Thrissur Pooram is Kerala's grandest temple festival and arguably India's most spectacular elephant pageant, held at Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur. Fifteen caparisoned elephants from each of two rival temples face off in a display of decorated parasols, peacock-feather fans, and golden fly whisks, accompanied by the thundering Ilanjithara Melam percussion orchestra and culminating in a fireworks competition that lights the Kerala sky.
