Cities
Hanoi (5d), Hoi An (3d), Ho Chi Minh City (4d)
This trio offers Vietnam's broadest cultural and historical spectrum, from Hanoi's imperial capital and French colonial flair to Hoi An's preserved trading port architecture and HCMC's modern, wartime history. Choosing a northern route like Hanoi + Sapa + Ha Long Bay would entirely miss Hoi An's lantern-lit ancient town and the distinct southern colonial and wartime narratives found in HCMC. Conversely, a purely southern trip (HCMC + Mekong Delta) lacks Hanoi's ancient temples and the central coast's unique blend of Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese architectural heritage.

What Travelers Say
“In general, Ho Chi Minh City is a safe city, with violent crimes such as armed robbery being relatively rare. The most common crimes faced by tourists are pickpocketing and snatch theft from motorbikes. Scam artists operate on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City. A person will strike up a friendly conversation claiming they've either seen you at the airport or some other tourist place where they work. Usually they'll be with other family members who will join the conversation very naturally and once they find out where you're from they'll mention that another family member is moving to a city in your country. You will be invited over for food at their house to help console a worried grandmother or to give advice to their family member. Once you arrive at the house however the family member is not there, or the grandmother has suddenly fallen ill and had to go to the hospital. You'll be presented with various business opportunities, legal or not, or asked for financial support for the suddenly sick grandmother. Hotel scams are very common, even in the mid-range price level US$20-70. The hotel will remind you that you should place your valuables in the room safe or the hotel safe. Lock up everything that is more or less valuable. Don't hold up expensive things near the street or leave them out on the table while you're having a meal, especially in District 1, especially around the backpacker area. Petty theft is a big problem, and a lot of times it's done by people on motorbikes. It's easy to prevent by not giving thieves the opportunity. Don't buy SIM card before the immigration at the airport, they will charge you US$10 for a SIM card. After immigration and baggage area, you can find sim card booth. They sell SIM card for $6 only. Don't buy coconut more than ~USD2, real-price is ~USD0.5. If you are forced, call police: . A favorite trick is for the vendors to strike up a conversation with you, let you hold the carrying-stick, take a picture, and while you're...”

“My favorite shots from my trip around Vietnam :) We traveled around Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Hoi An, it was amazing! We’ve been to many countries, but Vietnam just hits different. The people, the food, the culture, the landscapes,… we loved everything about it :) Our favorite was definitely Hanoi. We were lucky to be there just before the National Day, and the atmosphere was incredible. You really felt like you were part of it, not just a tourist. Hoi An, on the other hand, was very touristy and...”

“Following the fall of Saigon in 1975, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. However the old name Saigon is still widely used by both Vietnamese and foreigners, especially when referring to the most central part of the city to which most tourists flock. Although the capital of a united Vietnam is Hanoi in the north, Ho Chi Minh City remains Vietnam's main economic and financial centre. While it does not have the long history that cities like Hanoi and Hue have, it is Vietnam's most modern and cosmopolitan city, with influences from the French former colonial rulers and the ethnic Chinese community in Cholon deeply embedded in the local culture, perhaps most visible in its cuisine. Though Vietnam has been united since the conclusion of the Vietnam War, cultural differences arising from the division of Vietnam can be seen to this day. To this day, locals in Ho Chi Minh City tend to be more business-minded and less ideological than those in Hanoi in the north. In addition, Southerners also tend to be more hospitable towards Western visitors than Northerners. The Vietnam War — called the "American War" in Vietnam — remains a sensitive topic, and it is advisable not to bring it up in discussions with locals. Do not assume that all Vietnamese think alike, as many Southerners are still bitter about having lost to the North.”

“I will say HCMC is much more tourist friendly and less scary on the roads. With that said, I hear you! I lived in Hanoi for two weeks after making my way up (south-north) and I thought it was way too much! You kinda have to succumb to the chaos and accept the shit show that is Hanoi. I did a beer tour with a local on his bike and it was honestly really cool and did not feel too scammy. He brought me to places that you would never think are bars and we ate snacks and drank beer on those little...”

Cheap overall – budget $40-60/night for comfortable guesthouses and $2-6 for delicious street food meals. Always use bottled water; for street food, choose busy stalls with high turnover.
To stay within your $35/day food budget for two, prioritize street food and local eateries where a full meal often costs $2-5 per person, especially for classics like pho or banh mi.
For inter-city travel between Hanoi, Hoi An (via Da Nang), and HCMC, opt for overnight buses or trains, which typically cost $10-25 per leg and save on a night's accommodation.
While free Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels and cafes, be vigilant in Ho Chi Minh City as snatch theft from motorbikes is common; keep your phone and valuables secure, especially in crowded areas.
Maximize your limited $130 activity budget by focusing on free cultural experiences like exploring Hanoi's Old Quarter, walking Hoi An Ancient Town, and visiting local markets, as many temple entries are under $5.
This itinerary prioritizes the core North-Central-South highlights of Vietnam in a comprehensive 14 days, offering a snapshot of diverse landscapes and history. You forgo deeper exploration of mountainous Sapa, missing its mesmerizing tiered rice terraces and authentic ethnic minority village treks. The serene, karst-filled landscapes of Ninh Binh, often called "Ha Long Bay on land," with Trang An's boat tours through ancient caves, are also omitted.
The packed schedule further skips a multi-day Mekong Delta adventure from Ho Chi Minh City, limiting that experience to a shorter day trip. Extend by 2-3 days for a deeper Mekong Delta exploration from Ho Chi Minh City, allowing for an overnight boat trip through its intricate waterways. This offers a true immersion into the floating markets, local fruit orchards, and traditional coconut candy factories, revealing the vibrant agrarian life of Southern Vietnam beyond a brief day visit.

Good to Know
- Always negotiate tuk-tuk, cyclo, and non-metered taxi fares BEFORE getting in, as prices for tourists are often inflated; aim for 50-70% of the initial quoted price.
- If approached by guides in Ho Chi Minh City asking about hotels, always state you have one booked, even if you don't, to avoid being steered to specific places or taxi scams.
- Cross busy streets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City by walking slowly and predictably; motorbikes will flow around you, so avoid sudden stops or movements.
- Download the Grab app (or Gojek) for ride-hailing and food delivery to ensure metered, fair-priced transportation and avoid potential taxi scams in major cities.
- Withdraw cash at large bank ATMs like Vietcombank or Agribank for better reliability and lower fees; look for ATMs inside bank branches for added security.
- For currency exchange, official gold shops (e.g., in Hanoi's Old Quarter or HCMC District 1) often offer slightly better rates for major foreign currencies than banks.
- Book popular overnight trains (e.g., Hanoi to Da Nang/Hoi An) directly through the official Vietnam Railways website (dsvn.vn) several weeks in advance for sleeper berths.
- At street food stalls, local markets, or small shops, be prepared to pay with Vietnamese Dong (VND) cash, as card payments are rarely accepted.
- When visiting multiple heritage sites, such as in Hue or Hoi An Ancient Town, purchase a combo ticket if available to save money on entrance fees compared to individual purchases.

Note: Travel conditions, regulations, and local customs may change. We recommend verifying essential details — such as visa requirements, emergency contacts, and payment options — closer to your travel date.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Visa requirements for Vietnam vary significantly by nationality. Many citizens (e.g., UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Nordic countries, South Korea, Japan) can enter visa-free for up to 45 days. US, Canadian, Australian, and Indian citizens typically require an e-visa, which can be applied for online via evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. The e-visa allows a single entry stay for up to 90 days. All visitors must hold a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond their intended stay. Other nationalities should check the official Vietnam Immigration Department website for specific requirements.
Local Customs & Etiquette
Show deference to elders, which is highly valued in traditional Vietnamese culture; a polite nod or slight bow is an appreciated gesture. It's common to remove your shoes before entering someone's home or a temple; watch what locals do and follow suit. Avoid public displays of affection and pointing with your finger; instead, use an open hand or the whole hand to gesture. When paying or handing items to someone, use both hands or your right hand, as the left is considered less clean. Don't mix alcohol and motorbikes under any circumstances, as driving under the influence carries severe legal consequences.
Safety Overview
Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are generally safe regarding violent crime, but opportunistic theft is common. The most prevalent crimes are pickpocketing and 'snatch theft' from motorbikes, often targeting phones and bags on busy streets; keep valuables secured in front pockets or cross-body bags, away from the roadside. In HCMC, be cautious of scooter-riding scam artists who might try to mislead tourists about hotels or overcharge for services; always state you have a hotel booked if approached. Be extremely wary of people offering drugs on the street, as drug offenses carry severe penalties in Vietnam. Avoid mixing alcohol and motorbikes, as traffic laws are strictly enforced.
SIM & Connectivity
SIM Options
📍 Noi Bai (HAN) or Tan Son Nhat (SGN) airport kiosks, official Viettel stores, most convenience stores
📍 Noi Bai (HAN) or Tan Son Nhat (SGN) airport kiosks, official Mobifone stores, phone shops
📍 Online purchase and activation via Airalo app before arrival
Free Wi-Fi access is reliably provided at nearly all hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and cafés across Hanoi, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City. Hoi An also boasts a widely available citywide network; connect by opening your browser and clicking the banner. While ubiquitous, speeds can vary, so a local SIM provides more consistent data.
Useful Apps
Ensure your phone is unlocked before traveling if you plan to purchase a physical SIM card, as locked phones will not accept a local SIM. Local SIM cards are very affordable and offer widespread 4G/5G coverage, making them more reliable for continuous connectivity than relying solely on public Wi-Fi.

Visa requirements vary by nationality. Many European citizens (e.g., UK, Germany, France) can visit visa-free for up to 45 days. US, Canadian, Australian, and Indian citizens typically need an e-visa, allowing a single entry for up to 90 days. Always check the official Vietnam Immigration Department website (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn) for the most current information based on your nationality and ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your stay.
Vietnam is generally considered safe for solo female travelers, with violent crime being rare. However, petty theft, especially bag snatching from motorbikes, is common in crowded cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Stay vigilant, keep valuables secure, and use reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab. Hanoi's Old Quarter and Ho Chi Minh City's District 1 are well-trafficked and generally safe, even at night.
From Noi Bai (HAN), the cheapest option is public bus (e.g., Bus 86 to Hanoi Railway Station or Bus 7 to Kim Ma) for around 30,000-45,000 VND. Taxis are abundant, costing 250,000-400,000 VND. For convenience and a fixed price, use Grab for a car (around 250,000-350,000 VND) or a private airport transfer pre-booked through your hotel.
From Tan Son Nhat (SGN), public buses (e.g., Bus 109 or 152 to Pham Ngu Lao/Ben Thanh Market) cost 15,000-20,000 VND. Taxis are widely available, typically 150,000-250,000 VND to District 1; always ensure the meter is used. Grab cars (around 120,000-200,000 VND depending on traffic) offer a transparent, metered alternative and are highly recommended to avoid potential taxi scams.
For long distances (e.g., Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City), domestic flights with carriers like VietJet Air, Bamboo Airways, or Vietnam Airlines are the quickest option. For journeys like Hanoi to Hoi An (via Da Nang) or Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang, overnight sleeper trains (Vietnam Railways) offer a comfortable experience. Sleeper buses are a budget-friendly but less comfortable alternative for inter-city travel, particularly for shorter routes like Da Nang to Hoi An.
The best time to visit Vietnam varies by region due to its length. Generally, the dry season from November to April offers pleasant weather across much of the country. However, Northern Vietnam is cooler during this time, Central Vietnam is prone to rain and typhoons from September to January, and Southern Vietnam is hot and humid during its wet season from May to November. For a comprehensive trip, shoulder seasons (April-May or September-October) can offer a balance with fewer crowds and generally agreeable weather across regions.
Tipping is not customary or expected in Vietnam, and service charges are rarely added to bills. However, for exceptional service, especially in tourist-focused areas like hotels, tour guides, or spas, a small gratuity (e.g., 20,000-50,000 VND) is appreciated but entirely optional. Taxi drivers do not expect tips but will round fares up to the nearest convenient amount.
To avoid common scams, always agree on a price before starting a ride in cyclos or non-metered taxis; using ride-hailing apps like Grab ensures transparent pricing. Be wary of overly persistent street vendors or touts offering unsolicited 'help.' When renting motorbikes, thoroughly photograph the bike's condition before and after, and never give your original passport as collateral; a copy or a smaller deposit should suffice.
