The finding

Across 238 AI-generated itineraries in 75 countries, the median cost per day for two travelers falls from $333 at three days to $98 at fourteen, a 3.4× drop, while the median trip total rises only from $1,000 to $1,375. Airfare is excluded throughout, and every figure is a modeled estimate from the planner that generated the itineraries, not booked spend.

  • $207 a day is the overall median, on a median trip of $1,250 for two.
  • Length moves the per-day number about as much as destination does at the extremes of the corpus: the 3.4× length gap sits next to the 3.6× gap between the cheapest country (Indonesia, $110) and the dearest (Japan, $400).
  • The total is nearly flat. A three-day trip and a fourteen-day trip sit $375 apart at the median, on the ground.
  • The index does not separate length from destination. Whether a two-week trip is cheap per day because it is long or because it goes somewhere cheap cannot be read from the published medians.
  • Use it as a planning ratio, not a price. The number to compare destinations on is per day; the number to book against is the total.

The curve is smooth until the last row. Ten days to fourteen is the one step where the total goes down, from $1,550 to $1,375.

How much does a 1-week vacation cost?

The median 7-day itinerary costs $1,450 for two on the ground, $207 a day, and it is the best-populated row in the index at 75 itineraries. Its per-day figure is the overall median to the dollar; its total sits above the overall median trip of $1,250, because most of the corpus is shorter than a week.

For a couple flying in, add two return fares. For a solo traveler, the per-day figure does not halve: 225 of the 238 itineraries are for two, and hotel rooms price by the room, so a solo trip lands somewhere between half and the full number depending on how much of the budget is the room. The index's own budget split puts accommodation at a median 41% of the total, food at 25%, activities at 21% and local transport at 9%.

Why does the cost per day fall with trip length?

One thing the data shows, and one it cannot.

The total is anchored per trip, not per day. Each itinerary's budget is a range the planner produced for that trip as a whole, anchored to destination cost-of-living data and the "mid-range" tier the corpus was generated at, and the medians of those totals rise from $1,000 to $1,375 while the day count goes from three to fourteen. Why the modeled totals grow that slowly is not something the index measures; it publishes no figure for activities per day, stay length or how the planner spreads a budget across a longer trip.

Where the longer trips go is the other candidate, and the index cannot separate it. The corpus includes multi-country routes through Southeast Asia and long single-country trips in countries at the top of the per-day table, and the published medians are per trip length or per country, never per length within a country. At 238 trips the cells would be too thin to trust. A longer trip costs less per day for some mix of both reasons; a traveler choosing between three days in Japan and fourteen in Indonesia gets the whole 3.4× and more, and a traveler choosing between three and fourteen days in the same country gets an unknown share of it.

Single-country trips with at least three itineraries; the full 19-country table is on the index page. The United States sits in the middle at $251 across 32 itineraries, the largest sample in the corpus.

What to do with the number

Pick the length before the destination. A budget of $1,500 on the ground covers the median three-day trip with $500 to spare, or the median two-week trip with $125 to spare. The index's swap table pairs the trade-off with real itineraries: a full week in Bali at $950 against three days in Tokyo at $1,250, both the midpoints of the itineraries' budget ranges. On those two figures, $1,500 is about three and a half days in Tokyo or eleven in Bali.

Then treat the per-day figure as the comparison and the total as the plan. A generated itinerary returns the total as a split by category, converted to the traveler's currency, which is the shape a booking budget needs. The per-day median is what to hold it against.

Methodology

The corpus is the 238 AI-generated itineraries in the Trip Cost Index 2026 (of 240 generated by MonkeyEatingMango's planner; two lacked a budget range), covering 75 countries, pulled on August 7, 2026. Trip cost is the midpoint of each itinerary's modeled budget range in USD; cost per day is that figure divided by trip length. Medians throughout, no averages. Airfare is excluded from every budget. The model anchors budgets to destination cost-of-living data and covers stays, food, activities and local transport for the itinerary's traveler count; 225 of 238 are trips for two, and 225 were generated at the mid-range tier. Duration rows need at least five itineraries; country medians use single-country trips with at least three.

These are modeled estimates. They are not booked prices, not surveyed spending, and not independently verified. The full method, the country table, museum and street-food prices, and an embed with attribution are on the Trip Cost Index page.
