4 Days in Mumbai: Gateway of India, Dhobi Ghat & More

This packed 4-day trip for two dives deep into Mumbai's vibrant energy, centered in South Mumbai. Explore iconic landmarks like the Gateway of India and immerse in local life at Dhobi Ghat, alongside a street food crawl along Colaba Causeway. Evenings will be filled with diverse live...

A packed cultural trip, for a couple, flying from New York, with a focus on cultural & food & live entertainment

This packed 4-day trip to Mumbai prioritizes its unique blend of colonial grandeur, Bollywood glamour, and dynamic urban experiences for a couple. It entirely skips the serene beaches and Portuguese colonial architecture of Goa, where you could unwind with a completely different pace. You also miss the opportunity to explore Northern India's iconic Golden Triangle, with the Taj Mahal's exquisite marble symmetry in Agra or the ancient forts of Jaipur, which this itinerary cannot accommodate.

Add 2-3 days to take a short domestic flight south to Goa, where you could trade Mumbai's urban intensity for a laid-back beach culture and distinctive Portuguese charm. Explore old churches, relax on sandy shores, and enjoy fresh seafood shacks, offering a refreshing contrast in pace and atmosphere.

"Visited Haji Ali Dargah for the first time, and it was a place I had a strong desire to visit for a long time. It truly gives a peaceful feeling when you reach there. Luckily, there was not much crowd during my visit, which made the experience even more calm and enjoyable. The dargah area seems to be under some construction for a new structure, but it did not affect the visit much. Walking on the path surrounded by the Arabian Sea and feeling the evening breeze was a really wonderful moment. The view and atmosphere make it a very special place to visit, especially during evening time. One thing to be aware of is some flower and chaddar vendors outside and along the path may try to force or manipulate visitors into buying things. One person at the entrance tried to tell us to tie a handkerchief on the head saying it was free, but then insisted on buying a chaddar. We did not fall for it, so just be careful and aware. There are also many small shops along the walkway. Overall, it was a memorable and peaceful visit, and definitely a must-visit place in Mumbai."Sinan Shaan

What Travelers Say

Unlike other parts of the country, especially Delhi where rape is prevalent, crime is rare, except for possibly common crime like pickpocketing. Violent crime in Mumbai is more or less like any other large Indian city. It is best to err on the side of safety and act according to your local environment. Here are a few basic safety tips: * Keep your money and credit cards safe at all times. Always carry some cash as many places won't take cards. * Do not openly display ₹500 and ₹2,000 notes in public. The available currency notes are ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹500 and ₹2,000 and the available coins for tender are ₹1, ₹2, ₹5 and ₹10. Beware of someone giving you currency notes of any other denomination (though it is very unlikely; as they would have to be exchanged with the Reserve Bank of India; the central bank of India). The Indian government demonetised the old ₹500 and ₹1,000 currency notes in November 2016. *Travelling in Mumbai is generally safe at any time of the day or night. The risks primarily run if you are not aware of the fares and fare calculations (only applicable to non-electronic and non-prepaid meters). If you travel alone, especially in night, then always see the meter by yourself and then pay the fare. If you are alone, sit in front so that you can see the meter. * There have been cases where taxi drivers con people, mostly tourists, by taking longer routes, charging extra for luggage, tampering with the meter and fooling the passenger by exchanging ₹500 with a ₹100 note within fraction of seconds and making the passenger believe that he/she has handed over a ₹100 note. Thus, in order to avoid getting fooled, prefer app based taxi services like Ola and Uber for commuting. * Beware of pickpockets on buses and trains. Do not put your wallet or other valuables in outside pockets of your bag, such that someone may be able to slip it out without your noticing. * Also beware of mobile, chain, or bag snatchers who operate in densely populated places, such...

I’m from India and have lived in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Uttarakhand. Honestly, Delhi and Mumbai can be quite nasty, unclean, smoggy, dirty, unpleasant. You should try visiting Kerala or Tamil Nadu instead — or if you do visit Delhi and Mumbai, don’t spend too much time there.

Hi, fellow local here. I think the general point you were trying to get across definitely resonates with me and makes absolute sense. You should not skimp out on cheap travel in India and don't go about romanticizing the lifestyle and compulsions of the poor to seek a taste of India. However, don't entirely agree on the places you advised visiting against like mumbai or new delhi or even uttar pradesh for that matter. (Personally, think MP is a great underrated shout too with some of its...

Pickpocketing: Pickpocketing can occur in busy spaces, so keeping valuables secure, using anti‑theft bags, and avoiding displaying expensive items openly can go a long way in preventing trouble. It’s also wise to carry only what you need for the day and leave important documents, like passports, safely stored at your accommodation. Food and drink safety: Food and water safety is another important consideration. While street food can be delicious, choosing vendors with good hygiene practices is essential. Drinking bottled or filtered water is generally safer than tap water in many destinations. Tourists should also be cautious about trying unfamiliar foods too quickly, especially if they have sensitive stomachs. Weather and the monsoon rains: Staying aware of local weather conditions and seasonal changes can prevent unexpected issues. Some regions may experience extreme heat, heavy monsoon rains, or sudden storms, so packing appropriate clothing and checking forecasts regularly is important. Keeping emergency contacts handy, including local authorities and your country’s embassy or consulate, adds an extra layer of preparedness.

If you are flying from Europe it is generally cheaper to fly from London, and there are many frequent flights available. All domestic sectors are linked to Mumbai, making it the second busiest hub in the country next to Delhi. Formed in the 1930s as an air force base, Mumbai Airport used to have only one terminal at Santacruz till 1981 and was the most crowded airport in India. A new terminal was formed in 1981 to alleviate the situation.

Mumbai, India, is chosen over a focus on cities like Varanasi or Delhi for its distinct entrepreneurial spirit, colonial architecture alongside soaring modernity, and a thriving contemporary arts scene, which Varanasi's ancient ghats and Delhi's Mughal history cannot match. While other Indian cities immerse you in spiritual traditions or royal heritage, Mumbai uniquely delivers a liberal cultural hub with a dynamic food scene and diverse nightlife often absent from more traditional routes.

Mumbai thrives on street food and immigrant flavors — vada pav and pav bhaji stalls are everywhere, from Colaba to Bandra. Parsi cafes offer unique breakfast and lunch; the old Irani establishments like Kyani & Co. are living history. Early morning chai and bun maska is the local fuel before the rush.

Good to Know

Meal timesBreakfast is typically from 8 AM to 10 AM, lunch from 1 PM to 3 PM, and dinner from 8 PM to 10 PM. Street food and snack vendors are active throughout the day and late into the evening.
TippingAt street stalls and small eateries, tipping is not expected, but rounding up the bill is common. In mid-range to fine dining, a 5-10% tip is appropriate if a service charge is not already included in the bill.
WaterTap water is generally not safe for consumption by foreigners. Always stick to bottled water for drinking and avoid ice unless you are certain it is made from purified water, especially at roadside stalls.
VegetarianMumbai is very vegetarian-friendly; many local dishes are inherently meat-free. For vegans, specify 'no dairy' (no milk, yogurt, paneer, or ghee). Halal meat is widely available, but always confirm. For severe allergies, exercise caution as cross-contamination can occur in smaller kitchens and street stalls.
PaymentCash is king for street food vendors, small local eateries, and markets. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted at larger restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets. Digital payment apps (UPI) are very common among locals but may require a local bank account.
EtiquetteMany dishes are eaten with the right hand; it's considered impolite to use your left. Tipping is not mandatory at small establishments but appreciated at sit-down restaurants. Don't waste food, especially on a thali, and be prepared for bustling, often noisy environments.

Mumbai's shopping scene is a vibrant mix, from bustling street markets to high-end boutiques, reflecting its status as India's financial and fashion capital. The best finds are often hidden in specialized local shops or particular market sections rather than generic tourist traps.

💸
Saving

  • Hydrate frequently with bottled water or water from reputable filtered sources, avoiding tap water to prevent stomach issues.
  • If taking Mumbai's local trains, avoid peak rush hours (7:30 AM-10:30 AM and 5:00 PM-8:00 PM) as they are extremely crowded; women can opt for designated 'Ladies Only' compartments.
  • Book tickets for popular attractions like Elephanta Caves or Bollywood tours in advance, especially during peak season, to save time and ensure availability.

Note: Travel conditions, regulations, and local customs may change. We recommend verifying essential details — such as visa requirements, emergency contacts, and payment options — closer to your travel date.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Most foreign nationals, including those from the US, UK, EU, and Australia, require an e-Visa for India, which must be applied for online (indianvisaonline.gov.in) prior to arrival. The e-Visa typically permits a stay of 60 to 90 days, depending on nationality, and usually processes within 72 hours. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of departure. Indian citizens do not need a visa for domestic travel. Other nationalities should check the official Indian government visa website for specific requirements.

Local Customs & Etiquette

At religious sites like Siddhivinayak Temple or Haji Ali Dargah, and when entering someone's home, remove your shoes before entering; look for shoe racks or designated areas. In markets like Crawford Market or Linking Road, bargaining is expected for clothes, souvenirs, and non-fixed-price items — start at 50-60% of the initial asking price. Always use your right hand for eating, exchanging money, or giving/receiving items, as the left hand is traditionally considered impure. While Mumbai is cosmopolitan, respectful dress (shoulders and knees covered) is appreciated when visiting temples or mosques, especially for women.

Safety Overview

Mumbai has a lower violent crime rate compared to some other major Indian cities, but pickpocketing is common in densely crowded areas such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Colaba Causeway markets, and during peak hours on local trains. Be firm but polite with street touts who might try to guide you to specific shops or services, especially around Gateway of India. For any emergency, the National Toll-free Police Helpline is 100.

Yes, most foreign nationals, including those from the US, UK, EU, and Australia, require an e-Visa for India. You must apply for it online at indianvisaonline.gov.in before your trip. The e-Visa typically permits a stay of 60 to 90 days. Always check your specific nationality's requirements.

Mumbai is generally considered safer than many other large Indian cities, and violent crime is relatively low. However, solo female travelers should still exercise caution, particularly in crowded areas where pickpocketing is common. Avoid walking alone in dimly lit areas at night and use app-based taxis (Ola/Uber) for transport.

From BOM, the most convenient options are app-based taxis (Ola/Uber) or pre-paid airport taxis, which offer fixed fares. Journey time to South Mumbai typically ranges from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. The Mumbai Metro also connects Terminal 2 to various parts of the city, offering a faster alternative during peak traffic.

The currency used in Mumbai is the Indian Rupee (INR). While credit cards are accepted at larger establishments, carrying cash is highly recommended for street food, local markets, auto-rickshaws, and smaller shops that may not accept cards or digital payments like UPI.

Tipping is not strictly mandatory but is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, a tip of 5-10% is customary if a service charge isn't already included. For taxis and auto-rickshaws, simply rounding up the fare is common. Small tips (20-50 INR) can be given to hotel porters or service staff.

Pack light, breathable cotton or linen clothing due to Mumbai's hot and humid climate. Include a scarf or shawl for women to cover shoulders when visiting religious sites. Modest attire (shoulders and knees covered) is advisable for both men and women when exploring temples, mosques, or traditional neighborhoods out of respect.

The period from October to February offers the most pleasant weather (18-30°C) with lower humidity, making it ideal for sightseeing. While this is also peak tourist season, crowds are generally manageable. Avoid the monsoon months (June-September) due to heavy rainfall and the hot, humid pre-monsoon period (March-May).

Mumbai's street food is delicious, but choose vendors with high turnover, visible hygiene practices, and who cook food fresh in front of you. Opt for hot, freshly prepared items over cold dishes. Stick to bottled water to stay hydrated and carry hand sanitizer for pre-meal cleaning. Avoid uncooked vegetables or unpeeled fruits from street stalls.
