With only 3 days on a packed pace, you miss the opportunity for a half-day trip to Sarnath, where Buddha first taught Dhamma, leaving behind the tranquility of its Dhamek Stupa and serene Buddhist temples. You also forgo deeper exploration of specific craft villages like Sarai Mohana for Banarasi silk weaving, or more relaxed cooking classes that would allow for a deeper dive into local culinary traditions beyond street food tours.

Add 1-2 days to include a half-day trip to Sarnath, just outside Varanasi, where the tranquil Dhamek Stupa stands on the very ground where Buddha gave his first sermon. 4.7(116,835 reviews)

"Kashi, say Varanasi, Banaras is the meaning of Lord Shiva. Kashi is also called the city of salvation. Kashi Vishwanath Temple is very beautiful and has a Shivalinga of Swayam Bhu Mahadev in it. Mobiles are not allowed in the temple, so you can keep them there, there is a free locker. When we went for darshan at 5 am, there was not that much crowd, so you can have darshan peacefully. If you go there early in the morning, you can also take advantage of the aarti at the ghat and then you can also have darshan of the temple. From this, I urge everyone to go for darshan early in the morning. Here you can see all the ghats on a boat, for which we paid Rs 200 per person, which takes about 2 hours. We took advantage of the aarti at Namo Ghat there in the evening. Since it was Maha Shivratri, the famous ghat was beautifully decorated. When we went to perform the aarti in the evening, there was also a bhajan before the aarti because it was Maha Shivratri, so there are not so many programs on other normal days. If you want to take advantage of the aarti from close quarters, you have to reach there by 5 PM-5:30 PM. The famous Manikarnika Ghat here is worth seeing, which is near the river gate of the temple. It is open 24 hours and the cremation of the dead is done there. Since there is a curse of Lord Shiva there, the pyre of some dead person keeps burning there. It is said that the person whose pyre is burnt here attains salvation, that is why the death of Kashi is famous. When you go to Kashi, your illusions are removed and you experience detachment."Ravi Kalariya

"Powerful Symbol of History & Spirituality Dhamek Stupa is one of the most significant and awe-inspiring Buddhist monuments in Sarnath. This is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, which gives the site immense historical and spiritual importance. Standing before the massive cylindrical structure instantly creates a feeling of calm and reverence. The stupa is well preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India, and the surrounding lawns and pathways are neatly maintained. Informational boards help visitors understand the history and symbolism associated with the monument. The carvings and stonework, though weathered by time, still reflect the grandeur of ancient Indian architecture. The atmosphere is peaceful, especially during early morning or late afternoon. Monks from different countries can often be seen meditating or chanting, which adds to the spiritual ambiance. Photography is allowed, and the site is suitable for families, students, and history enthusiasts. During peak tourist seasons it can get crowded, but the vast open space allows visitors to move comfortably. Overall, Dhamek Stupa is a must-visit for anyone interested in Buddhism, Indian history, or seeking a moment of quiet reflection."Rabindra Bisoi

"India Trip Reviews 36/many Trip detail- Gate 1 Travels' 12 Day Golden Triangle of India with Varanasi Built in the 1930s by the Mahabodhi Society, this is a wonderful little Buddhist temple with a stunning design inside. There is artwork on the walls depicting Buddha's life, as well as a very large statue in the middle. Right outside, connected to their courtyard, is the Bodhi Tree Complex, depicting Buddha giving his first sermon and, more importantly, containing a bodhi tree that is a direct descendant of the original one in Sri Lanka, where the Buddha gained enlightenment. While a more modern temple, it is both fascinating and well designed. The temple was crowded for a good reason, and I would recommend going there"Glenn C

    4.4(4,287 reviews)

"Chaukhandi Stupa – Sarnath, Varanasi The Chaukhandi Stupa is a significant Buddhist monument located in Sarnath, near Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh, India). It marks an important site in the life of Gautama Buddha and holds deep historical and archaeological importance. --- 🏛️ Historical Background The Chaukhandi Stupa was originally built between the 4th and 6th centuries CE during the Gupta period. It is believed to mark the place where Lord Buddha met his first five disciples (the Panchavargiya monks) on his way to Sarnath after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. The stupa was later enhanced during the Mughal period when Govardhan, the son of Raja Todar Mal, built an octagonal tower atop the mound to commemorate the visit of Emperor Humayun. --- 🧱 Architecture The stupa is built as a massive terraced mound made of bricks, giving it a grand appearance. The octagonal tower at the top — a later Mughal addition — adds a unique architectural blend of Buddhist and Mughal styles. The structure has undergone restoration by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and is a protected monument today. --- 🕊️ Religious Significance The site symbolizes Buddha’s journey of spreading Dharma (teachings) after enlightenment. It is part of the Sarnath Buddhist Circuit, which includes the Dhamek Stupa, Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, and Ashokan Pillar. --- 📍 Location Sarnath, about 8 km northeast of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Easily accessible by road, rail, and air from Varanasi. --- 🕰️ Visiting Information Timings: 6:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Open all days) Entry Fee: Free (for Indians and foreigners) Best Time to Visit: October to March (pleasant weather)"Vasco da Gama

"Temple of education,Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is often described as a Temple of Education because it represents a sacred space where knowledge, values, and national service come together. Founded in 1916 by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in the holy city of Varanasi, BHU was envisioned as a center of learning that blends India’s ancient wisdom with modern education. Its guiding philosophy, reflected in the motto “Vidyaaya Amritam Ashnute” (Through knowledge, one attains immortality), emphasizes the transformative power of education in shaping individuals and society. BHU is one of the largest residential universities in Asia and offers education across diverse disciplines including arts, sciences, engineering, medicine, management, agriculture, and Indian knowledge systems such as Sanskrit, philosophy, and Ayurveda. Institutions like IIT-BHU and IMS-BHU have earned national and international recognition, producing scholars, scientists, doctors, administrators, and leaders who contribute significantly to nation-building. The university follows the guru–shishya tradition in spirit, where teachers are respected as guides and students are encouraged to pursue learning with discipline, ethics, and a sense of purpose. Situated in Kashi, the spiritual heart of India, BHU naturally integrates cultural and moral values into academic life. Education here is not limited to career development but is seen as a means of character building, social responsibility, and service to the nation. By nurturing intellectual excellence along with cultural consciousness, BHU truly stands as a Temple of Education, dedicated to creating enlightened citizens committed to the progress of society and the country."Manoj Chauhan

"l Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) in Varanasi is generally described as a functional, mid-sized airport that is currently undergoing significant modernization to handle its booming tourism traffic. While it has been recognized for its performance, recent traveler reviews highlight both its charm and its growing pains. Key Highlights & Pros Cleanliness & Ambience: Many recent reviews (2024–2025) praise the airport for being clean and well-maintained. Travelers often note the "character" of the airport, specifically mentioning the Sanskrit announcements (the first in India) and cultural murals. Efficiency: The airport is often cited for quick check-in and security processes compared to larger metros. Award-Winning: It was previously awarded Best Airport in Asia-Pacific (2–5 million passenger category) by Airports Council International (ACI). Common Criticisms & Cons Limited Dining & Lounge Facilities: The "Take Off Bar and Lounge" is the primary option but receives mixed-to-poor reviews for its small size, limited food menu, and restrictive credit card acceptance. There are few substantial restaurant options outside of small cafes. Transportation Hassles: Located about 19–26 km from the city center, taxi services are a major pain point. Reviewers frequently complain about overcharging by local cab drivers and unreliability of app-based services like Ola/Uber for late-night pickups. Nighttime Operations: The airport has historically closed at night, meaning there are no sleeping facilities for those with early morning flights or long layovers. Practical Tips for Travelers Transportation: For a hassle-free experience, consider booking a Private Airport Transfer in advance, which many travelers find more reliable than negotiating at the counter. Budget Hack: If traveling with light luggage, you can take a bus toward the city from the highway (a short walk from the terminal) for a fraction of the taxi cost. Lounge Access: Check your card compatibility beforehand; users report that Dreamfolks and certain premium HDFC cards are most likely to work."Animesh Kumar Mandal

What Travelers Say

Delhi and Varanasi were the most stressful and chaotic places I visited in India - leave and head somewhere like Pushkar, McLeod Ganj, or Rishikesh. They’re like a different world, beautiful and very relaxed. If you need to escape the chaos in Varanasi I’d recommend going to the roof terrace of Mona Lisa cafe, nice relaxing spot.

Varanasi stands apart from a broader North Indian cultural circuit (like Delhi + Agra + Jaipur) by offering an unparalleled deep dive into ancient Hindu spiritual life, not merely historical monuments. While other cities may offer grand Mughal architecture or Rajput palaces, Varanasi presents a living, breathing spiritual tradition centered on the Ganges River, with sacred rituals and unique cultural practices that other destinations lack. Its ancient ghats and labyrinthine Old City lanes reveal an India steeped in millennia of devotion and a distinctive local cuisine that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

Varanasi thrives on spiritual street food — the ancient lanes around Dashashwamedh and Godowlia are where you'll find generations-old chaat vendors and sweet shops. Morning kachori-sabzi breakfasts fuel pilgrims, while evening paan stands offer a digestive ritual after dinner.

Varanasi generally has low violent crime. However, petty crime like pickpocketing is common in crowded areas and narrow lanes, especially after dark. Secure your valuables in a money belt and only carry minimal cash. The city can be chaotic and intense, which some travelers find stressful, so maintain vigilance and be aware of your surroundings.

Cycle-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are the primary modes of transport. Always negotiate the fare before starting your ride; a short cycle-rickshaw trip should be around ₹50. Walking is common, especially around the ghats and in the older lanes. Rideshare apps like Ola or Uber are available in some parts but less reliable in the oldest areas.

The best time to visit Varanasi is from October to March, when the weather is cooler and more pleasant, typically between 10°C and 25°C. Summers (April-June) are extremely hot, often exceeding 40°C, making daytime activities challenging. The cooler months also coincide with many important Hindu festivals.

The local currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). While larger hotels and some shops accept credit cards, cash is essential for most transactions, particularly with street vendors, rickshaw drivers, and smaller eateries. ATMs are available, but it's wise to carry sufficient cash for daily expenses.

You can purchase a local SIM card from providers like Airtel, Jio, Vi, or BSNL. You'll need your passport and a passport-sized photo for activation. WiFi is generally available in hotels, but confirm its reliability in budget accommodations. Internet cafes are also widely available at reasonable hourly rates.

Pack lightweight long pants and shoulder-covering shirts for modesty at religious sites and sun protection. A scarf or shawl is useful for women for head/shoulder covering. Slip-on shoes are practical for frequent removal at temples and ghats. Warm layers are necessary if visiting between October and March for cool evenings.

Always remove your shoes before entering temples, homes, or sacred areas along the ghats. Maintain a respectful distance from holy animals like cows and monkeys. When observing religious ceremonies along the Ganges, do so quietly and avoid intrusive photography. Tipping is not mandatory but small gratuities for good service are appreciated.
