Two questions decide an October trip: what the month brings, and what a place gives you only in October. The first answer is color and festivals. The leaves peak in Vermont, Quebec and the Blue Ridge, balloons fill the sky over Albuquerque and Salem gives the whole month to Halloween. Kyoto and Jaipur hold their great autumn festivals. The Mediterranean is still warm, and in Sydney it is spring.

For October 2027, go to Stowe in the first week for peak color, or to Quebec City in the second. Albuquerque's Balloon Fiesta runs from October 2 to 10, Kyoto's Jidai Matsuri is on October 22 and Diwali lights Jaipur on October 29. Salem holds Halloween all month. October is leaf season in New England, Quebec and the Blue Ridge. October's cooler days suit canyon hikes in Zion and long afternoons in Vienna's wine taverns.

Stowe, USA

Best for peak New England leaf color, early October

Stowe's fall color generally peaks in the last week of September and the first week of October. The Vermont village sits below Mount Mansfield, the state's highest mountain, and the high ground there and at Smugglers' Notch turns first.

Aim for the first week of October, and drive up to the Notch. The window is narrow and shifts every year. The road through Smugglers' Notch usually closes for winter from late October. Pack a rain jacket and a warm layer: Stowe has the coldest nights and the most wet days on this list.

Walk or cycle the Stowe Recreation Path, 5.3 miles along the valley from the village. Hike the trails of the Trapp Family Lodge and finish at its bierhall. Keep the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum on Main Street for a wet day. At Cold Hollow Cider Mill, buy fresh cider and apple cider donuts. Take home a bottle of Vermont maple syrup.

Asheville, USA

Best for Blue Ridge color and a mountain craft fair

Later in October, Asheville's fall color comes down from the Blue Ridge to the valleys, and the city holds the October edition of the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands. Asheville is a mountain city of artists' studios and craft breweries, still rebuilding from Hurricane Helene's floods of September 2024.

The color starts on the mountaintops in late September, so come early in the season for the high Parkway and later for the valleys. The Parkway north of town toward Mount Mitchell was still closed for Helene damage in October 2026. Check the road closures before you drive it.

Tour the Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned house in the United States. Walk the studios of the River Arts District, and end the day with a sunset drink at the Grove Park Inn on Sunset Mountain. Eat barbecue at 12 Bones in the River Arts District, and try a few of the city's 50 or so craft breweries. For handmade Southern Appalachian craft, go to the Folk Art Center on the Parkway.

Quebec City, Canada

Best for peak fall foliage in the first two weeks of October

  • Weather: highs 13.7 °C (57 °F), lows 4.1 °C (39 °F); 135 mm (5.3 in) of rain over about 11 wet days
  • Season: peak, hotel occupancy 1.12 times the year's average in the Québec region

Quebec City's leaves peak in the first two weeks of October, on the Plains of Abraham and in the parks around the city. Old Québec, a UNESCO site, keeps the only fortified city walls left in the Americas north of Mexico.

If you are also going to Stowe, come here in the second week, after Stowe's peak. Each fall, tens of thousands of snow geese stop on the St. Lawrence mudflats at Cap Tourmente, just outside the city. Bring warm clothes for nights that fall to 4.1 °C (39 °F).

Start at the Château Frontenac, the railway hotel in the Upper Town, then walk down Rue du Petit-Champlain in the Lower Town. Give a day to the farms, orchards and vineyards of Île d'Orléans, 5 km from downtown. Order tourtière, Quebec's meat pie. Finish with pouding chômeur, cake baked in maple syrup and cream.

Zion National Park, USA

Best for cooler canyon hikes before late-October color

At the end of October, Zion's fall color reaches Zion Canyon, after starting on the highest ground. Highs of 23.3 °C (74 °F) in Springdale, the gateway town at the canyon mouth, make October good hiking weather.

Come in the last week for color in the canyon. Carry layers: temperatures can swing 17 °C (30 °F) in a day. October is busier than August or September, and the canyon drive runs on shuttle buses only, so ride an early one. The fall permit lottery for Angels Landing closes on July 20. After that, try the day-before lottery.

Wade The Narrows from the bottom up along the Virgin River, after checking the flow and closures. Ride the paved Pa'rus Trail, the one trail open to bikes, or take a guided horse or mule ride before the season ends on October 31. Try Utah scones (fried sweet dough) and fry sauce, the ketchup and mayonnaise dip popularized in Utah.

Vienna, Austria

Best for new-wine taverns and museum weather

October falls in Vienna's new-wine season: at the Heurige, the wine taverns among the vineyards inside the city limits, the year's wine may be called Heuriger until St Martin's Day, November 11. On the 2026 Long Night of Museums, October 3, about 670 museums, galleries and cultural venues across Austria stayed open late.

Time the trip for the Long Night once its 2027 date is out. Vienna's hotels were 77% full in October 2025, so book early. If you fly in, the City Airport Train runs as a bus until October 31, 2027, but the REX 7 train still reaches the main station in about 20 minutes.

Spend an afternoon at a Heuriger in the vineyards. In town, see the tiled roof of St. Stephen's Cathedral and walk the Ringstrasse, 5.3 km where the city walls stood. On a Saturday, browse the flea market at the Naschmarkt. Order Wiener schnitzel, the breaded veal cutlet. For dessert, have a slice of Sachertorte, chocolate cake with apricot jam. For a gift, take home porcelain from Augarten.

Festivals to plan October around

October's festivals ride the season, from the cool mornings that lift Albuquerque's balloons to the dry weeks after the monsoon that frame Diwali in Jaipur.

Albuquerque, USA

Best for the Balloon Fiesta, early October

The 55th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta fills the sky over the city from October 2 to 10, with more than 500 balloons. Grown from 13 balloons in 1972, the Fiesta is the largest balloon festival in the world. Cool October mornings and the "Albuquerque box", winds that carry balloons south and then back north, let many land near where they started.

Keep several mornings free, since balloons do not fly in bad weather. Dress warmly for launches, which start in the cold before sunrise. Book a room well ahead.

Stay for an evening balloon glow, and ride the Sandia Peak Tramway, the longest aerial tram in the Americas. Walk the adobe blocks of Old Town and its church, and visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, run by the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico. Order a green chile cheeseburger and sopaipillas, then try biscochitos, the anise cookie that is New Mexico's state cookie.

Salem, USA

Best for a month-long Halloween festival in the Witch City

Haunted Happenings fills Salem's October with a Grand Parade, costume balls, ghost tours and haunted houses. In the organizer's words, the festival is "a festive celebration of Halloween and fall in New England running annually, October 1-31". The festival grew out of the history of the 1692 witch trials, in which more than 200 people were accused.

More than a million people now visit Salem each October, by the festival's count. Go on a weekday and arrive before midday. Take the commuter rail from Boston rather than driving downtown. Many restaurants take no bookings in October.

See the Peabody Essex Museum, one of the oldest US museums. Visit the House of the Seven Gables, the 1668 mansion behind Hawthorne's novel. Walk the wharves of Salem Maritime, the first US National Historic Site. Eat a lobster roll or a bowl of clam chowder. Buy Gibralters, the hard candy first sold in Salem in 1806, from Ye Olde Pepper Companie.

Kyoto, Japan

Best for the Jidai Matsuri procession

At noon on October 22, about 2,000 people in period costume set off on Kyoto's Jidai Matsuri, a walk back through the city's history. The procession is Heian Shrine's grand festival, begun in 1895 and one of Kyoto's three great festivals.

Come for the procession, not the leaves: the maples turn in November. Rain postpones the procession, and Kyoto gets more October rain than any other place here, so keep a day spare after the 22nd.

See Kiyomizu-dera, older than the capital itself, before November's maple crowds. Spend an evening in Gion, the geiko district, and keep Nishiki Market for a wet day. Try yudofu (tofu simmered with kombu) and obanzai, home-style dishes made mostly from Kyoto produce. Buy matcha from Ippodo Tea.

Jaipur, India

Best for Diwali lights in the Pink City

  • Weather: highs 33.7 °C (93 °F), lows 20.3 °C (69 °F); 19 mm (0.8 in) of rain on about one wet day
  • Dates: Dussehra, October 9, 2027; Diwali, October 29
  • Season: shoulder, foreign arrivals 1.01 times an average month for India as a whole

Diwali lights Jaipur on October 29, three weeks after Dussehra on October 9. Jaipur, the Pink City, is named for the color of its old town, and October is dry after the monsoon.

In 2027 Diwali opens a long weekend, with Govardhan Puja and Bhai Duj on the two days after it. Sightsee in the mornings: Jaipur has the highest October temperatures of the 18.

Go early in the day to Amer Fort, 11 km out above Maota Lake. Walk the old city's bazaars to the Hawa Mahal, with its 953 windows. Take a leopard safari at Jhalana, on the city's southeastern edge. Eat dal baati churma and gatte ki sabzi, gram-flour dumplings in curry. Ker sangri, made with desert berries and beans, is Rajasthan's own dish.

Oaxaca, Mexico

Best for the Day of the Dead build-up and mezcal

Late October in Oaxaca is the run-up to the Day of the Dead on November 1 and 2, on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. In 2026 the state's program filled the last week of October and the first days of November with more than 100 events. Oaxaca's colonial center has the ruins of Monte Albán close by.

Arrive in the last days of October, and book your room early. Pack for some rain, since October ends the rainy season.

Visit the church and former monastery of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Stroll the car-free, green-stone Andador Macedonio Alcalá. Take a mezcal tasting in the state that makes about 90% of Mexico's mezcal. Eat a tlayuda, the large crisp tortilla, and a plate of mole negro. If you are brave, try chapulines, toasted grasshoppers.

Mediterranean autumn sun

By October the summer crowds have left the Mediterranean, its sea is still warm from Palermo to Antalya, and inland Fes is past the summer heat.

Palermo, Italy

Best for a warm sea and opened-up palaces

In October, Palermo's Le Vie dei Tesori festival opens churches, palaces and oratories that are usually closed. The Sicilian capital still has beach weather, with a 23.2 °C (74 °F) sea.

If 2027 follows 2026, when the festival ran from mid-September to mid-November, any October week catches it. Pick Palermo over Naxos for the price and the festival, at about $130 a day to Naxos's $251. Expect about nine wet days, the most of the Mediterranean picks.

On a warm day, swim at Mondello, the city's sandy bay. On the others, see the mosaics of the Cappella Palatina, the Norman Palace's royal chapel. Walk the alleys of the Vucciria, Palermo's oldest market. In the evening, see the Teatro Massimo, Italy's largest opera house. Snack on arancine and pane e panelle, chickpea fritters in a roll. Then try sfincione, Palermo's thick pizza.

Naxos, Greece

Best for the driest October on the list

In October, past its summer season, Naxos gets the least rain of the 18 places here and keeps a 22.1 °C (72 °F) sea. The largest and most fertile of the Cyclades has long sandy beaches.

Naxos is the pick for a dry week. Naxos's main archaeological museum is closed for renovation, so you will see a selection of its pieces at a nearby venue.

Watch the sunset at the Portara, the marble doorway of Apollo's temple. Climb Mount Zas, at 1,001 m the highest peak in the Cyclades. Walk the marble-paved alleys of Apeiranthos, a village with four museums. Taste graviera, the island's cow's-milk cheese, with a glass of kitron (the island's citron liqueur).

Menorca, Spain

Best for balmy coves at the season's quiet end

  • Weather: in Mahón, highs 23.7 °C (75 °F), lows 16.8 °C (62 °F); 56 mm (2.2 in) of rain; sea 23.6 °C (74 °F)
  • Season: peak, 1.28 times an average month in the Balearic Islands, but below every month from May to September

Menorca's coves are still warm in October, and the island is quieter than in any summer month. Mahón, the capital, sits on a natural harbor 5 km long.

Pick Menorca over Naxos for warmer water, 23.6 °C (74 °F) to 22.1 °C (72 °F), but expect to pay more: about $329 a day to $251. October counts as peak for the Balearics only because the winter months are nearly empty. Rent a car, since buses thin out after summer.

Start with Mahón cheese, made from cow's milk on the island. Then swim at Cala Macarella, the pine-backed cove on the south coast. Walk the old town of Ciutadella, the former capital. Go back further at Torre d'en Galmés, a Talayotic town settled from about 1400 BC. Buy Xoriguer gin, made from wine alcohol, at the distillery's shop on Mahón's port.

Antalya, Turkey

Best for the warmest Mediterranean sea in October

  • Weather: highs 27.3 °C (81 °F), lows 13.4 °C (56 °F); 104 mm (4.1 in) of rain over about four wet days; sea 25.1 °C (77 °F)
  • Dates: Golden Orange Film Festival, October 24 to 31 in 2026; 2027 dates not yet published

Antalya's sea is still 25.1 °C (77 °F) in October, the warmest of the Mediterranean picks. Late October brings the city's Golden Orange Film Festival. Antalya, nicknamed Turkey's "Capital of Tourism", has the old harbor of Kaleiçi and long beaches.

For swimming, pick Antalya over Palermo and Menorca. You may face heavy, short downpours, since Antalya gets the most October rain of the Mediterranean picks.

Walk the cobbled lanes of Kaleiçi down to the old harbor. See the Düden Waterfalls, where the lower fall drops toward the sea, and swim off Konyaaltı Beach. Order Antalya piyaz, a bean dish dressed with tahini that the city eats as a main course.

Fes, Morocco

Best for a car-free medina between summer and winter

October highs in Fes average 28.3 °C (83 °F), after the summer heat and before the winter damp. The Medina of Fez, where the University of al-Qarawiyyin was founded, is one of the world's largest and oldest car-free urban areas.

Of the places here with a reliable figure, Fes has the lowest daily cost, about $92, so it stretches to a long stay in the medina. Bring a layer for the evenings, which are 13.5 °C (24 °F) cooler than the days.

Order pastilla, the savory pie, which Fes also makes as a dessert called jowhara. Then see the Bou Inania Madrasa, the most important madrasa the Marinids built in Fes, and look down on the dye pits of the Chouara Tannery. End the day with the sunset from the Marinid Tombs above the old city.

Warm escapes and southern spring

October is Maui's quiet season and Cabo's marlin month, and south of the equator Sydney is in mid-spring.

Maui, USA

Best for hot, dry beach days in the quieter season

Maui is in its quiet season in October, with the warmest nights of the 18 places here. Maui is still recovering from the Lahaina fires of August 2023.

Come for hot, dry beach days and a 26.1 °C (79 °F) sea. Maui is the most expensive place on the list, and in October you share it with fewer visitors than in an average month. For the sunrise at Haleakalā, book a reservation ahead.

Drive the Road to Hāna, 59 bridges in about 52 miles. Take the paved walk at ʻĪao Valley to the ʻĪao Needle; non-residents book entry ahead. Snorkel at Molokini, in water clear to 150 feet. Cool off with shave ice. Eat poke and kālua pig, cooked in an underground oven.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Best for marlin tournaments and a warm sea

October is marlin month in Cabo San Lucas, when Bisbee's tournaments bring crowds of spectators to the marina for the weigh-ins. Cabo also has the warmest sea of the 18 places here.

For the warmest swim of the 18, pick Cabo over Maui, with a 28.9 °C (84 °F) sea to Maui's 26.1 °C (79 °F). The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs to November 30, so watch the forecast before you go. The whales do not arrive until winter.

See El Arco at Land's End, the town's landmark, and swim at Lover's Beach. Snorkel at Chileno Bay, with tropical fish and sea turtles. Spend an evening in San José del Cabo, the twin town 32 km up the coast. Order a damiana margarita, popular in Los Cabos, with chocolate clams from the Gulf of California.

Sydney, Australia

Best for spring jacarandas and a coastal sculpture walk

In October, Sculpture by the Sea, Australia's largest annual outdoor sculpture show, lines the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk in Sydney. Sydney is in mid-spring, when its jacarandas flower.

Check the 2027 dates before you plan the coastal walk around the sculptures. With the sea at 19.0 °C (66 °F), Sydney in October is a walking trip more than a swimming one.
