This 10-day trip for a couple combines 5 days in Dubai (Burj Khalifa, Desert Safari, Jumeirah Beach) with 5 days on a resort island in the South Ari Atoll, Maldives (snorkeling, marine wildlife encounters). It's a balanced pace, offering urban exploration and luxury desert experiences before...
A beach trip, for a couple, flying from New York, with a focus on beach & wildlife & nature
10-day trip
This itinerary prioritizes the striking contrast between Dubai's futuristic cityscape and desert adventures and the Maldives' serene marine beauty. You'll experience Dubai's iconic architecture and thrilling desert safaris, then unwind amidst the Maldivian coral reefs. This means skipping other cultural facets of the UAE, like Abu Dhabi's majestic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque or the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which offer a different depth of art and history.
You also won't experience the full breadth of Maldivian atolls, limiting your marine encounters to one region, potentially missing the unique whale shark hotspots of specific outer reefs. To deepen your experience of Arabian culture and art, add 2 days to visit Abu Dhabi after Dubai, just a 1.5-hour drive away. You could explore the grandeur of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, marvel at the architectural wonder of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and stroll through the manicured Qasr Al Watan, adding a layer of rich historical and cultural exploration that the modernism of Dubai doesn't fully offer.
This itinerary follows a balanced pace — intense sightseeing days alternate with recovery days for rest and spontaneous exploration. Want a different pace? Create a custom version with your preferences.

4.6(6,672 reviews)"A Moonlight Paradise: Jumeirah Public Beach If you’re looking for the ultimate Dubai beach experience, Jumeirah Public Beach (especially the Night Swimming area) is a total game-changer. I recently visited after sunset, and it’s easily one of the coolest things to do in the city. Why I Love It: 24/7 Night Swimming: It’s rare to find a beach where you can safely swim at night. The Dubai Municipality has installed these massive, futuristic light towers that illuminate the water perfectly. It feels safe, magical, and is the perfect way to beat the heat. Stunning Views: You get a front-row seat to the iconic Dubai skyline. Seeing the Burj Khalifa lit up while you're standing on the sand is a vibe you won't get anywhere else. Top-Notch Facilities: The area is incredibly clean and well-maintained. There are wooden walkways, plenty of sun loungers, and clear signage. Safety First: I was impressed to see dedicated lifeguard stations and clearly marked swimming zones with lit-up buoys. It makes a nighttime dip feel very secure. Pro-Tip: Bring your camera! The reflection of the city lights on the water makes for some of the best photos you’ll take in Dubai. Whether you’re here for a workout, a family hang-out, or just a quiet stroll along the shore, this beach is a 10/10."— Johan Opoka

4.5(78,824 reviews)"Visiting the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo at Dubai Mall was an unforgettable experience for our family. From the moment we entered, we were amazed by the massive aquarium tunnel and the incredible variety of marine life surrounding us. Walking through the tunnel felt like being inside the ocean, with sharks, rays, and colorful fish swimming gracefully all around. The Underwater Zoo is very well organized and educational, offering a close look at different ecosystems and species. My child especially enjoyed seeing the penguins, crocodiles, and playful otters. The exhibits are clean, well maintained, and designed to be engaging for both children and adults. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to answer questions, which added great value to the visit. Safety measures were clearly in place, and everything felt very professional. The interactive experiences and clear information displays made learning fun and exciting. Located inside Dubai Mall, the aquarium is easy to access and perfect to combine with shopping or dining. Overall, the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is a must-visit attraction for families and tourists. It offers a wonderful mix of entertainment, education, and awe-inspiring views of marine life. We didn’t expect the line was that long, so we purchased the VIP which was 2x higher priced. The panoramic views were absolutely stunning without a doubt. We were there in a late afternoon, which turned out to be a good time as one can enjoy the views under the setting sun and evening when the lights were on. A must see in Dubai."— Ih-Chin Chen

4.4(657 reviews)"It’s a tourist trap, Construction going on, clothes are hanged to dry like is middle of Mumbai in so called “Zen Area” None working showers, falsely advertising just a basic hot dry Suna as ( fancy herbal bath), calling a basic plastic plastered dirty shower an experience shower that is not working! Nothing . This place is worthless other than the nice entrance that I give one extra star for.. your normal hotel has a better facility! If that’s excite you read the remaining of my true experience today. Visited today to enjoy the Turkish bath. I thought this would be a 5-star smooth and relaxing experience, giving the price point witch I totally did not mind and thought it would be worth it! But I was disappointed to say the least. I booked and paid online, showed up at the front desk, checked in, signed the disclaimers, and asked the receptionist if they needed my credit card. He mentioned it was already paid online, so there was no need—I was good to go and could use the facility until my time for the Hamam. I showed up 10 minutes early at the spot where they asked me to come, and the therapist showed up too—but said I wasn’t in the system. Then another person came, then another, until four people were surrounding me trying to figure out why I wasn’t in the system. What should have been a relaxing experience turned into an exhausting. I sat there in my bathrobe for about 15 minutes answering questions, feeling uncomfortable while having to explain over and over that I had a reservation and showing my email receipt. Even the receptionist came and said, “Yes, I remember you with your credit card and Signing disc disclosure! On top of that, there were other issues. Super weirdly if you get a massage or bath, they ask you to put a woman style underwear, thin mash for men to wear, which I found unacceptable. Meanwhile, as I was thinking about this, I saw a maintenance guy pushing a big cart with a ladder and paint supplies in the sauna area and started to paint with his equipment where it’s supposed to be quiet and peaceful and no a construction zone with oil base paint smell, that alone may be small but tells you this guys are not premium spa that they like to portend by using fancy name and fancy door! Overall, I think this is at best a less than average place. Don’t come here expecting a five-star experience just because you’re paying five-star prices. See the pictures for yourself. I left."— David

From cinnamon, to star anise, nutmeg, and ofcourse their most popular is saffron. There is also many tea leaves created from the herbs and spices, i managed to try their saffron tea, it had a spicy smell but the taste was not bad, almost like spiced milk tea. There is also alot of small items that u can buy as souvenirs, the teacups and their lamps reminds me of the movie Aladdin, the genie in a bottle. I even rubbed the lamp to see if really got genie come out 😂 Anyways, it was really fun and interesting, almost like a night market but in daytime. They also sell their traditional clothes, and offer photo taking services, something similar to the Thailand traditional costume photo taking, they wil help u to dress up and do your make up, i think u can choose which location to take ur photo, most popular is to take Infront of Burj Khalifa, or take in the middle of their desert, or on a camel? Haha i don't know cus i didn't get the chance to take their traditional costume photo. Would love to come back again to try tho!"— Dione Ding

Their lowest gold caret they sell is 18k, they don't have below that, like 14k they won't sell, only 18k, 22k, and 24k gold. They also have diamonds and silver, their silver is all 925. All very high purity and quality. They really have head to toe gold jewelry, from the head piece, to the earrings, to the necklace, bracelets, full body, almost like clothes! They really sell gold like selling clothes! And the fact is Dubai is so safe and rich that nobody robs them 😂 If u are a tourist/foreigner, u can buy their gold tax free because u can get VAT refund from airport. Which means it's cheaper to buy gold here then in your own country!! And plus, we are allowed to negotiate the gold price, can bargain to lower or discount abit... Sometimes if lucky, can get a huge discount!! Highly recommend if u are tourist looking to invest in gold or just want to buy gold as a safekeeping!!"— Dione Ding

It serves as a national archive and documentation center, preserving the stories and contributions of Emirati women throughout history and in contemporary society. 4.5(70,133 reviews)"My visit to Ibn Battuta Mall was an absolutely awesome experience! It is far more than just a shopping center; it’s a breathtaking tribute to the world’s diverse cultures. The mall is uniquely divided into six courts representing the regions visited by the legendary explorer: Andalusia, Tunisia, Egypt, Persia, India, and China. Walking through these sections feels like a "mini-world tour," with incredible representations of art and architecture from all these different countries under one roof. Seeing the massive Chinese Junk ship and the stunning Persian dome in person really blew my mind! What makes this place even more impressive is how it balances this history with cutting-edge technology. I was fascinated to learn about the integration of robotics within the mall's operations. For instance, the Carrefour here utilizes autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and AI-driven fulfillment systems to handle orders with futuristic precision. I also appreciated the mall’s commitment to being energy-efficient. Despite its massive size, the climate control and lighting felt optimized and sustainable, proving that a space can be both grand and environmentally conscious in 2026. The atmosphere was vibrant, the staff were incredibly welcoming, and the variety of international brands made my shopping trip perfect. With a direct link to the Ibn Battuta Metro Station, it was also incredibly easy to access. If you want a world-class experience that combines global history with the tech of tomorrow, this is the place to be!"— Keep me review

What Travelers Say
“The weekly day off used to be Friday, as it is considered a blessed day in Islam. However, since 2022, the public sector has shifted to a 4.5-day work week. Friday is now a half-day ending at noon, and the weekend consists of Saturday and Sunday.”

“thumb|Emirati men wearing traditional attire while performing the Emirati weapon dance Razfah Emiratis share a common culture with the rest of the Arab world, so what would be good manners in other Arab countries would generally be good manners in the Emirates too. Emiratis are proud but welcoming people and, when not in their cars, are generally extremely civil and friendly. Their culture can be very conservative, but they are quite attuned to the ways, customs, events, media, and manners of the world. Local men usually wear a "Kandoura", a long robe (typically white), and ghutra, a red-checked or white headdress. Local women wear a black robe-like garment (abaya) and a black head scarf (shayla). Travelers should be aware and respect the more traditional outlook in the UAE, but Western travelers will find most of the UAE quite comfortable. Like other Arab countries, Emirati society is very tribal, with a strong emphasis on family honour. Do not speak badly of someone's family member. Although women are not legally required to wear the hijab, revealing fashions such as tank tops and shorts are discouraged. Hijab and modest clothing are necessary to visit mosques or religious sites. Some mosques such as the Sheikh Zayed mosque in Abu Dhabi provide modest clothing for tourists visiting the site. Short skirts and shorts might incur stares. There are quite a few tourist- or expatriate-dominated zones where even "provocative" dress may be seen, although not welcomed, and swimwear such as bikinis can be worn. These include many areas of the Emirate of Dubai and, for example, beach resorts in Ajman or Fujairah. Public nudity anywhere is strictly forbidden. Sharjah is the most conservative of the Emirates with public decency statutes forbidding overly revealing clothing including certain kinds of beach wear, with varying enforcement. Public display of affection towards a spouse is considered impolite or ill-mannered to the Emirati population. On the other hand,...”

“thumb|Dubai Police uses a fleet of super-cars. The super cars police patrols are found in tourist hot spots and allows tourists to take pictures with the officers. The UAE is one of the safest countries in the world with regard to crime. However, there is a very high rate of automobile accidents, so you should take extra care when driving a vehicle or crossing the road. Also, the law enforcement is harsh, with severe punishments for what in most places would pass as just inappropriate behaviour or at most a misdemeanor. Homosexuality is illegal in the UAE, and it may carry the penalty of death or life in prison, so gay and lesbian tourists should be discreet and avoid any public displays of affection. Sex outside marriage is illegal, but the penalty is not enforced unless it results in pregnancy. Public displays of affection are also illegal and punishable by fine or jail regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Caution is definitely advised. Public sex, nudity, and any form of sexual activity conducted in public is illegal. The UAE has extremely strict laws on drug usage; the punishment for possession is typically 4 years in prison, and tourists have been arrested and sentenced under this law for having microscopic specks of drugs or even drug ingredients on their clothing without their knowledge. Another trap for the unwary is that if you are suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, a blood test can be taken, and if it shows evidence of substances that are illegal in the UAE, then you will probably end up in jail even if the substances were ingested abroad. In addition to testing your blood, they will likely check your belongings. Some common painkillers, like codeine, are illegal narcotics in the UAE. Don't bring any with you unless you carry a copy of your prescription or you may join others who have received jail sentences. In contrast, antibiotics are freely available over the counter at pharmacies. If you receive a prescription...”

“The city of Dubai is situated on a coastal strip bordered by desert and gets very hot in the summer. It is dry on the hottest days and humid during the cooler days in the summer. Cooler, more pleasant weather lasts from the end of September to the beginning of May (although pleasant is relative, with daily temperatures from October to January and March to May still being , but be prepared for cold night temperatures. In winter the temperature at night is usually from . From May to September, the sun is intense and in August temperatures can touch in the city and even higher in the desert. The heat, coupled with a humidity of 60%–70% near the coast, effectively precludes most activity outdoors for the daylight hours during summer. Summer and winter are effectively the only two noticeable seasons the city experiences. Wild Wadi Waterpark and Jumeirah Beach Hotel December to April generally produces the highest precipitation, though little of it, at total per year. Some years yield no more than a few minutes of shower. Rain is celebrated in the UAE and most people take days off and some schools give rain days off to enjoy the little amount of precipitation the city experiences.”

“There are three different groups that have influenced the Emirati cultural landscape. The first is the traditional Islamic Bedouin culture including the traditional items of clothing. Men wear white garments called kandora, while women wear black clothing called abaya. Slavery was integral to this society, and its legacy survives in the second group: many poorly-paid immigrants (mostly from South Asia and the Philippines) make up a large underclass, serving their Emirati and Western masters. This third group, the "Westerners," are often used to project an appearance of modernity and progressivism onto the UAE, but it's all for show: the glitzy shopping malls, high degree of English proficiency, and luxury items serve to whitewash the exploitation that this autocratic society is built upon. Naturally, these three groups tend to clash, sometimes glaringly, but for the most part, the native Emiratis are content to participate in the fossil fuel wealth and ignore all but the most blatant "un-Islamic" practices of wealthy foreigners as long as they keep the tourism and shopping going. However, in some off-the-beaten-path places, the locals still live a more traditional lifestyle and expect behaviour in accordance with it. Nightlife is evident in major cities such as Dubai. The nightlife continues into the night in all emirates (except maybe in small villages or towns). Illumination isn't turned off. Most restaurants, retail shops, malls, and other services continue to operate till approximately 10PM during weekdays and sometimes midnight during weekends. Alcohol is widely available at many restaurants and bars in all emirates except for Sharjah, although liquor stores are few. A license to buy alcohol may be needed. The alcohol license is proof that the bearer is a non-Muslim; a passport will not suffice. However, you can purchase alcohol duty-free at the airport to bring into the UAE. Sharjah emirate is almost completely dry. An alcohol license is required in the...”

This itinerary pairs Dubai's futuristic urban landscape and vast desert with the Maldives' serene over-water bungalows and unparalleled marine biodiversity, offering a distinct desert-to-ocean transition that other destinations lack. Choosing this over a solely beach-focused trip to, say, the Seychelles, ensures you experience both ambitious architectural feats and world-class diving. The Maldives provide an exclusive, untouched natural beauty focused on underwater life, a character not matched by more developed island nations.
Our culinary journey begins in the UAE, where Dubai’s older neighborhoods of Deira and Al Karama offer a dynamic blend of traditional Emirati dishes like Harees and Luqaimat alongside Levantine staples such as budget-friendly falafel and shawarma. Moving to the Maldives, the South Ari Atoll’s inhabited islands like Dhangethi promise fresh catch in every meal, from breakfast mas huni to dinner garudhiya, a stark contrast to resort dining.

📅 Best Time to Visit
For Dubai, the best time is October to April, with pleasant temperatures ranging from 19°C-30°C, ideal for outdoor activities. This is peak season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices. The Maldives (South Ari Atoll) has a dry season from December to April, with temperatures around 28°C-30°C, offering calm seas and excellent visibility for diving. However, for whale shark and manta ray sightings in South Ari Atoll, the shoulder seasons (May-November) can also be productive, aligning with the southwest monsoon, which brings occasional short bursts of rain.

Activities
This trip is lopsided: Dubai is expensive for hotels and activities (expect $100+ for basic hotel rooms, $20-40 for a casual lunch), while the Maldives (on local islands) offers moderate guesthouses ($80-150/night) and more affordable meals. Tap water is safe in Dubai, but bottled water is essential on Maldivian local islands.
To manage your food budget in Dubai, prioritize casual eateries in older neighborhoods like Deira or Bur Dubai, where local meals typically cost $8-15 per person, significantly less than the $30-50 per person common in tourist zones.
In the Maldives, book snorkeling and excursion trips (e.g., sandbank visits) directly through your local island guesthouse, as these are often priced at $30-60 per person per trip, offering better value than pricier resort day passes.
For efficient and budget-friendly transit in Dubai, purchase a Nol Silver Card upon arrival (25 AED / ~$7 with 19 AED credit) to access the Metro and buses, with individual journeys costing 3-7.5 AED, much cheaper than taxis.
Allocate a portion of your activities budget for one signature wildlife encounter in South Ari Atoll, such as a guided whale shark or manta ray snorkeling trip, which typically costs $70-100 per person and offers a unique beach-style highlight.

- Book Burj Khalifa 'At The Top' tickets online via the official website (burjkhalifa.ae) several weeks in advance to secure specific time slots and save up to 40% compared to walk-up prices.
- Utilize the NOL card for Dubai's RTA public transport system (Metro, Tram, Bus) — buy a Silver Card at any Metro station for cashless travel and cheaper fares than single-ride tickets.
- Plan desert safari excursions in Dubai for late afternoon (around 3-4 PM) to experience dune bashing, camel rides, and dinner under the stars, booking with reputable operators like Platinum Heritage.
- For accessing specific areas within the Dubai Creek (e.g., Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood or the Gold Souk), use an Abra (traditional wooden boat) for a scenic and affordable ride at just AED 1 per person.
- When hailing taxis in Dubai, ensure the driver activates the meter at the start of your journey; unmetered rides often lead to inflated fares, so insist on the meter.
- Arrange seaplane or speedboat transfers to your South Ari Atoll resort/guesthouse directly with your accommodation at least 72 hours before arrival, as public ferries are infrequent and don't serve all islands.
- On inhabited islands in South Ari Atoll (e.g., Dhigurah, Maamigili), carry small denominations of USD ($1, $5, $10) or Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) for local purchases, as smaller shops may not accept credit cards reliably.
- For optimal snorkeling or diving with whale sharks and manta rays in South Ari Atoll, aim for the period between May and November, particularly for manta rays around Hanifaru Bay, by booking tours with local dive centers.
- If visiting local islands in the Maldives, be sure to eat at local 'Hotels' (small restaurants) for authentic Maldivian curries and 'Hedhikaa' (short eats) for an affordable meal, typically under MVR 100.

In Dubai, the currency is the UAE Dirham (AED). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's useful to carry some cash for smaller purchases or taxis. In the Maldives, the local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). However, US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted at resorts and for many tourist-related services. On inhabited local islands in South Ari Atoll, carrying smaller denominations of USD or MVR cash is recommended for local shops and small guesthouses.
In Dubai, tipping is customary and appreciated: 10-15% is standard at restaurants if a service charge isn't already included. Small tips (AED 5-10) are common for hotel staff, taxi drivers, and delivery services. In the Maldives, resorts typically add a 10% service charge, so additional tipping is at your discretion but always welcomed. On local islands, tipping is less common but still appreciated for good service.
For both destinations, pack lightweight, breathable fabrics. In Dubai, and particularly on local islands in the Maldives, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is advisable for public areas and cultural sites. Women should pack a scarf or pashmina for mosque visits in Dubai. For the Maldives, bring plenty of swimwear, rash guards for sun protection during water activities, and reef-safe sunscreen.
In Dubai, the Metro is efficient for longer distances, complemented by trams, buses, and readily available taxis (use Careem/Uber apps). For Malé to South Ari Atoll, transfers are primarily by seaplane or speedboat, which must be arranged in advance with your resort or guesthouse. Public ferries serve some inhabited islands but are slower and less frequent, not reaching all resorts.
In Dubai, alcohol consumption is permitted only in licensed establishments such as hotels, bars, and restaurants, and never in public spaces. During Ramadan, alcohol availability is often reduced. In the Maldives, alcohol is strictly prohibited on all inhabited local islands. It is only available and consumed within licensed tourist resorts and liveaboard boats. Respect these laws to avoid legal issues.
The Maldives, including South Ari Atoll, is renowned for its marine life, but most species are harmless. When snorkeling or diving, avoid touching coral or marine animals. Keep a safe distance from larger creatures like whale sharks and manta rays. Though rare, watch out for stonefish or lionfish in shallow reef areas; wearing water shoes can offer protection. Always follow guidance from local dive masters and guides.
