When should you go to the Amalfi Coast, and will your month line up with warm swimming, open hotels and light traffic? May, June, September and October are the Amalfi Coast's best months: comfortable for the Path of the Gods, with lighter crowds than August's peak, and a summer-warm sea from June on. Skip July and August for a quieter trip: hotel nights across Italy peak in both months, and August's coast road runs under a daily traffic restriction that reaches into September. Resort towns such as Positano and Ravello often close for winter from November to March, while Amalfi town and Sorrento stay open year-round.
- May, June, September and October balance warm weather against crowds: hotel nights across Italy climb to 1.45 times an average month in June and ease back to 1.31 in September, against August's 2.14.
- Plan around the coast road on a plate-friendly day in August or September: the odd-even rule runs every day in both months, 10 am to 6 pm.
- Base a winter trip in Amalfi town or Sorrento: Positano, Ravello and the coast's smaller towns often close hotels, restaurants and some ferries from November to March.
High and sea, °C: lowest 8.2 °C (47 °F), Positano in January; highest 29.3 °C (85 °F), Vietri sul Mare in August. Wet days: lowest 2, Amalfi Coast wet days in July; highest 14, Amalfi Coast wet days in November. Hotel nights: lowest Low (0.45), Hotel nights in November; highest Peak (2.14), Hotel nights in August. Best months: May, June, September, October.
The month-by-month table: The Amalfi Coast's twelve months compared
What is the odd-even plate rule on the coast road?
- Where: the SS163, the coast's single road from Vietri sul Mare to Positano, about 40 km, through Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Ravello, Atrani, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Furore and Praiano
- Hours: 10 am to 6 pm, when the rule is in force
- The pattern (2026 example): no restriction November to March, except Holy Week (daily); no restriction most of April and May, except the late-April bridge (daily); weekends and public holidays from the last weekend of May through July and in October; daily again in August and September
On the SS163, a car with an even last license-plate digit cannot drive between 10 am and 6 pm on an even-numbered date. A car with an odd digit cannot drive in that window on an odd date. The rule comes from an ANAS ordinance, published on Praiano's site.
The 2026 version of the rule ran daily during Holy Week and the April 25 to May 2 bridge. Outside those two windows, April and most of May carried no restriction at all. The weekend-and-holiday pattern then started on the last weekend of May and ran through July 31, before daily enforcement took over for August and September, and weekends and public holidays returned for October.
The 2027 calendar isn't published yet. If you're driving to one of the coast's August festivals, check the calendar as closely as the festival date.
Residents of the coast's 13 towns plus Agerola, disabled-permit holders, taxis, NCC cars, two-wheelers and emergency and police vehicles are exempt at all times. Hotel guests with a booking are also exempt, but only for the trip to arrive on check-in day and the trip to leave on check-out day. Outside that, a visitor's rental car gets no exemption: drive on a plate-friendly day, or use the SITA SUD buses and the Travelmar ferries that run alongside the restricted road.
Spring: March to May
Lemon season sets the pace of spring on the Amalfi Coast: March's harvest, April's Holy Week crowds, then May's blossom, well before the sea turns swimmable in June.
March
Best for the lemon harvest's start and Amalfi town without summer's crowds
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 13.5 °C (56 °F); 11 wet days; sea 13.9 °C (57 °F)
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, 5-day Amalfi Coast itinerary
March opens the sfusato lemon's main harvest on the coast's terraced groves, running through the end of July for the finest fruit. The sea is still too cold to swim, at 13.9 °C (57 °F), its lowest reading of the year.
March 19 is St. Joseph's Day on the coast. The harvest and the quiet streets are March's draw, not the beach: the sea stays too cold to swim.
Walk Amalfi town's waterfront before the cruise-ship crowds of later spring arrive, and look for the season's first lemons at the coast's own markets.
April
Best for the Path of the Gods and Holy Week in Amalfi town
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 17.1 °C (63 °F); 7 wet days; sea 14.8 °C (59 °F)
- Dates: odd-even plate restriction in force daily for Holy Week, March 30 to April 6, 2026, and again April 25 to May 2 for the Liberation Day/May Day bridge
- Plan it: Italy guide, Amalfi Coast guide
Holy Week brings the coast road's first full-enforcement stretch of the year: the odd-even plate restriction runs every day from March 30 to April 6. The restriction then lifts completely for most of the rest of the month, and cruise ships begin their season of calls at Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento.
The Liberation Day and May Day bridge, April 25 to May 2, brings a second full week of daily plate restrictions before the rule lifts again until the last weekend of May. Hike in April at 17.1 °C (63 °F), close to the trail's best conditions all year, but keep the car off the SS163 during those two windows.
Hike the Path of the Gods, the trail connecting Bomerano and Nocelle above Positano, in the early morning before the midday heat sets in.
May
Best for lemon blossom and a quiet coast before the summer rush
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 20.7 °C (69 °F); sea 17.6 °C (64 °F)
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, where to go in May
May is lemon blossom season on the terraces above Amalfi and Positano, while the harvest begun in March continues through July. May's high reaches 20.7 °C (69 °F), warm enough for a full day on the coast's cliffside paths and lemon terraces. The sea, at 17.6 °C (64 °F), still runs cool for most swimmers.
The odd-even plate restriction lifts entirely after the Liberation Day bridge ends on May 2, with no restriction again until the last weekend of the month. The free-driving window and the quieter coast are the draw this month, not low prices.
Walk the coast's lemon terraces while the fruit is still on the branch, and book a Path of the Gods hike before June's heat and crowds arrive.

Summer: June to August
Summer on the Amalfi Coast opens with Sant'Andrea's June feast and closes with Ferragosto's August fireworks, the sea warm enough to swim through all three months.
June
Best for Sant'Andrea's summer feast and the sea turning swimmable
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 25.2 °C (77 °F); sea 21.7 °C (71 °F)
- Dates: Festival of Sant'Andrea, Amalfi, June 27, fixed annually
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, where to go in June
Amalfi's Festival of Sant'Andrea, the first of two each year for the city's patron saint, fills the town on June 27, fixed annually. The sea turns swimmable this month, reaching 21.7 °C (71 °F) after May's cooler 17.6 °C (64 °F).
Don't plan a June trip around the Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare landing in Amalfi. The four cities rotate hosting duties rather than returning to any one of them on a fixed schedule; Pisa held the 2026 edition, and no 2027 host is named yet.
Book rooms for Sant'Andrea week ahead if the festival is the draw, and swim early in the day before the afternoon crowds reach the beach clubs.
July
Best for Villa Rufolo concerts at dusk
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 27.8 °C (82 °F); sea 25.1 °C (77 °F)
- Dates: Ravello Festival, 2026 exhibition at Villa Rufolo ran July 4 to September 27, with the concert season's own finale on September 5
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, 7-day Amalfi Coast hiking and beach itinerary
The Ravello Festival fills Villa Rufolo's clifftop garden with concerts each summer. Its 2026 exhibition at Villa Rufolo ran July 4 to September 27, with the concert season's own finale on September 5; 2027 dates aren't published yet. The sea climbs to 25.1 °C (77 °F) this month.
Skip July unless the Ravello Festival or its sea is the draw: June holds a still-swimmable 21.7 °C (71 °F).
Villa Rufolo's garden fills at dusk when a concert is scheduled, so check the festival calendar before booking a Capri boat trip for the same evening.
August
Best for the warmest sea, and Ferragosto's fireworks
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 27.9 °C (82 °F); sea 26.6 °C (80 °F)
- Dates: Ferragosto, Festa della Madonna Assunta, August 15, with fireworks in Positano; Sfogliatella Santa Rosa Festival, Conca dei Marini, first week of August
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, Italy guide
August is the Amalfi Coast's busiest month: the coast takes in roughly half a million visitors, against Amalfi town's 5,000 residents. Hotel nights across Italy peak at 2.14 times an average month, and the sea reaches its warmest reading of the year, 26.6 °C (80 °F). The odd-even plate restriction runs every day this month, 10 am to 6 pm, as it does in September.
Ferragosto, Italy's biggest summer holiday, falls on August 15, and Positano marks it with fireworks over the bay in honor of the Madonna Assunta. Conca dei Marini holds its own Sfogliatella Santa Rosa Festival in the pastry's own birthplace during the first week of the month.
Skip August unless the warmest sea or Ferragosto itself is the draw. Restaurant tables for Ferragosto week need booking well in advance.

Autumn: September to November
The sea barely cools from August to September, but hotel nights across Italy drop by more than a third, and the coast quiets fast once the odd-even restriction eases back to weekends in October.
September
Best for August's sea, a third fewer hotel nights
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 24.1 °C (75 °F); sea 25.2 °C (77 °F)
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, 5-day Amalfi Coast itinerary
The sea keeps nearly all of August's warmth through September, holding at 25.2 °C (77 °F) against August's 26.6 °C (80 °F). The daytime high eases to a gentler 24.1 °C (75 °F). The odd-even plate restriction still runs every day this month, the same daily pace as August.
Choose September over August for the trip: the daytime high eases 3.8 °C (6.8 °F) while the sea stays nearly as warm, down only 1.4 °C (2.5 °F).
Swim through the month, and expect the coast road to still need a plate-friendly day for any drive.
October
Best for an early-October swim before the season winds down
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 19.8 °C (68 °F); sea 22.3 °C (72 °F)
- Plan it: Italy best time to visit, Amalfi Coast guide
Verdelli lemons are harvested for limoncello this month, as the tourist season winds down. The sea stays swimmable in the first half of October at 22.3 °C (72 °F), before Capri's shops and the coast's summer resorts close for the season.
The odd-even plate restriction drops back to weekends only, and Travelmar's ferry timetable runs several coastal stops through October 31, the exact date its summer schedule ends. Bigger towns such as Sorrento stay open past that date.
Book a Path of the Gods hike for the cooler morning hours, and confirm ferry and beach-club schedules before relying on them later in the month.
November
Best for Sant'Andrea's winter feast, as the coast quiets for the season
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 15.9 °C (61 °F); 14 wet days; sea 20.0 °C (68 °F)
- Dates: Festival of Sant'Andrea, Amalfi, November 30; SITA SUD's coastal buses move to the winter timetable on November 2
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, Italy guide
Amalfi's tourist season ends at the start of November, its wettest month at 14 wet days. SITA SUD's coastal buses move to a winter timetable on November 2. On November 30 the city celebrates Sant'Andrea for the second time that year, the universal Catholic feast day for the saint.
"The most eagerly awaited moment of the festival is when the statue of the saint is carried out of the cathedral and the procession winds its way through the city streets," Visit Amalfi, the town's own destination management organization, writes of the day.
Base a November trip in Amalfi town rather than Positano or Ravello, and pack for rain on the month's 14 wet days. Hotels and restaurants in the smaller towns are already winding down for the season.

Winter: December to February
Positano and Ravello's hotels often shut for the season by December, so a winter trip here means basing in Amalfi town or Sorrento through the coast's quietest months of the year.
December
Best for Christmas markets in Amalfi, while smaller towns go quiet
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 12.1 °C (54 °F); sea 17.5 °C (64 °F)
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, Italy guide
December's quietest stretch of the year sets in, and many hotels and restaurants close for the season outside Amalfi town and Sorrento.
Amalfi and Salerno put up Christmas markets and nativity scenes through the holidays, even as the smaller resort towns quiet down. Christmas and New Year itself runs livelier than the rest of the month.
Catch Amalfi's Christmas market if the dates line up with your trip, and expect a hushed, uncrowded piazza outside the holiday week itself.
January
Best for fewer visitors, close behind November
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 10.2 °C (50 °F); sea 15.4 °C (60 °F)
- Plan it: Amalfi Coast guide, 5-day Amalfi Coast itinerary
January runs close behind November for the fewest visitors: hotel nights across Italy sit at 0.5 times an average month, just above November's 0.45. Come for the quiet, not the sunshine.
Villa rates across the coast sit at their lowest of the year. Epiphany, January 6, brings a small round of processions to Amalfi and Ravello.
Look for the black nets over the coast's lemon trees, protecting the fruit from frost until the spring harvest.
February
Best for a last quiet month before spring's crowds build
- Weather: Amalfi Coast highs 11.6 °C (53 °F); sea 14.2 °C (58 °F)
- Plan it: Italy guide, Amalfi Coast guide
February stays deep in the coast's low season, with the sea holding at 14.2 °C (58 °F), just a touch above March's own low point.
February is the Amalfi Coast's last month with no plate restriction in effect anywhere on the coast: Holy Week brings the first one in late March.
Walk Ravello's gardens without summer's crowds, and book a late-winter trip for quiet over warmth.

Common questions
What is the best month to visit the Amalfi Coast?
May, June, September and October are the Amalfi Coast's best months. The sea reaches 21.7 °C (71 °F) in June and holds at 22.3 °C (72 °F) in October, while the daytime high eases from August's 27.9 °C (82 °F) to a calmer 24.1 °C (75 °F) in September. Hotel nights across Italy run at 1.31 times an average month in September against August's 2.14.
When should you not visit the Amalfi Coast?
Avoid July and August for a quiet trip: hotel nights across Italy peak in both months, highest in August at 2.14 times an average month. August's coast road also runs under a daily traffic restriction that reaches into September; July's is weekends only. The coast takes in roughly half a million visitors in August, against Amalfi town's 5,000 residents.
What is the odd-even plate rule on the Amalfi Coast?
The odd-even plate rule bans a car with an even last license-plate digit from driving the SS163 coast road on an even-numbered date, and an odd digit on an odd date, between 10 am and 6 pm. The yearly pattern, as the 2026 ordinance sets it: daily during Holy Week and the late-April bridge, weekends and public holidays from the last weekend of May through July and in October, and daily again in August and September; 2027's exact dates aren't published yet. Residents of the coast's own towns, taxis, two-wheelers and emergency vehicles are exempt at all times; hotel guests with a booking may drive only to arrive on check-in day and leave on check-out day; otherwise a visitor's rental car is not.
Is the Amalfi Coast open in winter?
Amalfi town and Sorrento stay open and active through winter, but many hotels, restaurants and ferries in the coast's smaller towns close or cut back from November to March. SITA SUD's coastal buses move to a winter timetable starting November 2, and several ferry routes stop running until after Easter. Base a winter trip in Amalfi town or Sorrento rather than the smaller resort towns.
What is the cheapest time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
November through March is the Amalfi Coast's cheapest stretch, when hotel rates and crowds both sit at their lowest point of the year. Hotel nights across Italy drop to 0.45 times an average month in November and 0.5 in January. Beach clubs close for the season and many smaller-town hotels shut their doors, with Christmas and New Year as the one pricier, livelier pocket inside that otherwise quiet window.
When is the sea warm enough to swim on the Amalfi Coast?
The sea reaches a swimmable 21.7 °C (71 °F) in June and holds above 25 °C (77 °F) from July through September. October keeps a warm 22.3 °C (72 °F), though the Amalfi Coast's summer resorts and Capri's shops close for the season later in the month. May's sea, at 17.6 °C (64 °F), is still cool for most swimmers.
When is the best time to hike the Path of the Gods?
April, May, September and October suit the Path of the Gods best, the trail running along the ridge above Praiano and Agerola to Nocelle, above Positano. These shoulder months give comfortable temperatures without summer's heat. Elevated trails can stay cooler and less crowded than the coast road even at the height of summer.
When is the Amalfi Coast least crowded?
November through March brings the quietest crowds of the year, when hotel nights across Italy fall as low as 0.45 times an average month. April, May and October sit in a lighter middle ground, since Italian school-holiday crowds build from mid-June and hold through the end of September. July and August are the peak everywhere on this coast.
How high above the coast is Ravello?
Ravello sits 350 meters above the sea, on the hillside above Amalfi town. The highs on this page are for the coastal towns, so Ravello has no row of its own.
When is the Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare?
The Regata delle Antiche Repubbliche Marinare is an annual boat race between Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice, rotating host city each year rather than returning to Amalfi on a fixed cycle. Amalfi's most recent turn as host was 2025; the 2026 edition, the 71st, was held in Pisa on June 2. No host city has been announced yet for 2027.
When is the Festival of Sant'Andrea in Amalfi?
Amalfi celebrates its patron saint, Sant'Andrea, twice a year: June 27, fixed on the town's event calendar, and November 30. The November date coincides with the universal Catholic feast day for Saint Andrew the Apostle, when the statue of the saint is carried out of Amalfi Cathedral and through the city's streets.
