This route connects Southeast Asia's most defining cultural and historical epochs, from modern Bangkok's urban sprawl to Siem Reap's ancient Khmer empire, and Hanoi's unique French-influenced heritage. Compared to a route focusing on Thailand's islands and southern Vietnam, this itinerary provides unparalleled historical depth at Angkor Wat and distinct urban experiences in Hanoi's Old Quarter. The alternative would trade ancient temple architecture and Hanoi's particular blend of colonial and socialist history for a more beach-centric, less historically dense experience.

📅 Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit all three destinations is during the cool, dry season from November to February. Temperatures in Bangkok average 25-30°C, Siem Reap 24-32°C, and Hanoi 18-24°C, with lower humidity. This period sees the least rainfall and pleasant weather for sightseeing, but also the highest tourist crowds and accommodation prices. The hot season (March-May) brings temperatures soaring to 35-40°C, while the wet season (June-October) has daily heavy downpours, high humidity, and lush landscapes.

What Travelers Say

>>!Written from personal experience and perspective. AI was used to help with structure and wording. The content and knowledge are my own. !< As a local Thai from Chiang mai. Not trying to fear-monger. Thailand is genuinely wonderful. But after returning to live here, these are the gaps I see first-timers fall into that some of travel blogs skim over because they’re not glamorous. 1. The tap water will wreck you by day 2. Not just drinking. Ice cubes, pre-cut fruit at markets, anything...

Touts can be a hassle at many of the better-known tourist sights. Don't trust a single word of unsolicited advice, especially if it involves temples closed for Buddhist holidays, 20-baht tuk-tuk rides and/or their cousin's jewellery shop. Don't let strangers steer you away from your intended destination. When taking a taxi, be sure to insist on the meter. If the driver refuses, or quotes silly prices, just walk out and get a different one, as usually there are plenty of them available. If multiple taxis refuse to take you, or you just want to ride it once, you can take a tuk-tuk, but always agree on a price in advance. In the go-go bar zones, beware of touts who try to drag you into the upstairs bars with offers of ping-pong shows and 100-baht beer. The beer may well be 100 baht, but the "show" you'll be treated to will be 1,000 baht or more. Rule of thumb is, if you can't see inside from street level, the establishment is best avoided.

Some of Angkor's sites were built as Hindu temples, while some were built as Buddhist temples, and yet others were converted over the years. Today, most of Angkor's major temples house at least a few Buddha statues (nearly all added later) and draw a steady stream of monks and worshippers. You may be approached for donations, but these are likely to be scammers, as genuine Theravada Buddhist monks are not allowed to touch money or solicit donations. Because these are still holy spaces for Cambodians, you are asked to follow the dress code that the Cambodians follow when visiting any temple or holy space, meaning "long trousers or skirt, and covered shoulders." As of May 2019, a ban on exposed shoulders is being strictly enforced for the uppermost level of Angkor Wat, and possibly in some other spots too. Covering your shoulders with a scarf is not accepted, but you are of course welcome to buy a T-shirt from vendors just outside the temple. In other locations very near to active shrines of worship, you may be politely asked to leave if you don't conform to the dress code, but in most areas of the park, no one will say anything.

Nah, Hanoi's ok, there are lots more chaotic places. Once you get crossing the street down you'll be fine.

Hanoi · r/travel

Only been to the north but my take: I found the food to be incredible and incredibly cheap. The coffee is to die for. The ha giang loop in the north was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done in my life and the prettiest most unreal landscape in the world. In Hanoi, the people don’t give a shit about you but are usually kind and helpful when you engage with them. I admit there’s places that are tourist traps, unfortunately Ha long bay being one of them - just way over crowded and polluted...

Activities

USD 120 (~VND 2.9M)
💡
Practical

Very cheap overall across Bangkok, Siem Reap, and Hanoi — expect around $40-60/night for basic private rooms and $3-5 for quality street meals per person. Bottled water is essential in all three countries; prioritize busy street food stalls with high turnover for hygiene.

💸
Saving

Given your strict $120 activity budget for two, plan for only a 1-day Angkor Wat pass ($37/person) in Siem Reap. Supplement this with free activities like exploring local markets and river walks, as a 3-day pass ($62/person) for both would exceed your entire activity allocation.

💡
Practical

Upon arrival in Bangkok, purchase a local Thai SIM card like '1-2-Call' from AIS for approximately 50 baht (~$1.50 USD) at any 7-Eleven. This provides cheap local data and calls, which is far more cost-effective than international roaming or relying on hotel Wi-Fi.

💸
Saving

Utilize ride-hailing apps such as Grab (prevalent across all three destinations) for local transport to avoid inflated prices from tuk-tuks or unmetered taxis. Expect rides to be as low as $1-3 for short city trips, significantly helping to manage your $220 transport budget.

Splurge

For a culturally rich yet affordable splurge, treat yourselves to an authentic Thai massage in Bangkok for around $15-20 per hour. Look for well-regarded establishments for a high-quality, relaxing experience that provides excellent value for your tight budget.

This trip prioritizes the foundational cultural and historical anchors of three diverse nations: modern Bangkok's dynamic urban landscape, the ancient Khmer empire's architectural wonders at Angkor, and Hanoi's distinct blend of French-colonial and Vietnamese heritage. It necessarily skips Southern Thailand's idyllic limestone karsts and turquoise beaches of Phuket or Krabi, trading seaside relaxation for historical immersion. Also missed is the full traverse of Vietnam, including Hue's solemn Imperial City and Hoi An's charming, lantern-lit riverside streets, which would offer a different historical and cultural dimension.

Given the very tight budget, extensive adventure activities like diving or trekking are also foregone in favor of city exploration and key historical sites. Extend the trip by 3-4 days to include Central Vietnam, specifically Hue and Hoi An. From Hanoi, a domestic flight or overnight train could connect you to Hue, allowing exploration of the solemn grandeur of the Imperial City and ancient royal tombs.

Continuing to Hoi An unveils a charming, lantern-lit riverside town, perfect for exploring unique traditional craftsmanship and enjoying world-class cooking classes, offering a distinct cultural contrast to Hanoi. This itinerary follows a balanced pace — intense sightseeing days alternate with recovery days for rest and spontaneous exploration. Want a different pace?

Good to Know

Thailand

Meal timesLocals eat frequently throughout the day. Breakfast is typically from 6-9 AM, lunch from 11 AM-2 PM, and dinner from 6-9 PM. Street food stalls often operate much longer, some even 24 hours.
TippingTipping is not customary for street food vendors. In sit-down restaurants, a 10% service charge may already be included. If not, rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% for good service is appreciated but not strictly expected.
WaterTap water is generally not safe to drink outside of major hotels. Always opt for bottled water, which is readily available and inexpensive. Be cautious with ice from street vendors, especially if it appears cloudy or is not from a reputable source.
VegetarianFor vegetarians, specify 'mang sa wirat' (vegetarian) and 'mai sai nam pla' (no fish sauce) as many dishes use it. For strict vegan, ask for 'jay' (เจ), which avoids meat, dairy, eggs, and pungent vegetables like garlic and onion. If you have allergies, prepare a Thai allergy card, as ingredients can be complex and language barriers exist.
PaymentCash is king for street food, small local restaurants, and market stalls. Credit cards are widely accepted at larger restaurants, hotels, and shopping malls. It's always wise to carry small denominations of Thai Baht.
EtiquetteThais generally eat with a fork and spoon, using the fork to push food onto the spoon. Chopsticks are common for noodle dishes. It's polite to share dishes when dining with others. Tipping is not mandatory at street stalls but appreciated for good service in restaurants; rounding up a small amount is common.

Vietnam

Meal timesBreakfast is early, typically from 6-9 AM. Lunch is generally from 11 AM-1 PM, and dinner is enjoyed from 6-8 PM. Many street food stalls operate with more flexible hours, often closing when they sell out.
TippingTipping is not customary in local eateries and is not expected. Rounding up the bill or leaving a small amount is appreciated but entirely optional. Higher-end restaurants may include a service charge.
WaterTap water is not safe to drink in Hanoi. Always use bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, and even rinsing. Exercise caution with ice at small street stalls to avoid stomach issues.
VegetarianFor vegetarians, learn the phrase 'ăn chay' (vegetarian) or 'không thịt' (no meat) and 'không nước mắm' (no fish sauce). Vegan options can be challenging due to the pervasive use of fish sauce and egg; communicate clearly or use a translation app. For allergies, specify ingredients clearly.
PaymentCash (Vietnamese Dong) is king for most street food vendors and small local restaurants. While larger establishments and cafes may accept credit cards, it's wise to carry small denominations of cash for daily expenses.
EtiquetteChopsticks are commonly used; avoid sticking them upright in your bowl, as it resembles incense at funerals. Slurping noodles is generally acceptable. When dining with a group, dishes are often shared family-style.

Cambodia

Meal timesBreakfast is typically early, from 6-9 AM, with lunch from 12-2 PM. Dinner is usually from 6-9 PM, though street food vendors operate throughout the day and into the late evening.
TippingTipping is not traditional but always appreciated, especially in tourist-heavy Siem Reap. Rounding up the bill or leaving a small amount (5-10% for good service) in restaurants is a kind gesture, but not expected.
WaterTap water is not safe to drink in Siem Reap or Cambodia. Stick to bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth. Be cautious with ice, especially from street vendors; look for commercially produced, clear ice cubes.
VegetarianVegetarian options are available, but specify 'ot sach' (no meat) and 'ot trey' (no fish) or 'ot prohok' (no fermented fish paste) for truly vegan dishes. English is widely spoken in Siem Reap's tourist areas, so communication about allergies is generally manageable.
PaymentCash in US Dollars is the dominant currency and preferred for most transactions, especially at small stalls and markets. Cambodian Riel is used for smaller change. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and upscale restaurants, but always carry small USD denominations.
EtiquetteUse a fork and spoon for most dishes; chopsticks are common for noodles. Food is often served family-style, so share dishes. Avoid wasting food. Use your right hand for eating or passing items, especially when eating street food.

BargainingBargaining is expected and common in most markets (Chatuchak, street stalls, smaller shops) but not in department stores or chain retailers; aim to start negotiating at 40-50% off the initial asking price and settle for a 20-30% reduction.

Vietnam

CustomsTravelers can typically bring a reasonable quantity of food items (spices, coffee, tea) for personal consumption. Alcohol limits are generally 1 liter for spirits over 22% ABV, 2 liters for wine, or 3 liters for beer. Antiques or items made from protected wildlife (like ivory or certain woods) may require special permits or be prohibited entirely.
Tax refundVietnam does not have a comprehensive VAT refund scheme for tourists on most retail purchases. Some duty-free shops at international airports offer tax-exempt purchases for departing passengers on specific items.
PaymentCash (Vietnamese Dong - VND) is preferred for small purchases at markets, street vendors, and smaller shops. Credit cards are widely accepted at larger stores, restaurants, hotels, and boutiques, but always carry some smaller denomination cash.

BargainingBargaining is expected in local markets like Psar Chaa and the Night Market, where you can typically aim for 20-30% off the initial asking price; prices are generally fixed in boutiques, department stores, and social enterprise shops.
  • In Bangkok, always insist that taxi drivers use the meter (มิเตอร์). If they refuse or quote a flat fare, wave them off and flag down another; many will try to overcharge tourists, especially around major attractions.
  • For Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, purchase your temple pass online via Angkor Enterprise (AngkorEnteprise.gov.kh) beforehand to save time at the ticket booth; a 3-day pass (recommended) costs $62.
  • Use Grab for motorcycle taxis ('xe ôm') or cars in Hanoi, especially at night, as it offers fixed, fair prices and GPS tracking, avoiding potential overcharging from street touts.
  • Carry small denominations of local currency (THB, KHR, VND) for street food, local markets, and small purchases, as many vendors do not accept cards.
  • When bargaining at markets (e.g., Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok, Old Market in Siem Reap, Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi), start at 40-50% of the asking price and be prepared to walk away to get a better deal.
  • Pre-book popular long-distance trains (e.g., Bangkok to Chiang Mai, overnight sleeper trains in Vietnam) via 12Go Asia several weeks in advance, particularly during peak season, as they sell out quickly.
  • Verify opening hours of temples and attractions on Google Maps before visiting, as many close earlier than expected or have specific breaks (e.g., Angkor Wat ticket booth closes at 5:30 PM for sunrise tickets).

Visa & Entry Requirements

For Thailand, US, UK, EU, AU citizens typically receive a 30-day visa exemption upon arrival. For Cambodia, US, UK, EU, AU citizens can obtain a 30-day e-Visa online (evisa.gov.kh, ~$36) or a Visa on Arrival ($30-35). For Vietnam, US, UK, EU, AU citizens generally require an e-Visa (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn, ~$25-30) in advance; visa-free stays vary by nationality (e.g., UK/EU 15-45 days). Indian citizens need an e-Visa for all three countries. All travelers must have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond their intended stay.

Local Customs & Etiquette

When visiting temples or pagodas in Thailand, Cambodia, or Vietnam, always remove your shoes before entering and ensure shoulders and knees are covered; modest dress is a sign of respect. Never touch someone's head in Thailand, as it's considered the most sacred part of the body. In Cambodia and Vietnam, bargaining is expected at markets; always do so politely with a smile, not aggressively. When exchanging money or making payments, use your right hand to give or receive items, as the left hand is often considered unclean.

Safety Overview

While violent crime is rare across the region, opportunistic theft is common; always watch your bags in crowded areas, especially on Bangkok's Khao San Road where 'tuk-tuk' touts may try to divert you to gem scams or tailor shops. In Cambodia, due to widespread poverty, you might feel targeted for overcharging or constant solicitations; firmly decline unwanted offers. Be extremely cautious with alcohol and motorbikes in all countries; never mix them. Always use condoms, and avoid anyone offering drugs on the street, as penalties are severe. Emergency: Thailand (191), Cambodia (117), Vietnam (113).

Visa requirements vary significantly by nationality. US, UK, EU, and AU citizens typically get 30-day visa-free entry to Thailand. Cambodia offers a 30-day e-Visa or Visa on Arrival. Vietnam usually requires an e-Visa in advance for most nationalities, with some exceptions for short visa-free stays (e.g., 15-45 days for UK/EU). Indian citizens generally need an e-Visa for all three countries. Always check official government websites for the latest requirements for your specific passport before traveling.

All three cities are generally safe with low violent crime rates. The primary concern is opportunistic theft, especially in crowded tourist areas like Khao San Road in Bangkok or markets in Hanoi. Be vigilant with your belongings, use reputable transport (like Grab), and avoid isolated areas at night. In Siem Reap, specifically, poverty can lead to persistent solicitations or attempts to overcharge; a firm but polite 'no' is usually sufficient. Always be wary of unsolicited offers or 'helpful' strangers.

In Bangkok, the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are efficient for getting around central areas. For other places, Grab (ride-hailing app) and metered taxis are recommended. In Siem Reap, tuk-tuks are the primary mode of transport, often hired for full days to visit Angkor Wat. In Hanoi, Grab for car or motorbike taxis is popular, as are traditional 'xe ôm' (motorbike taxis) and cyclos, but agree on a price first with street vendors.

In Thailand, the Thai Baht (THB) is the official currency. In Cambodia, the US Dollar (USD) is widely accepted for most transactions, with the Cambodian Riel (KHR) used for smaller change (e.g., anything under $1). In Vietnam, the Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the official currency. It's advisable to carry small denominations of local currency in each country for markets, street food, and small purchases, as card payments are not universally accepted.

Tipping is not a strong cultural expectation in any of these countries, and often a service charge is included in higher-end restaurants and hotels. However, small tips are always appreciated for good service, especially by tour guides, massage therapists, and bellhops. For casual dining, you can round up the bill; for exceptional service, 20-50 THB, 1-2 USD, or 20,000-50,000 VND is a suitable gesture.

Pack lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for a tropical climate. Include long-sleeve shirts and pants for visiting temples and protection from mosquitos and sun. A compact umbrella or light rain jacket is crucial for the wet season. Don't forget high-strength DEET mosquito repellent, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and comfortable slip-on shoes for easy removal at temples. A small amount of local cash in small denominations will also be very useful.

The optimal time is from November to February, during the cool and dry season. This period offers pleasant temperatures, lower humidity, and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for sightseeing. However, it is also the peak tourist season, meaning higher prices and larger crowds. If you prefer fewer crowds and don't mind occasional rain, the shoulder seasons (May-June or October) can also be good, though hotter and more humid.

For Bangkok, you'll arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). For Siem Reap, it's Siem Reap International Airport (REP). For Hanoi, your entry point will be Noi Bai International Airport (HAN). All airports have readily available transport options (taxis, Grab, airport buses) to city centers.
