San Francisco's unique foggy microclimates, historic counter-culture neighborhoods like Haight-Ashbury, and iconic landmarks such as Alcatraz set it apart. Los Angeles offers the film industry glamour of Hollywood, expansive urban beaches like Santa Monica, and a distinct diverse culinary scene in Koreatown. A trip focusing solely on Southern California (e.g., LA + San Diego) lacks the distinct historical and geographical character of San Francisco's compact, hilly peninsula and its Pacific Rim cultural influences.

What Travelers Say

A look at Stanley Robert's People Behaving Badly series will give you an inside look of usually petty crime in the city. However, it is very unlikely you'll encounter any violent or petty crime as long as you use your common sense and are vigilant. The areas that one should be most cautious are in the neighborhoods of Bayview-Hunters Point, Visitacion Valley, Sunnydale, Ingleside, and Potrero Hill in Southeast San Francisco, as well as the Tenderloin, parts of Western Addition (including the Fillmore District), and parts of the Mission. San Francisco is still susceptible to violent crime, and most of these murders occur in the southeast, less economically fortunate, neighborhoods of the city. Gang violence touches even busy and thriving areas such as the Mission Street retail corridor, although most instances of violent crime are directed to specific targets and are not random acts. The SoMa district used to be somewhat dangerous; however, gentrification (something that has become fairly common and a social issue in SF) has transformed it into a rather hip and much safer neighborhood with plenty of art galleries and clubs. However, it is best to be careful even now. Do not any leave anything visible in your vehicle, not even small inexpensive items like cellphone mounts, especially when parking on public streets. Car break-ins are very common in San Francisco. You may see posters for the city's public safety campaign featuring the slogan, "Park Smart! If you love it, don’t leave it." Any visible items are an invitation for thieves to smash your windows and ransack your car. During your visit, you will probably see small piles of broken glass on sidewalks throughout the city, which are the result of such crimes. Do not leave electronics such as laptop computers and tablets in your car, not even in the trunk, as thieves carry special detection devices that can sweep for them. If you cannot carry all valuables with you, try to keep them in the trunk and park...

For emergencies in Los Angeles County, dial 911 toll-free from any phone including payphones. Dialing 911 from a cellphone will place you in contact with the California Highway Patrol. Most tourist destinations within the Los Angeles area tend to be fairly safe, including Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Westwood, and West L.A. However, walking at night in some areas of the city (and some suburban cities as well) should be conducted with caution; and depending on the area, in groups. If traveling by car there is little threat of being harassed day or night, provided you avoid driving around neighborhoods with blatant signs of gang activity as mentioned below. Certain areas in or near downtown, such as Skid Row (which is where the Greyhound station is located), Pico-Union, Westlake, Boyle Heights, South Los Angeles, Compton, Inglewood, Harbor Gateway, and Wilmington can be dangerous regardless of the time of day and should be avoided altogether when walking if possible. If traveling in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, the neighborhoods of Pacoima, Panorama City, Van Nuys, North Hills, and Canoga Park are also best avoided on foot. Though cities such as Detroit, St. Louis, and Atlanta have higher reported crime rates per capita than Los Angeles, these numbers can be deceiving. L.A. statistics are skewed because safe neighborhoods such as Bel Air, Pacific Palisades and Westwood help balance the numbers from the very dangerous neighborhoods. If South Los Angeles were counted as its own city, it would have the highest crime and murder rate of any city in America. Neighboring Compton, which is an independent city, ranks as the fourth most dangerous city in America. Luckily for Los Angeles, Compton's statistics are not counted as part of L.A.'s crime data, but the cities border each other. As a general rule, you should exercise great caution if walking in the area roughly bounded by Interstate 10 on the north, Interstate...

:"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." — attributed to Mark Twain }} The best time to visit San Francisco is late September through October, when it is relatively the warmest. All year long, it never gets too cold for winter clothing, and it rarely gets warm enough for shorts and sandals. You will typically need a sweater after sunset, and a windbreaker if you're out by the western part of the peninsula. Prepare to dress in layers to adequately face the microclimates––wind and temperature conditions can change within less than a mile's walk. San Francisco has a mild climate, with cool, wet winters and dry summers. In most months, you can expect the high temperature to be in the upper 50s, 60s or low 70s °F (15-25 °C). However, these mild temperature readings belie a unique climate not shared by other major cities in the state or country. Summer days usually start out under fog, slowly burning off towards the ocean into a sunny albeit windy afternoon. Measurable precipitation during the summer months is rare, although light drizzle is possible. Humidity is very constant, but rarely uncomfortable. At late afternoon, when the fog and wind returns people generally find themselves needing a jacket (and this is summer!). There are some days when the fog lingers all day. Daylight lasts from 6AM to 8:30PM. In the winter, the rainy season is in full swing. That being said, the chances for a calm, windless, sunny day are actually higher in the winter than in the summer! However, the overall temperatures are going to be lower in the winter. There have long been one-week warm spells in February. In the last couple years (2021-2022), these have gotten longer, lasting through February and even into January. The sun is only up from 7:15AM to 5PM. Spring and fall are not so much seasons in themselves in San Francisco, but rather they are quick transitional periods with some days resembling summer and others the winter. Fall in particular is a good...

The city enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate most of the year. However, the climate of Southern California is somewhat complex and temperatures can fluctuate wildly depending where you are in the city, since the varied terrain results in a series of microclimates. On the same day, daytime highs can vary by as much as twenty degrees Fahrenheit between coastal locations and cities in the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys. The coast tends to stay a bit cooler, which helps with the summer heat, but as such is also chillier at night. Bring a sweater and pants if you stay for dinner near the coast, even in the summer. Summers are warm, occasionally hot, and bring the infamous dirty smog, though the air quality has significantly improved over the years. In August and September, the hottest months, average daytime highs in Downtown Los Angeles are 83°F (28°C) and nighttime lows average 63°F (17°C). Winters are mild and bring much of the annual rainfall; between December and March average daytime highs are 68°F (20°C) and nighttime lows are 49°F (9°C). Spring is a mix of gloomy rainy days and warm sunny days; like the rest of Southern California, L.A. experiences the "May Gray" and "June Gloom" marine effect, which results in frequent fog and overcast skies along the coast, so don't expect sunny beach weather if you visit during these months. Fall is typically warm and dry, with frequent wildfires. Ocean temperatures along the L.A. coast vary from an average of 58°F (14°C) in January to 68°F (20°C) in August. Santa Ana winds can occur at any time of the year, although they most commonly occur in the fall and winter. These winds are a reversal of the usual climate conditions, when hot, dry air blows from the desert to the coast. Milder Santa Ana winds can result in excellent dry air conditions, but powerful ones can last days on end, significantly raising temperatures, creating tremendous fire danger, and in general making life...

San Francisco prides itself on its openness to diversity in race, gender, sexual orientation and personal style. This trait is widely considered to be one of the defining features of the city, and it draws both visitors and transplants alike. Tobacco smokers beware: as in the rest of California, smoking is illegal in bars, restaurants, and other public places. Additionally, the City of San Francisco has a local ordinance that require smokers to go all the way to the curb (or if there is no curb, at least 25 feet from any building - not simply the entrances). Bay Area people can be particularly vocal about personal habits, so take care and be mindful and respectful of others when smoking, even in places where it is allowed. On the other hand, smoking marijuana is remarkably well-tolerated. While still illegal under federal law, California law allows for the possession, use, and cultivation of small amounts of marijuana for adults 21 and over. Using marijuana in public is illegal, but this rarely enforced. You shouldn't smoke marijuana just anywhere, and the rules of etiquette are difficult to navigate. You might find people smoking marijuana at large concerts, but not small concerts, or people smoking marijuana on a street corner in the middle of the day in some neighborhoods (e.g., Haight-Ashbury) but frowned upon in others (e.g., the Financial District). Public nudity has been celebrated among some residents. However, this has not been without controversy, and there is now a law banning some public nudity, with nudists actively opposing the law. It's worth mentioning that natives tend to dislike many of the nicknames given to their city. Instead of saying "San Fran", "Frisco", or "SFO", most refer to San Francisco by its full name or just "The City". The Bay Area has of one of the most vibrant high-tech startup scenes in the world. While the venture capital firms are largely in the South Bay, many of the small startups and tech...

Both San Francisco and Los Angeles are expensive across the board; decent hotels easily run $150-250+/night. To meet your $60/night accommodation budget, focus on hostels or private rooms in shared Airbnbs, and plan on supermarket deli meals or food trucks for some meals to keep costs below $20 per meal.

💸
Saving

Maximize public transit for your $150 transport budget. In San Francisco, purchase a 3-day Muni Pass for $31, covering unlimited rides on buses, streetcars, and cable cars. In Los Angeles, use a TAP card ($2) and load a 1-Day Pass ($7) for heavy travel days. For inter-city travel between SF and LA, explore Flixbus for fares around $25-40 if booked in advance.

💸
Saving

Leverage the many free attractions in both cities, such as walking across the Golden Gate Bridge or exploring Venice Beach. Additionally, many museums like The Getty Center (LA) offer free admission (parking extra), while others in SF often have free days; check schedules to save $15-25 per entry fee.

Splurge

Book Alcatraz Island tickets ($42) well in advance, as they sell out weeks ahead. It's a unique historical and cultural experience offering stunning bay views, making it an essential splurge for a cultural trip to San Francisco.

💡
Practical

To consistently meet your $20/meal food budget, utilize local supermarkets like Trader Joe's or Safeway for breakfast, snacks, and picnic lunches. Consider food trucks in areas like the Mission District (SF) or Koreatown (LA) for delicious, authentic meals typically under $15.

This trip prioritizes the distinct urban energies and coastal diversity of Northern and Southern California, showcasing San Francisco's historic districts and Los Angeles' entertainment and beach scene. You'll miss the scenic drama of a Highway 1 road trip, with its winding cliffside vistas and charming seaside towns like Big Sur, instead opting for a quick flight. This also means skipping the towering granite formations and giant sequoia groves of Yosemite National Park, a completely different California experience, along with the relaxed charm of San Diego's Balboa Park and Gaslamp Quarter.

Extend by 2-3 days to transform the inter-city travel into a Highway 1 road trip, allowing you to drive the dramatic Pacific Coast Highway. This adds stunning cliffside views, stops in quaint coastal towns like Carmel-by-the-Sea, and the chance to spot elephant seals at Piedras Blancas, turning transit into a memorable part of the journey rather than just a connection. This itinerary follows a packed pace (5-6 activities per day).

Day 1 and the last day are lighter to account for arrival and departure. Want a different pace? Create a custom version with your preferences.

Good to Know

CustomsTravelers can bring most goods for personal use duty-free, but check specific limits for alcohol (typically 1 liter) and tobacco. Agricultural products, including certain foods, may have restrictions; declare all food items.
Tax refundThe United States does not offer a nationwide VAT or sales tax refund program for international tourists; sales tax is applied at the point of purchase.
PaymentCredit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout San Francisco, even for small purchases. Cash is less common but still accepted, especially by smaller vendors at markets or food trucks.
BargainingBargaining is not customary in retail stores, boutiques, or major markets; prices are fixed and displayed as marked. Exceptions might include some flea markets or antique fairs, where polite negotiation on higher-priced items might be accepted.
  • In San Francisco, always dress in layers; the city's microclimates mean temperatures can drop by 10-15°F in minutes when fog rolls in, especially near the waterfront or Alcatraz.
  • For San Francisco public transport, load the Clipper Card onto your phone's wallet or purchase a physical card at any BART station — it's valid for BART, Muni buses, and streetcars.
  • When driving in San Francisco, research parking in advance using apps like SpotHero; street parking is scarce, expensive, and subject to strict street cleaning or permit restrictions.
  • In Los Angeles, a rental car is highly recommended for efficient sightseeing due to the city's vast, spread-out nature and limited public transit options between many major attractions.
  • Utilize ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft in Los Angeles; they are often more efficient and convenient than public transit for covering long distances between neighborhoods.
  • When visiting popular Los Angeles beaches like Santa Monica or Venice, arrive early (before 10 AM) for easier parking and to avoid peak crowds.
  • Always check Google Maps 'transit' option for real-time bus and rail schedules in both cities; local public transport can be complex for first-timers.
  • For iconic San Francisco attractions like Alcatraz or cable car rides, book tickets online several weeks or even months in advance, especially during peak season, as they sell out quickly.
  • 1
Layers of clothing (San Francisco's microclimates)

Visa & Entry Requirements

Travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries (e.g., EU, UK, Australia, New Zealand) can enter the United States for up to 90 days visa-free with an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), which must be obtained online prior to departure. Indian citizens typically require a B-2 tourist visa, applied for at a US embassy or consulate. All visitors must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay.

Local Customs & Etiquette

In California, an open, casual demeanor is common; expect direct but generally friendly interactions. When engaging in discussions about visible social challenges, such as homelessness in both cities, maintain an empathetic and non-judgmental tone. Be aware that Northern and Southern California have distinct regional identities, which can influence local attitudes and customs. At restaurants, when ready to pay, often you'll need to signal your server for the check; they typically don't bring it automatically.

Safety Overview

While generally safe, travelers in San Francisco should be wary of aggressive panhandling and petty crime, particularly in high-traffic tourist areas or places like the Haight. In Los Angeles, exercise extra caution in the Oakwood neighborhood of Venice, known for historical gang and drug activity. Always secure valuables, especially in crowded spots, and be aware that vehicle break-ins can occur if items are left visible. For any emergency in Los Angeles County or San Francisco, dial 911 immediately.

Travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries (e.g., EU, UK, Australia) can enter for up to 90 days with an approved ESTA. Indian citizens typically require a B-2 tourist visa, applied for at a US embassy or consulate. All visitors need a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay.

From LAX, take the free 'LAXit' shuttle to the LAX Transit Center, then transfer to the Metro C Line (Green) or K Line (Crenshaw) or various bus services. Ride-share services (Uber/Lyft) pick up from designated zones at LAXit. Taxis are also available from the LAXit lot.

From SFO, the fastest option is BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), which departs directly from the International Terminal and connects to downtown SF stations like Powell Street or Embarcadero in about 30 minutes. Taxis and ride-share services are also available from designated zones.

Navigating Los Angeles without a car can be challenging due to its vast, spread-out nature and limited public transit coverage for all attractions. While Metro Rail and bus lines serve some areas, ride-sharing (Uber/Lyft) is often necessary for efficiency, making a car rental highly recommended for broader exploration.

The best time for both cities is generally spring (April-May) or fall (September-October) for pleasant weather and fewer crowds. San Francisco is coolest and foggier in summer (June-August) with average highs of 65°F (18°C), while Los Angeles is warmest and sunniest, reaching 85°F (29°C) or higher.

While San Francisco is generally safe, tourists should be vigilant in certain areas, especially regarding petty crime and aggressive panhandling in places like the Haight. Always secure valuables and be aware of your surroundings, particularly after dark or in less crowded areas. In emergencies, dial 911.

Tipping is customary in California for most service industries. For restaurants, a 15-20% tip on the total bill (before tax) is standard for good service. For taxi drivers, 10-15% is typical, and for hotel housekeepers, $2-5 per night is appreciated. Bartenders usually expect $1-2 per drink.

The currency used in both San Francisco and Los Angeles, as throughout the United States, is the United States Dollar (USD). Major credit cards are widely accepted everywhere, but it's useful to carry some cash for smaller purchases or street vendors.
