Roadtrippers is the road-trip planner to pay for if you drive the US or Canada often; its free plan is a demo. The free account holds one trip of three stops, start and end included, so a Los Angeles to San Francisco drive had room for one stop in between. Basic, at $35.99 a year or $11.99 a month, is the first plan that fits a real trip.

Disclosure: MonkeyEatingMango, the product behind this blog, plans trips too and appears among the alternatives. Roadtrippers' plans and limits were read off roadtrippers.com and its help center on October 22, 2026, and its free planner was tried that day on a signed-in free account.

  • What it is: a road-trip planner on the web, iPhone and Android for the USA and Canada, from Roadtrippers.
  • Free: 1 saved trip, 3 stops per trip, with ads.
  • Paid: Basic $35.99 a year or $11.99 a month, Pro $49.99 a year or $16.99 a month, Premium $59.99 a year or $19.99 a month.
  • Trial: 7 days of Premium, annual plans only, card required.
  • The catch: Autopilot, the AI planner, is Premium only.

Is Roadtrippers free?

Roadtrippers is free to try, not to use for a trip. The free plan allows 1 saved trip and 3 stops per trip, and the start and end of the route count as two of the three. On October 22, 2026, a free account planned Los Angeles to San Francisco, "381 mi · 6h 37m", in under 10 seconds; Griffith Observatory went in as the one free stop, and adding Alcatraz opened the upgrade screen.

Roadtrippers' free planner from Los Angeles to San Francisco with one stop and the message "Free trips are limited to 3 stops"

The free planner does show the route, the drive time and, once you enter your car's fuel economy in trip settings, a fuel estimate: $66 for that drive at 25 mpg.

How much does Roadtrippers cost?

Roadtrippers sells three plans, each yearly or monthly, per roadtrippers.com/membership as of October 2026:

PlanPriceTripsStops per tripWhat it adds
Free$013The route, drive time and fuel estimate, with ads
Basic$35.99 a year or $11.99 a month320Custom map styles, trip export
Pro$49.99 a year or $16.99 a month550Navigation, trip collaboration, ads on the home page only
Premium$59.99 a year or $19.99 a monthUnlimited150Autopilot, offline maps, live traffic, RV routing and parking, member deals

The 7-day trial gives Premium features on any annual plan, needs a card, and bills the annual plan when it ends; monthly plans are billed straight away, and a returning user is charged at once.

Is Roadtrippers Autopilot worth it?

Autopilot is Roadtrippers' AI trip planner, and it comes only with Premium. On a free account it is preselected when you start a trip and asks what you are looking for, then opens the Premium upgrade screen, so it produced nothing to judge on the free test. Roadtrippers says it is built on "42 million real trips".

What are Roadtrippers' limitations?

  • The free plan is too small for a trip: 3 stops, start and end included.
  • Autopilot and offline maps need Premium, the top plan.
  • USA and Canada only, per the app store listings.
  • Collaboration needs Pro; route options such as avoiding tolls need a paid plan.

Roadtrippers alternatives

  • Google Maps: free routes with several stops and offline areas for driving; no catalog of roadside stops.
  • Wanderlog: a free map planner with unlimited places and drive times, editable by a group; Pro from $39.99 a year adds route optimization.
  • MonkeyEatingMango (the product behind this blog): writes a dated day plan with a time and a cost on every stop and asks how you travel, road trip included; it books nothing and has no turn-by-turn navigation.

For a road-trip plan by the day, see the 7-day California coast road trip as an example of the output.
