Italy's most famous festivals, with 2027 dates
Palio di Siena
Major festival
- Where: Piazza del Campo, Siena, Tuscany
- 2027 dates: July 2 (Palio di Provenzano) and August 16 (Palio dell'Assunta)
- Tickets: the piazza's center is free, standing room only; a window or stand seat needs booking months ahead
Siena runs the Palio twice a year: the Palio di Provenzano on July 2 and the Palio dell'Assunta on August 16. Ten of the city's 17 contrade, drawn by lot, send riders bareback three times around Piazza del Campo's tufa-covered track. The race lasts about 90 seconds, and a horse that crosses the line first without its rider, "scosso," still wins.
Horses are at real risk during the race. Jockeys can legally whip rival mounts, and falls are common on the track's tight turns. Siena's city government runs a veterinary commission that has blood-tested every horse for banned substances since 1999. Horses too old or injured to race retire to a dedicated home near Radicondoli, run jointly with Italy's forestry corps since 1991.
Watch from the piazza's standing-room center for free, or book a window seat in a building along the track months ahead. The three days before each race bring six trial heats and a pageant of flag-throwers and drummers from all 17 contrade.

Venice Carnival
Major festival
- Where: Venice, Veneto
- 2027 dates: January 23 to February 9, 18 days, ending on Shrove Tuesday
- Tickets: masked balls need tickets; watching the costumes and parades in the squares is free
- Official site: carnevale.venezia.it
Venice's Carnival fills St Mark's Square and the campos around it with capes and painted masks for 18 days, January 23 to February 9, 2027, ending on Shrove Tuesday. The festival has run in some form since the 1100s, revived in its modern costumed form in 1979.
Costumed figures pose for photos along the canals and in front of the Doge's Palace by day, and ticketed masked balls fill the city's palazzi by night. Mask shops around the city sell everything from simple paper masks to elaborate hand-decorated ones.
Watching the parades and costumes in the squares is free. Book a hotel months ahead, since rooms in Venice sell out and prices climb through the whole carnival. The February page has the city's cold-weather forecast and what to do once the crowds thin out after the 9th.

Verona Arena Opera Festival
Major festival
- Where: Arena di Verona, Verona, Veneto
- 2027 dates: June 11 to September 11, the 104th edition
- Tickets: required; sold through the festival's own site
- Official site: arena.it
Verona stages open-air opera inside a Roman amphitheater built in the 1st century AD. The 2027 season, the 104th, runs from June 11 to September 11.
Productions of Aida and Carmen fill the stone tiers with thousands of spectators, and the festival calls itself "the most Italian place on Earth."
Tickets sell out for popular productions, so book through the festival's own site once the season goes on sale. Verona hotels fill for the whole summer too, so book a room well ahead.

Alba International White Truffle Fair

- Official site: fieradeltartufo.org
Order a dish shaved with white truffle at Alba's truffle fair, held across six weekends each autumn in Piedmont's Langhe hills.
The 2026 edition, the 96th, runs October 10 to December 6; Alba had not published 2027 dates as of October 2026. Hunters and their dogs search the Langhe's oak and hazelnut woods for the white truffle, which still cannot be farmed.

Carnevale di Viareggio
- Where: Viareggio, Tuscany
- 2027 dates: six parade dates between January 30 and February 20
- Official site: viareggio.ilcarnevale.com
Venice's carnival wears masks; Viareggio's wears satire, in papier-mache floats that can reach 30 meters tall.
Teams of artisans, led by master builders called costruttori, spend twelve months building the floats in dedicated workshops called hangars. Hydraulic parts animate figures that caricature a politician, an executive or a celebrity.
The 2027 carnival runs six parade dates between January 30 and February 20 along the seafront promenade. The hangars stay open to visitors through the year, so an off-season trip can still watch next year's floats being built.

Umbria Jazz Festival, Perugia

- Tickets: free for street sets; major-name concerts are ticketed
- Official site: Umbria Jazz
Go to Perugia in July for ten days of jazz filling the city's medieval streets, from free street sets to major international names.
Umbria Jazz had not published its 2027 dates as of October 2026; a recent July calendar ran from the 9th to the 18th. Concerts spread across the historic center's piazzas, with free street sets running between the ticketed shows.

Vatican Easter & Holy Week, Rome
Major festival
- Where: Rome and Vatican City, Lazio
- 2027 dates: Palm Sunday, March 21, to Easter Sunday, March 28
Holy Week in Rome runs from Palm Sunday, March 21, to Easter Sunday, March 28, 2027.
The Pope leads a Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter's Square, then a Way of the Cross procession at the Colosseum on Good Friday, March 26. On Easter Sunday he gives the Urbi et Orbi blessing to the crowd filling the square.
No ticket is needed to watch from St Peter's Square. Book Rome well ahead, since Holy Week is one of its busiest weeks of the year.

Scoppio del Carro, Florence
- Where: Piazza del Duomo, Florence, Tuscany
- 2027 dates: March 28 (Easter Sunday)
Outside Florence's Duomo, a dove-shaped rocket called the colombina speeds out from the high altar each Easter Sunday to ignite the Scoppio del Carro, a cart of fireworks. Easter Sunday falls on March 28 in 2027.
The colombina carries a flame kept from relics of the Holy Sepulcher at the Santi Apostoli church, and a clean explosion is said to promise a good harvest for the year. White oxen pull the decorated cart to the piazza beforehand, a tradition more than 350 years old.
Thousands gather outside the Duomo to watch, free, once the Easter Mass lets out. Arrive early for a clear view of the piazza, since Florence is busy with Easter visitors that week.

Battle of the Oranges, Ivrea
- Where: Ivrea, Piedmont
- 2026 dates: Carnival Sunday, February 15; 2027 dates not yet published
- Tickets: entry to the battle's six gates costs €15 plus booking fees, sold through TicketOne; children under 12 and local residents enter free
- Official site: storicocarnevaleivrea.it
Ivrea's Battle of the Oranges reenacts a medieval revolt against a tyrant: teams on foot pelt teams riding carts with oranges for three days each February.
The 2026 battle fell on Carnival Sunday, February 15; Ivrea had not published 2027 dates as of October 2026. The carnival season always opens on Epiphany, January 6, with the rest of the calendar set around Easter.
Wear the red Phrygian cap, the berretto frigio sold around town, to mark yourself as a neutral spectator. Skip it and you're fair game for a face full of oranges. Entry to the battle's six gates costs €15 plus booking fees, sold through TicketOne.

Christmas in Rome
Major festival
- Where: Rome, Lazio
- 2027 dates: December, centered on December 24 and 25
Rome's Christmas season, Natale a Roma, runs through December. The season centers on the Vatican's Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and the Pope's Christmas Day Urbi et Orbi blessing from St Peter's Square.
A Christmas market fills Piazza Navona with nativity-scene stalls, alongside the Vatican's own nativity scene and Christmas tree in St Peter's Square.
Browse the Piazza Navona stalls by day, and expect Rome's hotels to fill up around Christmas week.

Calcio Storico Fiorentino
- Where: Piazza Santa Croce, Florence, Tuscany
- 2027 dates: June, timed near the 24th; exact dates announced only months ahead
- Tickets: required, sold only through official channels
Florence turns Piazza Santa Croce into a sand-covered pitch each June for Calcio Storico, a 16th-century ball game that mixes football, rugby and wrestling.
Four teams, one for each of Florence's historic quarters, play two brutal semifinals and a final. The final is timed near June 24, the feast of St John the Baptist and Florence's patron saint. The city announces the exact dates only months ahead.
A historical procession of 500 costumed figures precedes the final, and fireworks from Piazzale Michelangelo follow that night. Buy tickets only through official channels, since resale prices run high.

Festa di San Gennaro, Naples
- Where: Naples Cathedral, Campania
- 2027 dates: September 19, the most important of the feast's three yearly dates
Naples packs its Duomo on September 19, 2027, for the feast of its patron saint. The archbishop holds up two sealed vials of San Gennaro's dried blood to show the congregation whether it has turned liquid.
The miracle has been recorded since 1389 and is expected three times a year; the September feast, on the saint's actual feast day, is the most important of the three. When the blood liquefies, the cathedral erupts in applause that spills into the surrounding streets.
Watching inside the Duomo is free, though the Treasury Chapel and the cathedral fill early on the day. A silver bust and reliquary carry the saint's relics through the cathedral for the Solemn Mass that follows.

Misteri di Trapani
- Where: Trapani, Sicily
- 2027 dates: March 26 (Good Friday)
- Official site: I Misteri di Trapani
Twenty different guilds each carry their own wooden statue group through Trapani's streets for 24 hours every Good Friday, a Passion procession unbroken since the 1600s. Good Friday falls on March 26 in 2027.
Each guild built and still maintains its own statue group, some of them centuries old. The procession pauses through the night before resuming and finishing the next morning.
Watching from any street along the route is free, and the procession runs all night, so dress warm if you plan to follow it until morning.

Festa dei Ceri, Gubbio
Every May 15, three teams race wooden towers called ceri nearly three miles up Monte Ingino to St Ubaldo's basilica. Each cero stands about thirteen feet tall, weighs roughly 800 pounds and is topped with a saint's statue.
Tens of thousands of spectators line the route to honor Sant'Ubaldo, Gubbio's patron bishop. By custom, the cero carrying Ubaldo's own statue usually finishes first.
The main square and the climb up Monte Ingino are both free to watch from. Gubbio fills for the day, so arrange a room ahead.

Italy's public holidays in 2027
Italy's 2027 public holidays are the 12 national days below. Confirm a sight's opening hours before building a day of sightseeing around any of these dates.
| Date | Holiday | Italian name |
|---|---|---|
| January 1 | New Year's Day | Capodanno |
| January 6 | Epiphany | Epifania |
| March 28 | Easter Sunday | Pasqua |
| March 29 | Easter Monday | Pasquetta |
| April 25 | Liberation Day | Festa della Liberazione |
| May 1 | Labour Day | Festa del Lavoro |
| June 2 | Republic Day | Festa della Repubblica |
| August 15 | Assumption Day (Ferragosto) | Ferragosto |
| November 1 | All Saints' Day | Ognissanti |
| December 8 | Immaculate Conception | Immacolata |
| December 25 | Christmas Day | Natale |
| December 26 | St Stephen's Day | Santo Stefano |
Each comune also observes its own patron-saint day as a local holiday. Two are fixed by national law: Saints Peter and Paul in Rome on June 29, and Whit Sunday in South Tyrol. A town's own feast, such as Catania's Festa di Sant'Agata or Naples' Festa di San Gennaro, closes local offices even where it isn't a national holiday.
Plan a trip around an Italian festival
Build an Easter trip on the 7-day Italy itinerary, which already reaches Rome and Florence for Holy Week and the Scoppio del Carro. A 14-day Italy trip stretches far enough to add the Palio di Siena or the Verona Arena Opera Festival in summer. The 3-day Venice itinerary and the 3-day Rome itinerary fill out a city visit timed around Venice Carnival or Easter week. The 7-day Sicily itinerary takes in Trapani and Catania for their Easter processions.
The Italy travel guide has how long to stay and how to get around, and the Italy things-to-do guide covers the sights to book around a festival trip. The Italy food guide has what to eat once you're there, and the Italy best-time-to-visit guide puts these dates against the weather.
Choose the festival dates, and MonkeyEatingMango's planner builds the trip around them, every stop priced and timed.

Common questions
What is the most famous festival in Italy?
The Palio di Siena, the bareback horse race around Piazza del Campo in Siena, is the festival most associated with Italy. Venice Carnival and the Verona Arena Opera Festival follow close behind.
What are the biggest festivals in Italy?
Venice Carnival, the Palio di Siena, the Verona Arena Opera Festival, the Alba white truffle fair, Carnevale di Viareggio and the Umbria Jazz Festival are Italy's best-known festivals. Easter week and Christmas also fill Rome, Florence and Sicily with processions and markets.
When is the Palio di Siena 2027?
The Palio di Siena runs twice in 2027: the Palio di Provenzano on July 2, and the Palio dell'Assunta on August 16. Both races are run in Siena's Piazza del Campo, and both dates are fixed every year.
Is the Palio di Siena dangerous for the horses?
Jockeys ride bareback and can legally whip rival horses, and falls are common on the piazza's tight turns, so a horse can win riderless, a result called "scosso." Siena's city government runs a veterinary commission that blood-tests every horse, and horses that can no longer race retire to a dedicated home near Radicondoli.
When is Venice Carnival 2027?
Venice Carnival runs from January 23 to February 9, 2027, 18 days ending on Shrove Tuesday. Masked balls and costume parades fill the city's squares and canals throughout, especially around St Mark's Square.
When is Easter in Italy in 2027?
Easter Sunday falls on March 28, 2027, with Palm Sunday on March 21 and Good Friday on March 26. Holy Week processions run in Rome, Florence and across Sicily that week, and Easter Monday, March 29, is a national holiday.

How far ahead should I book a hotel for a festival in Italy?
Book six months to a year ahead for Venice Carnival, the Palio di Siena and Easter week in Rome and Florence, when rooms sell out and prices climb. Smaller festivals, such as Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio, need only a few weeks' notice.
What is the best month to visit Italy for festivals?
March brings the most festivals worth planning a trip around in 2027: Holy Week in Rome and Florence and the Misteri procession in Trapani all fall in the same week. Summer adds the Palio di Siena, the Verona Arena Opera Festival and the Umbria Jazz Festival.
What's the difference between a palio, a carnevale and a sagra?
A palio is a race run between a city's historic neighborhoods, like Siena's horse race around Piazza del Campo. A carnevale is a pre-Lent costume festival, and a sagra is a small local food festival, usually built around one dish or harvest.
