Short on time?Day trips from Las Vegas

Las Vegas is the best base in America for canyon country, and nothing else on the map comes close. The list below runs sixteen deep, from an hour-and-fifty red-rock run to St. George to a five-and-a-half-hour haul to the Santa Barbara coast, sorted by how far each sits from the city, because it is the drive time, not the map distance, that decides whether a place is worth two nights. Verified drive times, an honest all-in cost for two, and the month worth going.

Every drive time here was checked against a routing source, not the optimistic figure, and labeled one-way in typical traffic. The cost is an honest all-in estimate for two over two nights: lodging, driving, and meals out. The desert calendar runs backward: most of these are fall-through-spring trips, and Death Valley is a winter one.

Best for canyon country

If you make one weekend trip from Las Vegas, point it at canyon country. Five of the sixteen sit in it, and the far one is the Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon Village

Four and a half hours southeast, the South Rim is the far edge of a canyon-country weekend and the reason the haul is worth it. Hermit Road strings the cliffside overlooks along the gorge, the rim trail links Mather Point to the village, and the Bright Angel Trail drops below the rim for as long as your legs hold. El Tovar Hotel anchors the village itself. May, for warm rim days before the summer crush.

Bryce Canyon City

Just under four hours northeast, Bryce Canyon City is the hoodoo weekend. Sunrise Point looks into an amphitheater packed with jagged rock spires, the Navajo Loop Trail drops down among them, and Bryce Point holds the long view along the rim. The altitude keeps summer mild up here, and the approach on Scenic Byway 12 through Dixie National Forest is part of the trip. September, for clear days on the high rim.

Page

Four hours and twenty east, Page is the Horseshoe Bend weekend: the Colorado River carves a massive loop into red sandstone just outside town, and the overlook photograph does not prepare you for the scale. Getting on the water flips the view, a boat on the canyon floor turning the rim crowds into specks. October, once the desert heat breaks.

Kanab

Three hours and ten northeast, Kanab is the small base in the middle of canyon country. The Coral Pink Sand Dunes shift a short drive from town; walk them at dawn, while the sand is still cool. Day trips fan out to the Wave and Pipe Spring National Monument, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary fills an afternoon, and the Little Hollywood Movie Museum keeps the town's movie-set history. October, for cool sand and long light.

St. George

An hour and fifty northeast, St. George is the closest getaway on this list and the fastest way out of the neon. Snow Canyon State Park sets black lava cliffs against red sandstone dunes at the edge of town, and the Jenny Canyon Trail narrows into a short slot canyon. The St. George Utah Temple is the landmark in town. March, for mild days before the desert heat arrives.

Best for the desert and the Eastern Sierra

These trade canyon walls for open desert, and past Death Valley the road climbs into the Eastern Sierra.

Death Valley

Two hours and twenty west, Death Valley is the closest national park to Las Vegas and a winter trip, full stop. Zabriskie Point overlooks striped hills of mudstone and volcanic ash, the Golden Canyon Trail threads through them, and the salt flats at Badwater Basin crunch underfoot like nowhere else. Harmony Borax Works keeps the mining history on the way through. January, for days cool enough to walk it.

Joshua Tree

Three hours and fifty southwest, Joshua Tree swaps canyon walls for giant granite boulders and the twisted trees the park is named for. The Hidden Valley Nature Trail loops through the rock piles off Park Boulevard, Keys View is the overlook to drive up for, and the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum is the open-air detour worth an hour. Stay out after dark; the desert sky is half the reason to come. November, for cool days and long clear nights.

Lone Pine

Three hours and fifty west, Lone Pine sits where the rounded rocks of the Alabama Hills pile up against the jagged wall of Mount Whitney. Mobius Arch frames the peak for the photograph everyone makes the drive for, Whitney Portal Road climbs toward the Mount Whitney Trail, and the Museum of Western Film History in town covers the Westerns filmed among these rocks. Bishop

Four hours and ten northwest, Bishop is the deep Eastern Sierra weekend. The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest above town holds the oldest living trees known on Earth, North Lake sits up in the high country, and the Happy Boulders keep climbers busy between them. The Laws Railroad Museum covers the valley's rail past. September, for clear high-country days without the summer heat.

Lake Havasu City

Two and a half hours south, Lake Havasu City is the water weekend, built around London Bridge, which spans the channel between the lake and the Colorado River. Get on the water; boating is how this town beats the heat, and Lake Havasu State Park covers the beach day. Sara Park and the lakeshore lighthouses fill the drier hours. September, when the lake is still warm and the summer peak has passed.

Best for red rock towns

Two Arizona neighbors on the same run southeast: Sedona carries the rock, Flagstaff the cool air.

Sedona

Four and a half hours southeast, Sedona is the red-rock town weekend. The Bell Rock trail circles a formation that rises straight out of the crimson earth, Cathedral Rock and Airport Mesa carry the sunset, and the Chapel of the Holy Cross stands against the stone. The Red Rock Scenic Byway strings the formations together from the road. May, for warm trail days before the full summer heat.

Flagstaff

Three hours and fifty southeast, Flagstaff is the cool mountain escape of the group. Lowell Observatory still shows the telescope that first identified Pluto, Walnut Canyon National Monument keeps its cliff dwellings a short drive out, and Heritage Square and the Hotel Monte Vista anchor the evenings downtown. August, when the mountain air stays comfortable while the desert floor bakes.

Best for the California run

The long hauls point southwest, and the ocean is the reward. Palm Springs breaks the pattern with a resort weekend in the desert instead.

Los Angeles

Four hours and ten southwest, Los Angeles is the city weekend and the straightest shot on the list. The Getty Center holds the art and the view, Santa Monica Pier puts a boardwalk over the Pacific, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame absorbs the obligatory hour. October, for warm clear days after the summer beach crowds thin.

Stearns Wharf runs out over the Pacific with the mountains stacked behind town, the gardens at Old Mission Santa Barbara slow the whole trip down, and Butterfly Beach takes the last afternoon. Getting there and getting around

All sixteen are drives, and a car is the whole plan; nothing here works without one. The calendar runs backward from most of the country: summer heat makes Death Valley a winter trip and canyon country a spring or fall one, so aim the desert drives at the cool months and save August for Flagstaff or the coast. The I-15 run to Los Angeles and the coast backs up on Sunday evenings coming home; leave the beach early or eat dinner and drive late. Page and the Grand Canyon cross into Arizona, which skips daylight saving, so in winter the parks run an hour ahead of Vegas and in summer the clocks match. In Death Valley, top off gas and water before you enter; services inside are sparse.

Common questions

What's the best weekend getaway from Las Vegas? The Grand Canyon's South Rim, about four and a half hours out, with Hermit Road's overlooks and the Bright Angel Trail dropping below the rim. Closer in, St. George puts red rock at the edge of town in under two hours, and Death Valley is the closest national park at two hours twenty.

What's the closest weekend getaway from Las Vegas? St. George, an hour and fifty northeast, where Snow Canyon State Park sets black lava cliffs against red sandstone dunes. Death Valley at two hours twenty and Lake Havasu City at two and a half are the next closest.

How many weekend getaways are within 4 hours of Las Vegas? Eight of the sixteen on this list: St. George, Death Valley, Lake Havasu City, Kanab, Joshua Tree, Bryce Canyon City, Lone Pine, and Flagstaff. Los Angeles, Bishop, and Page sit just past the four-hour line.

What national parks can you visit on a weekend from Las Vegas? Death Valley at two hours twenty, Joshua Tree and Bryce Canyon at just under four, and the Grand Canyon's South Rim at about four and a half. All are drivable two-night trips from the city.

What's the best desert getaway from Las Vegas? Death Valley in the cool months for the badlands and the Badwater Basin salt flats, Joshua Tree for boulders and dark-sky stargazing, or Palm Springs for a warm pool under the palms. All three are winter and shoulder-season trips.

Where can you go from Las Vegas to escape the heat? Flagstaff, three hours and fifty out, where the mountain air stays comfortable while the desert bakes. Bryce Canyon's high rim stays mild too, and San Diego or Santa Barbara trade the desert for ocean air.

Can you do the Grand Canyon in a weekend from Las Vegas? Yes. Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim is about four and a half hours' drive, so leave Friday and take the full Saturday on the rim. Arizona skips daylight saving, so in winter the park runs an hour ahead of Vegas.

How much does a weekend getaway from Las Vegas cost? Most of these run $630 to $930 all-in for two over two nights, covering lodging, driving, and meals. St. George and Death Valley sit at the lower end; San Diego and Santa Barbara at the higher.

The bottom line

The best weekend getaway from Las Vegas is the one whose drive leaves you time to enjoy it. With a full weekend, the South Rim, Bryce, or the coast runs to San Diego and Santa Barbara reward the haul. Short on time, St. George, Death Valley, and Lake Havasu City keep you inside two and a half hours. Either way, plan your weekend free and it ranks these sixteen for your exact dates, group, and budget.
