Los Angeles offers an unparalleled cultural span in a single city, blending iconic Hollywood glamor, diverse culinary scenes from Koreatown to Grand Central Market, and a unique beach culture along Santa Monica and Venice. Unlike a trip focused solely on a major historical East Coast city like Boston or Washington D.C., LA provides both a modern art experience at The Broad and world-class live entertainment venues, alongside its vast, sun-drenched coastal landscapes that distinguish it from other US metropolises.

📅 Best Time to Visit

Los Angeles is pleasant year-round, with mild winters and warm, dry summers. Spring (March-May) and Fall (September-November) are ideal, offering comfortable temperatures (18-25°C) and fewer crowds, perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Summers (June-August) are warm (25-30°C+) but can be crowded, especially at beaches and theme parks, with occasional heatwaves. Winters (December-February) are mild (10-18°C) and often sunny, making it a great escape from colder climates elsewhere, as noted for January birthdays; crowds are generally lower, except around holidays.

What Travelers Say

For emergencies in Los Angeles County, dial 911 toll-free from any phone including payphones. Dialing 911 from a cellphone will place you in contact with the California Highway Patrol. Most tourist destinations within the Los Angeles area tend to be fairly safe, including Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Westwood, and West L.A. However, walking at night in some areas of the city (and some suburban cities as well) should be conducted with caution; and depending on the area, in groups. If traveling by car there is little threat of being harassed day or night, provided you avoid driving around neighborhoods with blatant signs of gang activity as mentioned below. Certain areas in or near downtown, such as Skid Row (which is where the Greyhound station is located), Pico-Union, Westlake, Boyle Heights, South Los Angeles, Compton, Inglewood, Harbor Gateway, and Wilmington can be dangerous regardless of the time of day and should be avoided altogether when walking if possible. If traveling in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, the neighborhoods of Pacoima, Panorama City, Van Nuys, North Hills, and Canoga Park are also best avoided on foot. Though cities such as Detroit, St. Louis, and Atlanta have higher reported crime rates per capita than Los Angeles, these numbers can be deceiving. L.A. statistics are skewed because safe neighborhoods such as Bel Air, Pacific Palisades and Westwood help balance the numbers from the very dangerous neighborhoods. If South Los Angeles were counted as its own city, it would have the highest crime and murder rate of any city in America. Neighboring Compton, which is an independent city, ranks as the fourth most dangerous city in America. Luckily for Los Angeles, Compton's statistics are not counted as part of L.A.'s crime data, but the cities border each other. As a general rule, you should exercise great caution if walking in the area roughly bounded by Interstate 10 on the north, Interstate...

*Crime can be high in certain parts of Southern California, particularly in parts of the Los Angeles area or parts of the Inland Empire area; however, the media tends to exaggerate this sometimes. Many areas are extremely good and safe, and Los Angeles, being a large diverse city, has many affluent, and middle-class areas, as well as struggling neighborhoods. *Some tourists may suffer respiratory problems due to the pollution in the air closer to Southern California's major metropolitan areas. Drink plenty of fluids and keep outdoors activities within the city to a minimum. *There are some animals you may want to be aware of in Southern California. There are rattlesnakes in the open spaces. It's not likely you will run into one, but if you do, they typically will not bother you if you don't bother them. Even so, it's best to always be alert while hiking. Mountain lions (also known as pumas, cougars, and catamounts) exist in National Parks and open spaces in Southern California. These cats are, however, shy and elusive. Although it has happened, you have very little chance of being attacked by one, let alone seeing one. Most hikers who have been hiking these areas their whole lives have never seen a mountain lion, but attacks do happen every few years or so. Make sure to always hike with another person, especially near dawn and dusk. Coyotes are common, but elusive, throughout Southern California mountains, even in relatively populated areas such as the Hollywood Hills. They pose little threat to humans but they will attack dogs and other domestic animals - if you have animals with you, be sure they are under your control and close by. *Bears are in the mountains of Southern California and they have been known to wander into the neighborhoods of SoCal cities, mainly the cities that border the vast mountains. It's not very common, but one should be on the lookout, again if walking at dawn or dusk, especially in the cities that border the...

A trip to a Disney park can be overwhelming for most people - it is more so for very young kids or people of any age who are neurodiverse. Though the urge to do everything in one day will be strong, resist it! Pace yourself, drink plenty of water, and take regular breaks. Most important of all, be prepared! Plan your day in advance as much as possible, though don't forget to leave time to wonder and relax, and be flexible: rides can go down without warning, or something else might interrupt your day, such as bad weather. As mentioned earlier on this page, fireworks in Disneyland, unlike in other parks around the world, are not a nightly occurrence. They mainly take place on weekends, with daily use reserved for the busiest times of the year. One reason for this due to the large number of people who live near the resort and don't want to be disturbed by pyro every single night - this is also why shows tend to be shorter than at Magic Kingdom in Florida. If you do show up on a night where fireworks are scheduled to take place, beware they may be cancelled due to high winds - California is highly vulnerable to wildfires, something both Disney and the state take very seriously. Thought it may not be windy on Main Street, winds can be moving fast at altitude. You will be told if fireworks have been cancelled before the show begins. Don't be frustrated: every nighttime show is designed to work fine without them. If you or someone in your party needs to stop and unwind, do not be afraid to leave the park and spend some time at your hotel, either lounging in the pool or napping in your room. This is very easy to do here, as all three on-site hotels are within a few minutes walk of the parks. Pixar Place hotel guests with park tickets can take advantage of a hidden connection between DCA and the hotel. One tactic seasoned guests use is "rope-dropping" the parks in the morning, taking a break around mid-afternoon, then returning for another round in the evening. This...

Southern California is famous for the movie industry around LA, and if you explore a bit you are bound to find "exotic" locales from many a movie that were filmed in Southern California due to the proximity. As sets within the studio zone within of central Los Angeles do not entitle compensation for travel expenses, they are used to represent locations all around the world. The amount of freeways and highways is immense, and Southern Californians stereotypically spend most of their time when they meet each other talking about how horrible the traffic getting there was and how horrible the traffic getting back will be. Despite that its world class cities and suburbs continue to attract a wide variety of people from all over the country and abroad to live and vacation due to the pleasant climate and diverse landscapes with many natural and cultural attractions just a short (depending on congestion) drive away. Even though you can swim in the Pacific its cold currents make it somewhat less pleasant than you might think.

Wikivoyage: Southern California · Wikivoyage

The city enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate most of the year. However, the climate of Southern California is somewhat complex and temperatures can fluctuate wildly depending where you are in the city, since the varied terrain results in a series of microclimates. On the same day, daytime highs can vary by as much as twenty degrees Fahrenheit between coastal locations and cities in the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys. The coast tends to stay a bit cooler, which helps with the summer heat, but as such is also chillier at night. Bring a sweater and pants if you stay for dinner near the coast, even in the summer. Summers are warm, occasionally hot, and bring the infamous dirty smog, though the air quality has significantly improved over the years. In August and September, the hottest months, average daytime highs in Downtown Los Angeles are 83°F (28°C) and nighttime lows average 63°F (17°C). Winters are mild and bring much of the annual rainfall; between December and March average daytime highs are 68°F (20°C) and nighttime lows are 49°F (9°C). Spring is a mix of gloomy rainy days and warm sunny days; like the rest of Southern California, L.A. experiences the "May Gray" and "June Gloom" marine effect, which results in frequent fog and overcast skies along the coast, so don't expect sunny beach weather if you visit during these months. Fall is typically warm and dry, with frequent wildfires. Ocean temperatures along the L.A. coast vary from an average of 58°F (14°C) in January to 68°F (20°C) in August. Santa Ana winds can occur at any time of the year, although they most commonly occur in the fall and winter. These winds are a reversal of the usual climate conditions, when hot, dry air blows from the desert to the coast. Milder Santa Ana winds can result in excellent dry air conditions, but powerful ones can last days on end, significantly raising temperatures, creating tremendous fire danger, and in general making life...

Practical

Los Angeles is moderate overall, with mid-range hotels costing $100-150/night and casual sit-down meals around $15-25 per person, but getting around without a car can add up quickly.

💸
Saving

Utilize the LA Metro TAP card for exploring specific areas like Downtown or getting between Santa Monica and Venice Beach; a 1-day pass costs only $3.50, significantly cheaper than multiple rideshares.

💸
Saving

Embrace LA's diverse and affordable street food, especially taco trucks where a satisfying meal can be had for $8-12 per person, perfect for a picnic on the beach to save on sit-down lunch costs.

Splurge

Consider a two-hour beginner surf lesson in Santa Monica or Malibu for around $70-100 per person; it's a quintessential California beach experience that offers great value for a memorable activity.

💡
Practical

While staying directly beach-front can be pricier, look for hotels within a 15-20 minute walk of Santa Monica or Venice Beach for around $120-150/night; this cuts down on daily transport costs to the shore and maximizes your beach time.

This itinerary prioritizes a packed exploration of Los Angeles, blending iconic Hollywood experiences, diverse culinary adventures, and a taste of its famous beach culture. This compressed 5-day trip means skipping deeper dives into niche areas like the sprawling Getty Villa's Roman and Greek antiquities overlooking the Pacific, or the full immersion into nature at Griffith Park's extensive hiking trails beyond a quick visit. Also missed is the chance to fully experience the expansive art collections at LACMA, only allowing for a glimpse of its outdoor installations rather than a leisurely stroll through its galleries.

Add 2-3 days to explore the northern beaches and canyon roads, extending your coastal experience to Malibu for its stunning tide pools at El Matador State Beach and hiking the scenic trails of Point Dume, offering dramatic cliffside ocean views. This allows for a more relaxed pace to soak in Southern California's natural beauty beyond the immediate urban sprawl and discover hidden coves.

PaymentCredit and debit cards are widely accepted at most establishments, from food trucks to fine dining. Cash is useful for very small purchases or some older, independent spots, but card is generally preferred.
EtiquetteCasual dining is the norm in LA. Tipping is expected for table service and delivery. It's common to share dishes, especially at places like Korean BBQ. Asking for a 'to-go box' (doggy bag) for leftovers is standard.

Los Angeles shopping is less about traditional markets and more about specialized districts, high-end boutiques, and unique vintage finds that reflect the city's diverse subcultures and creative industries. • Rent a car for true flexibility in Los Angeles; public transit is improving but doesn't efficiently connect all major attractions, and distances are vast.
  • Utilize Google Maps for general navigation and Waze for real-time traffic avoidance on LA's notoriously congested freeways like the 405, 10, and 101.
  • Book major studio tours, like Warner Bros. Studio Tour or Paramount Pictures Studio Tour, several weeks in advance online, as popular time slots sell out quickly.
  • For popular spots like Griffith Observatory, arrive before 9 AM on weekends or take the DASH Observatory shuttle from Vermont/Sunset Metro station to avoid severe parking challenges.
  • Explore Koreatown (K-Town) for its numerous 24-hour restaurants and spas; many excellent K-BBQ establishments, such as Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong, are walk-in only but worth the wait.
  • Consider purchasing a Go City Explorer Pass if planning to visit multiple paid attractions like Universal Studios Hollywood, Madame Tussauds, or the Hollywood Sign Tour for potential cost savings.
  • When visiting beaches like Santa Monica or Malibu, aim for early mornings (before 10 AM) or late afternoons (after 4 PM) on weekends to find parking more easily.

Note: Travel conditions, regulations, and local customs may change. We recommend verifying essential details — such as visa requirements, emergency contacts, and payment options — closer to your travel date.

Visa & Entry Requirements

US and Canadian citizens do not need a visa. UK, EU, Australian, New Zealand, Japanese, South Korean, and many other citizens are eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), allowing stays up to 90 days with an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) obtained online at least 72 hours before travel. Indian citizens typically require a B-1 (business) or B-2 (tourism) visa, applied for at a US embassy or consulate. All travelers need a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended period of stay.

Local Customs & Etiquette

Personal space is generally larger in Los Angeles than in many other countries; avoid standing too close during conversations. Direct communication is common and valued; straightforwardness is preferred over indirect language. While LA is casual, punctuality is expected for formal appointments, though 'LA time' might apply to more relaxed social gatherings. Traffic congestion is a significant part of daily life, so patience on the roads is essential, and aggressive driving is common on freeways.

Safety Overview

While most tourist destinations within Los Angeles County, such as Pasadena, are generally very safe, specific areas require increased vigilance. Venice's Oakwood neighborhood (south of Rose Avenue, west of Abbot Kinney Street) has a history of gang and drug activity. Similarly, parts of South Los Angeles and Gateway Cities, especially Compton, are prone to gang violence and can be dangerous to walk alone in, even during the daytime. Dial 911 for all emergencies, and note that dialing from a cellphone will connect you to the California Highway Patrol.

US and Canadian citizens do not require a visa. Travelers from most Western European countries, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan can visit for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program by obtaining an approved ESTA online prior to travel. Citizens of other countries, including India, typically need to apply for a B1/B2 tourist visa through a US embassy or consulate. Always check your specific country's requirements.

Los Angeles is generally safe for solo female travelers, particularly in well-known tourist areas like Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills. Public transit is generally safe during the day, but ride-sharing apps (Uber/Lyft) are recommended at night. Certain areas, like parts of Venice's Oakwood neighborhood or South Los Angeles, should be approached with caution or avoided, especially when alone.

Renting a car offers the most flexibility for exploring Los Angeles due to its vast size and spread-out attractions, though be prepared for significant traffic and parking costs. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are widely available and popular. The Metro rail and bus system serves key areas like Downtown, Hollywood, and Santa Monica, and is a viable option for specific routes.

Tipping is a mandatory part of service industry compensation in Los Angeles. Plan to tip 15-20% at sit-down restaurants. For taxi drivers, 15-20% is customary. Hotel bellhops typically receive $2-5 per bag, and housekeepers $2-5 per day. Smaller tips for coffee shop baristas ($1-2) are also common.

Pack layers as temperatures can vary significantly between morning, midday, and evening, even on sunny days. Include comfortable walking shoes, a swimsuit, and a light jacket or hoodie for cooler evenings. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential year-round due to consistent sun exposure. A wide-brimmed hat is also recommended for outdoor activities.

The ideal times to visit Los Angeles are during the spring (March-May) and fall (September-November). These seasons offer mild temperatures, generally fewer crowds, and pleasant conditions for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Summers are warm and busy, while winters are mild and sunnier than many other destinations, with fewer tourists outside of holiday periods.

From LAX, you can take a shuttle to the LAX-it lot for ride-sharing (Uber/Lyft) pickups, which is the most convenient door-to-door option. The FlyAway bus service offers direct routes to Hollywood, Downtown LA, and Van Nuys. For public transit, take the free 'LAX-i' shuttle to the 'LAX City Bus Center' or 'Aviation/LAX Metro Rail Station' to connect to the Metro system. Taxis are also available from designated ranks.

Angelenos generally appreciate direct communication and have a larger personal space bubble than in some other cultures. While casualness is common, punctuality for appointments is expected. Be mindful that traffic is a constant factor in daily life, so allow ample travel time for appointments. Tipping for service is customary across various industries (restaurants, taxis, hotels).
