (63 °F), lows 4.9 °C (41 °F); 61 mm (2.4 in) of rain over about ten wet days
- Season: peak, 1.44 times an average month in the 12 months to November 2025
- Daily budget: about $57 a person, mid-range
- Plan it: 10-day Patagonia itinerary, Patagonia guide
November brings long spring days to the glaciers around El Calafate, a month before the December to February summer. The small town sits on the shore of Lago Argentino and is the base for Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina's largest and a UNESCO site.
The town already has more than four times as many hotel nights in November as in June. The days are mild, but pack for cold nights, wind and some rain.
Spend a day at the Perito Moreno Glacier, on its boardwalks or on the ice itself with crampons. Take a boat among the icebergs to the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers. Learn about the Southern Patagonian Ice Field at the Glaciarium, a museum of ice. For birdwatching, walk out to Laguna Nimez on the edge of town. In the evening, eat Patagonian lamb roasted over an open fire. Try anything made with calafate, the dark-blue berry the town is named after.
