Your 10-Day Kenya & Tanzania Trip: Nairobi National Park & Beyond
This 10-day trip for a couple immerses them in East Africa's iconic wildlife and cultures, starting in Nairobi for urban wildlife encounters at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The journey continues with extensive game drives across the legendary plains of the Maasai Mara and Serengeti...
A nature trip, for a couple, flying from New York, with a focus on nature & wildlife & adventure
10-day trip
This packed itinerary prioritizes experiencing the Big Five across Kenya's Maasai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, alongside a taste of Nairobi's urban conservation. To fit five major destinations into 10 days, several deeper experiences are skipped: no specific guided bush walks in Naboisho Conservancy, missing the raw, on-foot adventure and intimate wildlife tracking. The legendary Olduvai Gorge, a cradle of human history with its ancient hominid fossils near Ngorongoro, is also omitted, sacrificing a profound look into our distant past.
Moreover, the extensive road transfers between countries consume significant daytime hours that could otherwise be spent on additional game drives or cultural immersion. Add 2-3 days to focus on the Serengeti, allowing for more extensive game drives and the possibility of witnessing the dramatic river crossings of the Great Migration, where thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-infested waters. This extension offers a deeper dive into one of Africa's most biodiverse ecosystems, moving beyond a rushed visit to fully absorb the scale and natural drama of its plains and potentially include a hot air balloon safari for an aerial view of the migration herds during peak season.
With more days you can also include a visit to the Olduvai Gorge, known as the 'Cradle of Mankind,' for a deeper insight into early human history and archaeology near the Ngorongoro Crater, offering a stark contrast to the wildlife focus with its significant paleontological sites, including ancient hominid fossils and stone tools. This itinerary follows a balanced pace — intense sightseeing days alternate with recovery days for rest and spontaneous exploration. Want a different pace?

4.2(23,073 reviews)"Jika Airport in Nairobi is truly a well-organized and efficiently managed airport. From my first visit, I was impressed by the cleanliness and the high level of security in place. The staff are professional, friendly, and always ready to assist passengers, even during busy hours with long queues. You can tell that the airport management puts real effort into improving services and ensuring customer satisfaction. The location of the airport is convenient and easy to access, especially for travelers arriving by car or taxi. There is plenty of parking space, and the area feels safe and well-maintained. Inside the terminal, there are several food outlets and small cafés offering quality meals and drinks at reasonable prices. Although the airport is primarily used for cargo and business flights, it still provides a safe, comfortable, and reliable experience for anyone traveling through. I also appreciate the airport's commitment to cleanliness and environmental care. The cleaning staff are constantly working to keep every area spotless. Free Wi-Fi is available in some sections of the airport, which is very helpful for travelers who want to work or stay connected with their families while waiting for their flight. Overall, Jika Airport is a place I would highly recommend to anyone looking for efficient, secure, and comfortable air travel services. It is one of the most organized airports in Nairobi, and I hope the management continues to improve and expand its facilities to reach even higher international standards."— Zechariah Jabane

Experiencing its vast open plains, endless skies, and untouched wilderness was both humbling and unforgettable. Every game drive felt different, with incredible wildlife sightings that exceeded all expectations. We were especially fortunate to witness part of the Great Migration in January, where we saw large herds of zebras and wildebeest moving together across the plains. Watching thousands of animals migrate freely in their natural habitat was an extraordinary and emotional experience something that must be seen to be truly appreciated. The scale of the Serengeti is simply overwhelming. The silence, golden grasslands, and the feeling of being completely immersed in nature create a deep sense of peace and wonder. Going up and then down the crater as the same sensation as entering Jurassic Park, and it only gets more spectacular once the jungle parts to reveal the great plain. 4.5(1,355 reviews)"We stayed one night at the Arusha coffee lodge and we absolutely loved it! Our driver/ground guide (Nassoro) was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful. We learned so much about coffee plants and various other plants and fauna around the lodge. He eventually told the staff my birthday was coming up and the whole kitchen came out singing (my first time hearing Jambo Bwana!) and an extra dessert. The rooms were absolutely gorgeous, luxurious, comfortable, and cozy. Keep in mind that it’s a lush area, and therefore mosquitoes, so definitely use the bug spray when you’re outside, especially at night. I would’ve loved to see more of Arusha, but this brief visit made me want to visit again! 😁"— Jenny Coombs

What Travelers Say
“Kenya experiences a wide range of tropical climates. It is hot and humid at the coast, temperate inland, and very dry in the north and northeast. It receives a great deal of sunshine all year round and summer clothes are worn throughout the year. However, it is usually cool at night and early in the morning. Nairobi is at high altitude and can be quite cold, even during the day, between June and August. The long rain season is from April to June, and the short rain season October to December. Rain is sometimes heavy and often falls in the afternoons and evenings. The hottest period is February to March, and the coldest July to August. Game viewing is best in the dry seasons, which are from mid-June to October, and from late-December to mid-March. The annual animal migration – especially migration of the wildebeest – occurs between June and September, with millions of animals taking part. It has been a popular event for film-makers to capture.”

“Although Kenya is predominantly Christian and somewhat liberal, there are areas with major Muslim influence, such at the Coastal regions, where it is considered indecent to wear short dresses. This is true in rural Christian areas as well. The locals, however, are extremely friendly. Beachwear is acceptable on the beach but not while strolling around town. Nudism and topless bathing are prohibited in Kenya. Even though some hotels allow topless or nude sunbathing, these are in restricted areas and not in public. Kissing or heavy petting is frowned upon in public, even though Kenyan youth engage in both liberally in night clubs. thumb|Homosexuality is against the law Permission is required in order to take pictures of people, as a matter of etiquette. Photos of military and public facilities such as police stations, banks, ferries, etc. are typically prohibited. If you are invited to a Kenyan home, it is proper to bring a small gift according to the occasion. If you are a white man and go out with Kenyans, you are expected to pay the bills. If you invite a Kenyan out to a pub or restaurant, you are also expected to pay their transport costs, especially if you are a man inviting a woman. It is disrespectful to reject food offered to you. Always accept tea and chapati, or mandazi, which is very commonly offered to visitors. The legacy of British colonial rule in Kenya is a sensitive subject, with the violent suppression of the 1950-62 Mau Mau uprising by the British government being a particularly sore spot among Kenyans. Tread carefully when discussing this with locals, and try to do more listening than talking. That being said, most Kenyans bear no animosity against regular British tourists, and you are unlikely to run into any problems so long as you are respectful and avoid political debates.”

“Nairobi has a reputation for thievery. Beware of snatch and grab, con artists, or groups of people following you. Scams are elaborate and can involve up to 10 or more people working together. The best advice for a tourist is to stay in the city centre, know where you are at all times, and pretend you know where you're going (even if you don't). If you find yourself in an unfamiliar area your best bet is to find a taxi (although you will probably pay dearly if the driver suspects a panicked westerner!) Don't carry large quantities of money or passports on the street, and assume that anyone trying to engage you is up to no good or trying to sell you something. If you stay smart and play safe, without going around much after dark, Nairobi can be a safe place to stay. Most locals are honest people who will happily help you if you approach them. The areas where you have to take special care are: Globe Roundabout, Archives, Ambassadeur, Muthurwa Market, around Nation Centre, Landies Road, Nyamakima, Kirinyaga Road, and Uhuru. Kenyans are proud people and there is not a lot of begging like you find in some other countries. Some opportunistic people will hang around shopping centres and beg, but they will generally accept a simple 'sorry' and leave you alone if you do not give. Many of these 'beggars' are middle-class kids or adults who have realised they can profit from exploiting white guilt, and should not be encouraged. If you are ever lucky enough to visit a slum as a local (not on some perverse tourist safari) you will discover the poorest of the poor do not even beg. Outside of tourist and expat communities, young children will become excited at the sight of a white person and may come running towards you to try to shake your hand while yelling out 'mzungu' (white person) or 'how are you?'. Older kids are more reserved, and you should be wary of kids who are older than 9 or 10 who are trying to distract or get close to you. Slums should be avoided by tourists as...”

“At the Westside Mall (intersection Kenyatta Ave and West Road) is a Java Coffee (like Starbucks) with free Wifi and good coffee. There are also many "Cyber" (internet cafes) all over down town. Nakuru is generally one of Kenya’s safer mid-sized cities, but normal urban precautions apply. The city center is busy, especially around the market and bus stages, and petty theft does occur. In town * Pickpocketing can happen in crowded areas such as the main matatu stages and open-air markets; keep phones, cameras, and wallets secure. * Avoid walking alone after dark, especially on quiet side streets. Use taxis or rideshare services instead. * Keep valuables out of sight, especially when seated near windows in matatus where “snatch-and-run” theft can occur. * Large public gatherings or political events can become tense—observe from a distance or avoid them altogether. Around Lake Nakuru National Park * The park is generally safe when visiting with a guide or staying in designated areas, but keep in mind: * Do not exit your vehicle except at marked viewpoints and picnic sites. * Wildlife such as buffalo, rhinos, baboons, and lions are unpredictable—maintain a safe distance at all times. * Baboons near Baboon Cliff and Makalia Falls can be aggressive if provoked or if food is visible; keep windows closed around them. * Roads become muddy during rainy seasons—use a reliable 4×4 if self-driving. Health * Nakuru has good access to clinics and pharmacies, but bring your own basic medical supplies and prescriptions. * Tap water is not safe to drink—use bottled or filtered water. * The area is not heavily malarial compared to western Kenya, but discuss malaria prophylaxis with your doctor. * Early mornings and lake drives can be chilly—carry a warm layer. Traffic * The A104 highway through Nakuru carries heavy truck traffic; use caution when crossing or merging onto main roads. * Traffic jams are common near the town center—keep belongings secure...”

Nairobi, Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Arusha offer East Africa's quintessential wildlife and cultural heritage, a depth not found in Southern African safari-only routes. This itinerary contrasts Nairobi's urban wildlife conservation efforts with the vast, untamed plains of the Mara and Serengeti, renowned for the Great Migration, which a solely Kenyan safari lacks. Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater adds a unique geological spectacle and high density wildlife experience that even other top parks don't quite match.
Across Kenya and Tanzania, the focus is on simple, hearty staples and fortifying meals perfect for safari adventures. In Kenya, Nairobi balances East African classics with Swahili-Arab influences around Tom Mboya Street, while the Maasai Mara offers lodge dining and local eateries serving ugali and stews. Moving to Tanzania, expect practical sustenance at Mwanza's 'mama ntilie' stalls for Serengeti-bound travelers, and filling dishes like wali na maharage in gateway towns near Ngorongoro and Arusha. Nationwide, look for grilled meats like nyama choma, starchy sides such as ugali, and ubiquitous chai masala.

📅 Best Time to Visit
The dry seasons are ideal for wildlife viewing in both Kenya and Tanzania. In Kenya, this is from January to March (short dry season, good for resident wildlife and wildebeest birthing in Maasai Mara) and July to October (long dry season, peak of the Great Migration in Maasai Mara). Temperatures generally range from 20-30°C. Tanzania shares these peak safari seasons, with June to October being excellent for the Great Migration in Serengeti and abundant wildlife across all parks. January to February is also prime for the wildebeest calving season in the Southern Serengeti. Expect pleasant temperatures around 20-30°C. Avoid the long rainy season from March to May when conditions are muddy and some roads can be impassable, though it is a low-crowd, green season with migratory birds.

Activities
Exceptionally tight overall — budget is stretched for major safari park entry fees ($70-100+ per person per day), which will dominate any activity budget. Outside of parks, local meals are cheap ($3-8) and basic guesthouses run $30-50/night, but stick to bottled water and busy food stalls.
With a strict activities budget, major multi-day safaris to Serengeti or Masai Mara are not feasible. Prioritize a single, budget-friendly day trip from Nairobi to a conservancy or national park like Nairobi National Park (entry $43 for non-residents) for a taste of wildlife without the multi-day expense.
Utilize local public transport like 'matatus' or 'dala-dalas' for inter-city and intra-city travel, which typically cost between $1-5 for a ride, significantly cheaper than private taxis or tour transfers.
Maximize your food budget by eating at local 'hotelis' (small restaurants) or busy street food stalls, where a filling meal of ugali, sukuma wiki, or chapati can cost $3-8 per person.
To adhere to the $30/night accommodation budget, focus on securing rooms in local guesthouses or budget hostels found in Nairobi's city center or Arusha, often available for $25-45 per night.

Free and without sign-inTrip Summary
- In Nairobi, always agree on taxi fares BEFORE starting the journey; cabs typically don't use meters, and rates can be inflated post-ride. Use Bolt or Uber apps for transparency.
- Avoid walking in Arusha at night, alone or in groups; cabs are plentiful but agree on fares upfront. Do not take motorcycle taxis (boda-bodas) after dark due to safety concerns.
- In Maasai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro, always adhere strictly to your safari guide's instructions regarding wildlife encounters and camp safety; these are true wilderness areas with dangerous animals.
- Carry Kenyan Shillings (KES) in Kenya and Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) in Tanzania for small purchases, local markets, and village visits, as card machines are rare outside major lodges.
- For payments in Kenya, set up M-Pesa at a Safaricom shop after getting a SIM; it's widely used for everything from supermarket bills to small vendor payments (e.g., KES 500 water bottle).
- Pre-book airport transfers from Jomo Kenyatta (NBO) to Nairobi or Kilimanjaro (JRO) to Arusha through your accommodation or a reputable tour operator to avoid inflated taxi prices upon arrival.
- On safari game drives (up to 10 hours), carry at least 2 liters of bottled water per person, as tap water is unsafe and dehydration is a risk in the heat.
- If traveling between Nairobi and Arusha, consider booking a regional flight (e.g., Safarilink, Kenya Airways, Coastal Aviation) which typically takes 1-2 hours, saving 8-10 hours of overland travel.
- Book your safari lodges and camps for peak season (July-October) at least 9-12 months in advance, especially for popular areas like Ngorongoro Crater, as capacity is limited and sells out.
- 1Lightweight long-sleeved shirts (khaki, neutral colors)
- 2Durable safari trousers (quick-dry, neutral)
- 3Wide-brimmed safari hat (UV protection)
- 4Multi-purpose scarf (dust, sun, warmth)
- 5Closed-toe walking shoes (sturdy, dust-resistant)

Visa & Entry Requirements
For Kenya: US, UK, EU, AU, and India citizens require an e-Visa. Apply online at evisa.go.ke. A single entry visa is approximately $51 USD, valid for up to 90 days. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended departure date and have at least two blank pages. For Tanzania: US, UK, EU, AU, and India citizens also require an e-Visa. Apply online at eservices.immigration.go.tz. A single entry visa is $50 USD (US citizens $100 USD), valid for up to 90 days. Passport must also be valid for at least 6 months beyond departure and have two blank pages. The East African Tourist Visa (EATV) covers Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda ($100), but not Tanzania; therefore, separate visas are needed if visiting both Kenya and Tanzania. Other nationalities should check the respective official government immigration websites for specific requirements.
Local Customs & Etiquette
In Kenya, a handshake is a common greeting; always use your right hand. Dress modestly, especially outside major tourist areas or when visiting religious sites. Always ask permission before photographing individuals, particularly the Maasai. In Tanzania, always use your right hand when shaking hands, eating, or passing items, as the left hand is considered unclean. Homosexuality is illegal, so public displays of affection should be avoided. Similar to Kenya, ask for permission before taking photos of people. While 'hakuna matata' is widely known, 'jambo' is a more common and direct greeting.
Safety Overview
Nairobi has a reputation for thievery, with elaborate snatch-and-grab scams involving multiple individuals, especially in the city center; always stay alert and avoid walking alone after dark. In Arusha, it is not advisable to walk at night, alone or in groups; always pre-agree cab fares as meters are not used. Maasai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro are wilderness areas with large predators and dangerous herbivores, so always follow your safari guide's instructions and camp safety protocols. Homosexuality is illegal in Tanzania, with public displays potentially leading to arrest and life imprisonment.
SIM & Connectivity
SIM Options

📍 Official provider shops in Arusha, Dar es Salaam, or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) arrivals
In Kenya, most hotels offer Wi-Fi, though speeds can be slow and often more reliable only at the front desk. Nairobi has numerous internet cafes, but connection speeds vary. In Tanzania, decent mobile phone reception is available even in some national parks. Many hotels and lodges throughout both countries offer Wi-Fi, sometimes with a cost or limited to common areas. Moshi (Tanzania) has co-working spaces like Kili Hub offering faster internet.
Useful Apps
Ensure your mobile phone is unlocked to use local SIM cards in both Kenya and Tanzania. When buying a SIM, always go to official vendor stores for proper registration, which typically requires your passport. In Tanzania, check that your chosen network provider offers 3G/4G services if you need mobile internet access, as not all do in all areas.

Yes, US, UK, EU, AU, and India citizens require e-Visas for both Kenya (evisa.go.ke, ~$51) and Tanzania (eservices.immigration.go.tz, ~$50-100). Both passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date and have two blank pages. The East African Tourist Visa does not cover Tanzania, so separate visas are necessary if visiting both countries.
Nairobi has known issues with snatch-and-grab theft and elaborate scams, so stay vigilant in the city center and avoid walking alone at night. In Arusha, night walking is also not advised; always use pre-booked or metered taxis and agree on fares upfront. Safari areas like Maasai Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro are safe for visitors when following guide instructions, but remember you are in true wilderness with dangerous wildlife.
You will need Kenyan Shillings (KES) for Kenya and Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) for Tanzania. While major lodges and tour operators may accept USD or credit cards, carrying local currency is essential for smaller purchases, local markets, and tips, especially outside major cities.
Tipping is customary for safari guides and lodge staff in both countries. In Kenya, expect to tip guides KES 1,500-2,500 per person per day, and lodge staff KES 500-1,000 per person per day. In Tanzania, guides receive TZS 15,000-25,000 per person per day, and lodge staff TZS 5,000-10,000 per person per day. These are general guidelines, and it's always appreciated.
Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing (long sleeves and trousers for sun and insect protection), a wide-brimmed hat, sturdy closed-toe shoes, and a warm jacket or fleece for chilly mornings/evenings. Binoculars, high-SPF sunscreen, DEET-based insect repellent, and a headlamp are also essential. Dust-proof bags for electronics are highly recommended.
The Great Migration typically occurs between July and October in Kenya's Maasai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti, with the iconic river crossings happening during this period. For the calving season in the southern Serengeti, January to February is the best time. These dry seasons offer excellent overall wildlife viewing across both countries.
The most time-efficient way to travel between Nairobi (Kenya) and Arusha (Tanzania) is by internal flight, which typically takes 1-2 hours. Reputable airlines like Safarilink or Kenya Airways operate this route. Overland travel by bus or private transfer is also possible but can take 8-10 hours, including border crossing formalities, which can be lengthy.
Yes, always use your right hand when shaking hands, eating, or passing items, as the left hand is considered unclean. Dress modestly, especially outside tourist areas or when visiting religious sites. Always ask for permission before photographing individuals. Be aware that homosexuality is illegal in Tanzania, and public displays of affection should be avoided in both countries.
