10-day United States trip — San Francisco to Yosemite National Park to Yosemite to Los Angeles. Day-by-day route, attractions & food.

Part one

Is this trip for you?

San Francisco + Yosemite + Los Angeles over San Francisco + Los Angeles + San Diego: This itinerary offers the iconic natural grandeur of Yosemite National Park, with its towering granite cliffs and ancient sequoia groves, a character unmatched by coastal Southern California's beaches. While San Diego's family-friendly beaches and zoo are excellent, Los Angeles also provides a strong beach scene at Santa Monica and Venice, plus the modern entertainment of Hollywood that San Diego lacks in scope. This combination delivers both the dramatic wilderness and the diverse urban experiences unique to California.

📅 Best Time to Visit

California's diverse geography means 'best time' varies. Generally, Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October) offer mild temperatures (15-25°C) and fewer crowds across coastal cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. For Yosemite National Park, late Spring to early Fall (May-October) is ideal for hiking, with temperatures ranging from 10-30°C, though summer brings the largest crowds and hottest days in lower elevations. Winter (November-March) is mild on the coast (10-18°C) but brings snow and road closures to Yosemite, making it a distinct experience for snow activities.

Part two

The plan, day by day

10-day trip

3dSan Francisco1dYosemite National Park1dYosemite5dLos Angeles

This itinerary masterfully covers the iconic cityscapes of San Francisco, the natural grandeur of Yosemite, and the diverse districts of Los Angeles, offering a comprehensive overview of California's major attractions. However, the compressed schedule means passing over the vibrant desert landscape and art scene of Palm Springs, with its mid-century modern architecture. Additionally, the historic gold rush towns of the Sierra foothills, such as Columbia State Historic Park, which offer a glimpse into California's past, are not included.

Travelers also miss the serene coastal charm and marine wildlife viewing opportunities around Monterey Bay and Carmel-by-the-Sea. To deepen the immersion in California's natural beauty and history, consider extending the trip by two days to visit the Redwood National and State Parks in Northern California. This would allow for walks among ancient towering trees and experiencing the raw, untamed beauty of the Pacific coastline.

Alternatively, for a unique desert experience, add two days for Palm Springs to explore its distinctive mid-century modern architecture and surrounding desert hiking trails. This itinerary follows a comfortable pace (3-4 activities per day). Day 1 and the last day are lighter to account for arrival and departure.

Good to Know

Meal timesBreakfast is typically served from 7-10 AM, lunch from 12-2 PM, and dinner from 6-9 PM. Many restaurants in popular areas offer continuous service, but some smaller establishments might have a break between lunch and dinner.
TippingTipping is customary and expected. For table service, 15% is standard, 18-20% for good service. For quick-service or cafes, a tip jar is often available, and leaving a dollar or rounding up is common. Bartenders usually receive $1-2 per drink.
WaterTap water is generally safe to drink throughout Yosemite National Park and surrounding towns. Refillable water bottles are encouraged. Avoid drinking untreated water from streams or lakes without proper filtration.
VegetarianVegetarian options are widely available, especially in lodges and casual diners offering chili, veggie burgers, or salads. Vegans may find choices more limited outside of packing their own supplies; inquire about ingredients for plant-based alternatives. Gluten-free options are increasingly common, but always confirm with staff.
PaymentCredit and debit cards are widely accepted at most lodges, stores, and restaurants within the park and in surrounding towns. Cash is useful for smaller purchases or if card readers are temporarily down in remote areas.
EtiquetteDining in San Diego is generally casual. Tipping is standard (15-20% for good service). At informal taco shops, you order at the counter, and you'll often see self-serve salsa bars. Feel free to use your hands for tacos and burritos.

Part four

Costs & booking

  • Total for family of 4 — 10 days mid-range trip, excludes international flights

💡
Practical

California's major cities and popular areas are generally expensive; your $100/night accommodation budget for a family of four will be particularly challenging, as mid-range hotels often start at $150-250/night. While casual sit-down meals can cost $15-25 per person, substantial savings come from utilizing grocery stores like Safeway or Ralphs for deli meals and picnic supplies, typically $8-12 per person. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere.

💸
Saving

Parking in San Francisco and popular beach areas in LA/SD can be exorbitant, often $30-60/day. Utilize hotel parking if included, or use apps like SpotHero or Parkopedia to find cheaper garages and lots, especially for overnight stays in city centers.

💸
Saving

To stretch your $90/day food budget for four people, prioritize breakfast at your accommodation, pack lunches from grocery stores (Safeway, Ralphs, Vons), and choose casual eateries or food trucks for dinner. Aim for one sit-down meal per day, keeping it under $50 for the family.

Splurge

Consider a half-day surf lesson in Southern California (e.g., Santa Monica or La Jolla) for approximately $70-100 per person. This is a memorable family experience aligned with your 'beach' focus and budget.

Before you go

Route Overview

Car-centric; NYC, Chicago, DC, and SF have good transit

Common Modes
SubwayBusAmtrakCommuter rail
Ride-Hailing Apps
UberLyft
Transit Card

City-specific (MetroCard in NYC, Clipper in SF, etc.)

Pro Tip

Public transit varies hugely by city. Uber/Lyft work nationwide.

  • In San Francisco, calls to landlines within the city require dialing 1+area code (415 or 628)+number; mobile phones often automatically manage this.
  • For emergencies in Yosemite National Park, dial 911 and immediately state 'I am in Yosemite' to ensure you are connected to the park's dedicated emergency dispatch.
  • When dialing 911 from a cell phone in Los Angeles County, you may first connect with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) before being transferred to local authorities, so be clear about your location.
  • Always include the area code (619, 858, or 760) when making calls within the San Diego metropolitan area, even to local numbers.
  • Pre-book accommodations in Yosemite National Park 6-12 months in advance, especially for summer and fall, as lodging within the park sells out quickly.
  • Use public transportation (BART, Muni in SF; Metro in LA; MTS in SD) for city travel to avoid traffic and parking, and purchase a Clipper Card (SF) or TAP Card (LA) for easier access.
  • Carry a portable power bank, as heavy use of your smartphone for navigation (Google Maps) and mobile tickets will drain your battery quickly, especially in areas with limited charging points.
  • When visiting federal lands like Fort Mason or the Presidio in San Francisco, be aware that law enforcement is handled by federal park rangers, not the San Francisco Police Department.
  • 1
Layered clothing (San Francisco's microclimates, 4-season-in-a-day)
  • 2
Comfortable hiking boots (Yosemite trails, varied terrain)
  • 3
Sunscreen SPF 30+ (Southern California sun, high altitude in Yosemite)
  • 4
Wide-brimmed hat (sun protection for hiking and city exploration)
  • 5
Reusable water bottle (California's tap water is excellent and accessible)
  • 6
Small backpack/daypack (for daily essentials and layers)
  • 7
Swimsuit (Southern California beaches, hotel pools)
  • 8
Light jacket or fleece (evenings in coastal cities can be cool)
  • 9
Portable charger (for heavy phone usage for navigation/photos)
  • 10
Warm hat/gloves (Yosemite, especially outside summer months)
  • 11
    Child-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+)
  • 12
Snacks & water bottles for the kids
  • 13
Small activity bag (crayons, sticker book, mini puzzles)
  • 14
    Motion sickness tablets (age-appropriate)
  • 15
Compact first-aid kit with kids plasters
  • 16
    Kids' camera or disposable camera
  • 17
    Headphones (for flights/trains)
  • 18
    Portable power bank

Note: Travel conditions, regulations, and local customs may change. We recommend verifying essential details — such as visa requirements, emergency contacts, and payment options — closer to your travel date.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most foreign visitors to the United States require a visa or an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) if eligible under the Visa Waiver Program. Citizens of US/EU/UK/Australia/New Zealand typically qualify for visa-free entry via ESTA for stays up to 90 days. Indian citizens generally require a B-1/B-2 visitor visa. All travelers must possess a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended period of stay. Check official travel.state.gov guidelines for specific nationality requirements.

Most international travelers to the United States require either a visa or an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) if they are eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. Citizens from countries like the US, EU, UK, Australia, and Canada can generally apply for an ESTA for stays up to 90 days. Travelers from other nations, such as India, typically need to apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa. All visitors must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended departure date.

California's major cities and national parks are generally safe for solo female travelers. San Diego is particularly noted for its safety. In San Francisco and Los Angeles, tourist areas are well-policed. It's always wise to exercise caution in less populated areas or at night, and avoid walking alone in specific neighborhoods known for higher property crime, such as Southeast San Diego or Barrio Logan. Public transportation in major cities is safe, especially during the day.

Tipping is an integral part of service culture in California. For sit-down restaurants, a tip of 15-20% of the bill is standard for good service. For taxi and rideshare drivers, 15-20% is also customary. Hotel bellhops usually receive $1-2 per bag, and housekeepers a few dollars per night. It's rare for gratuity to be automatically added to the bill unless you are a large group, so always check.

Due to California's diverse climate, packing layers is essential, especially for San Francisco where weather can change rapidly. For Yosemite and other outdoor activities, waterproof hiking boots and durable outerwear are highly recommended. Sunscreen and a hat are crucial for Southern California's intense sun. A reusable water bottle is useful, as California's tap water is excellent. A portable power bank for your phone is also key, given reliance on apps for navigation and transport.

For a trip covering coastal cities and Yosemite, the shoulder seasons of Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October) are generally ideal. During these months, coastal areas experience mild temperatures (15-25°C) with fewer crowds, and Yosemite is accessible with pleasant weather for hiking (10-30°C in valleys, cooler at higher elevations). Summer brings peak crowds and can be very hot in Southern California and Yosemite's lower elevations, while winter offers unique snowy landscapes in Yosemite but can limit access.

In San Francisco, BART and Muni offer extensive public transport. Los Angeles has the Metro rail and bus system, while San Diego relies on MTS buses and trolleys. For cities, using ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft is also very convenient. However, for Yosemite National Park and exploring much of Southern California, a rental car is highly recommended for flexibility and access to remote areas not served by public transit. Parking can be challenging and expensive in urban centers.

From San Francisco International Airport (SFO), BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is the most efficient option, connecting directly to downtown SF. From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the LAXit shuttle connects to the Metro C Line (Green) or you can use ride-sharing services. From San Diego International Airport (SAN), the 'Route 992' bus connects to downtown San Diego and the Santa Fe Depot train station, or taxis/rideshares are readily available. Rental cars are available at all airports.

California is remarkably diverse, and there are notable cultural differences between Northern and Southern California, as well as between urban and rural areas. While generally informal, being mindful of varying communication styles and local etiquette, such as waiting your turn and respecting personal space, is appreciated. Service expectations vary, but overall, a friendly and direct approach is common. Be aware that sensitive topics are best avoided in casual conversation, especially if you are unfamiliar with local nuances.
